Yea, no kidding. The things that we were allowed to do in the Scouts, well, other drum corps were jealous of us. I remember touring with the Crossmen in 1981 and after the show near our buses, I fired up a cig and cracked open a bear, and this guy from Crossmen said to me "holy sh1t, you can do that? Is it allowed?" YUP! Scott Stewart always said that we will be treated like adults, just dont be stupid. We always had coolers full of cold one's in the bus luggage storage area. I will leave it there...

That is true! We prepared cocktails on the horn bus in 83 & 84 and they were sold for $1 a drink!

The answer to the question as to why the hell the corps in in hotels and who is responisble is....... DCI. DCI is reponsible for arranging DCI Championships housing.  And the same is true for all the regionals as well.  Whenever DCI fails to secure housing DCI puts the corps up in hotels.  Therefore there will be no impact tp the Sccouts 2019 bottom line.   As far as renting a food truck.  The old was a wreck and had to go.  The cost of food trucks has really escalated.  A minimum of 100K to replace.  DOT regulations regarding mobile kitchens are pretty stiff.  Madison does not have that kind of cash laying around.  Leasing one makes sense from budgeting too as you pay the lease fee and you are off the hook for any repairs to the trailer for the summer.  It's a firm, predictable expense with no surprises.  So they send the trailer back on Wednesday and "cater" thursday through Saturday.   As for "Feed the Corps" promotion.  This is a fund raiser that several DCI corps use.  Some like Boston and the Academy have it runnng all tour long.  While I do not recall seeing Madison use it in the past, like a lot of good ideas the corps communicate at the DCI Boards Consortium various ideas that work.  If it is a first year endeavor there are likely a few wrinkles yet to work out.

I understand that many corps stay in hotels during finals week. I know that BD has done this for years now. I don’t see anything wrong with this at all.

staff needs to be allowed to do so. however there may be a lot of rebuild next year with the inclusion of females.

My hope is with the inclusion of females next year that they raise the average age of the potential incoming members to at least 19 or 19.5 as much as possible.

I don’t have a dog in this fight but I’ve been following along on this thread. Sorry if I missed it, but I don’t think that the podcast Dan Potter did regarding the new inclusion policy has been mentioned? Some of the topics covered are things I’ve seen people ask about, such as why the announcement was made at this odd time, issues regarding being competitive now, and benefits of this change.

I went in very skeptical based on what I’ve read here about thoughts on the current admin and BOD but I came out of it with the sense that they are very self aware of where they are currently as an organization while trying to move forward.

I agree. And, the most important issue to resolving the fact of not being able to put a top designed show or to hire top staff is the fact of needing to generate more income based on my understanding of the interview. For any corps to compete as a finalist now takes an enormous amount of money as compared to even a few years ago. Honestly, I really am concerned about the sustainability of the activity at this rate something has to change.

  5. I marched in a coed corps in the 80s before marching with the Scouts. I can honestly say that many of the girls that I marched with went on to be fantastic bugle players in other corps such as SCV, Phantom Regiment, Suncoast Sound, Garfield Cadets, etc. So, although I will miss the all male mystique, I will continue to support The Scouts and I think it was a smart move to go coed. And, I honestly believe that it should have been done a lot sooner. Their potential talent base just got a lot larger to draw from by this move. Kudos! MYNWA!

  6.  Garfield Cadets never changed their name after allowing girls in the corps. So I don’t think there’s any reason to change the name. Before I marched in Madison in the 80s I came from a coed corps and many of those girls that I marched with went on to be top quality players in other horn lines such as Santa Clara, Phantom regiment, Suncoast Sound, Garfield Cadets, etc.

  7. When I marched Scouts in the 80s there were corps that were only an after thought in our rear view mirror such as The Cavaliers. When that happened I said then that if Madison didn’t change their philosophy of just wanting to be a crowd favorite and more of the activity innovators they would be in trouble. And, the rest has been history.

And honestly....being a crowd favorite, scores aside, will do a lot to help boost interest

The only thing in my opinion that I would attempt to do is going forward I would attempt to raise the average age of the corps that is on the field. That is hard to do when you are not a top echelon corps on the field especially when it costs so much too march. But that needs to be a priority. I’d like to see an average age of 19 to 20 on the field like we had in the 80s.

I do understand the donor thing, but as someone who barely makes it paycheck to paycheck, I can’t do it, so it pushes alums like me and others away from that option. When I’ve got to choose between keeping the house and feeding the kids, obviously that’s the choice. Not that I’m looking for pity, but that sort of model being the only way to get early info pushes a large number of people into the “have nots” category, as to the “haves.” Just doesn’t seem like the best way to go about things when our alumni base is already so fractured.

I definitely understand how you feel on that Tesmusic.
