  1. Well, I stand corrected about the no mention of music.  That's what I get for trying to do that post while my wife was complaining about the pictures we just got back...very distracting.  So, you are correct that there is mention of music in the definitions of band.

The word corps (or corp) still does mean "A body of persons acting together or associated under common direction," and "A group of people combined into or acting as one body."  I do think those terms fit as well.

The definition as it applies to corp is irrelevant considering corp is an abbreviation for corporation and corps is not. That's like giving the definition of their for there

  2. The members of the Santa Clara Vanguard worked their tails off this year. All their effort paid off at finals when from all accounts they performed one of the best shows of the evening. For all their efforts they were awarded 8th place by the judges, two spots above their seeding. How does DCI award them? In the promotion for the television broadcast of the nights competition DCI provides 8 posters. These posters represent the corps that placed 1st through 7th and the 9th place corps. OK they want to broadcast the event as it happened. I’ll live with it, but I think they should change that part of the format. Who can explain why the posters were based on the semi-final results? Who in DCI made this decision? I think the decision shows no respect for the accomplishments of the 2005 Santa Clara Vanguard. I would feel this strongly if they treated any corps in this manner.

it makes sense for the posters to be of the corps that will be shown in the broadcast.

  3. Sorry...I wasn't pointing out what I considered a flaw, but rather an unintended offensive remark by calling those corps "lower".  I certainly don't think that any member of Crown, Bluecoats, Boston, etc, would consider themselves a member of a "lower" placed corps.

I AM praising the activity...by claiming that those corps are not "LOWER" by ANY standard!  Lower placing corps in Div 1 would be those in the last few places, like 18th, 19th, 20th...I think most would agree with that assessment.  5th - 9th is quite successful!

They ARE lower by one standard. They are lower than 1-4. The title of the thread was a bit deceiving, but I don't think the original poster meant anything by the term lower, although midlevel might have been a better term. "Successful" placements are all relative to the corps. Ask the Blue Devils or SCV if they had a competitively successful year. Then ask Bluecoats. That isn't to take anything away from any of the corps that performed this year, especially since I haven't seen any except my own. I hope that everyone in every corps realizes that it's not about placements or scores or trophies. This summer was about a lot more than one night in August.

  4. The recent “extreme marching band” promo is a perfect example. Ask the average person what first comes to mind when they hear the word marching band and you’ll get, “parades, football halftime, geeks and wierdos”. DC needs to separate itself from the marching band stereotype if it wants any chance to build a fan base within the general population. Let’s try a few different ideas for ESPN’s promo...

My thought is that you didn't research what you're talking about very well. The "recent extreme marching band promo" wasn't a commercial, it was a google ad. There is no audio, there is barely visual. DCI did what it needed to do with it's limited amount of space, because there is no way you are going to explain the difference between marching band and drum corps in a google ad.

Honestly, I don't think that DCI is really that concerned with building a fan base within the general population, because IT'S NOT GOING TO HAPPEN. Drum corps is NEVER going to be mainstream. You know what fan base they WOULD like to expand? The millions of band kids around the country. They are the future of this activity, not the general population. Now is a marching band kid going to be more likely to turn to ESPN to watch marching band, something they identify with and actually participate in, or to watch "drum corps", something that a LOT of them have never heard of.

  5. Given all the myriad of factors you have to take into account, comparing attendance in '05 with attendance in 1980 or '81 is hardly fair.  And anyway, it might not be better than 1981, but it is getting better than it was in the late 90s and early 00s.  That's a good thing right?  You can't just point at the best year ever and expect DCI to live up to that every season.  The "DCI can do no right" people just paint everything in colors of doom and gloom.

Look at it this way, though -- nowadays you can see all of last season's quarterfinalists together at one site three other times besides Finals.  If I live nearer Indy or San Antonio, I'm probably going to that show rather than flying all the way to New England.  Also, with so many fewer corps today, there's a lot fewer immediate friends and family buying tickets.  Back in 1981, just think how many corps there were in Quebec back then.  Considering factors like that, we're not doing too badly.

So ... any solid numbers (or educated estimates) on 2005?  That's why I clicked on this thread to begin with ...

Well stated, exactly what I was planning on saying.

  6. OK, I love the Blue Devils and have for over twenty three years.  They are the best that drum corps has to offer year in, year out, win or lose.  They smoke at brass, perrcussion, guard work, drill, everything but oration.  99.8% of the world can't match what they do on the field until they introduce narration.  Over half the population could rehearse the narration and provide the level of performance that they had this year.  Not to knock the guy, but the idea in and of itself is not special or unique.  Until they audition for this position, they will be mediocre at best with oration.  I would love to see this show and the creativity that would blossom out of the lack of a narrator (even if he was embedded in the scene you were creating).  How would BD show/tell me that they are starting their show at the end of the dance competetion without narration?  How would BD show/tell me the stories of the dancers competing without narration?  That was the beauty and challenge of drum corps.  Let's see BD do that!  The entire narration seemed like it never evolved from the first idea on table.  Narration for this show was a cop out and the easy way out.

Now if they insist on continuing this medocrity, then please address the second issue of the poor sound quality (BD is not the only one with this problem, anyone with singing or spoken parts have this problem).  Get a real sound system that really projects and doesn't overmodulate or distort and no more sharing the keyboard speaker amp with the narrator.  I presume they are not using sub par instruments so as long as they insist on using amps, make it sound great or shut it off.  It's absolutely embarrassing to hear this great sound from the corps and then this disembodied sound from the pit that makes the whole thing sound like amateur hour.

I will credit BD with at least providing a speaker amp for each keyboard as it helps maintain the directionality of the pit.  Of all the set ups, this one seems to be working the best, but there is still a long way to go.

I hope their trip to Europe was awesome, but they finished fourth because the show design was half baked and that begins and ends with the narration and amplification.

    Nightfly3000

Actually, they did not really smoke at brass, guard, percussion OR visual this year. The highest they got in any caption was 3rd, and 5th in percussion and visual. In fact, the caption that hurt them the worst was visual GE. None of those captions have anything to do with narration. BDs problem this year was a poorly designed show that was executed at an extremely average level. I agree that the way they used narration was one of the design flaws, but that's only the tip of the iceburg.

  7. uncle z

If DCI wants to have a show in Canada they can go right ahead.

Unfortunately, they don't see the ramifications of them not having a show up here.

If they don't think that we, the Canadian people, aren't worth having a show up here after we put 40,000 people in that Olympic stadium in '81........ It's their loss. Besides we want DRUM CORPS NOT MARCHING BANDS!!!!!

Maybe DCM or DCA will want to come up here instead!!!!!!!!

Must you always be condecending to DCI corps? Another example of you just being flat out disrespectful of what the members today do. But that's not the main reason I posted :P

I would imagine that getting that many kids across the border on buses would not be the most fun hassle that corps have had to deal with. I don't know the details of it, but I would imagine that with national security being as big of a deal as it is now that it wouldn't be simple matter to get 5 or 6 corps in and out of the country. Granted I'm sure it's not impossible, and it may be easier than I think, but that could have something to do with DCI's motives for not having Canadian shows.

  8. In many cases top twelve corps don't often get to see 13th place corps and those farther out, so it would be hard for those members to have opinions of the lower echelon corps.

I still say that '82 Suncoast Sound deserved a place in the top twelve that year.  I guess I'll just have to settle for being one of the best 13th place corps to ever compete.

So Russell, are you saying that these corps. don't even listen to 13 and down on the albums? It seems to me given the touring situation in todays drum & bugle corps. schedules, that the upper corps. would get plenty of oppurtunity to view the "Lower echelon" at one point or another.

The top twelve are either rehearsing, on their way to the show, or warming up while the "lower echelon" corps are performing.
