  1. Never had a chance to meet Ryan, but he was definitely a fantastic player. His solos were always incredible to listen to!

Chris is doing a great job with the high note role! Enjoying this year's show!!!!

To the kids reading this - Chuck isn't lying....close DCP and get in a practice room!

  2. I struggled with this myself - took it in the fall of 98 through the spring of 99. That summer I managed to burn the you-know-what out of my skin on more than one occasion, WITH sunscreen.

It was totally worth it in the long run, but if he just started taking accutane it might be wise to give it a rest until the fall. Just my two cents. I'd ask the doctor.

  3. LOL! Had me goin' there for a minute. Thought I was going to get some real insight on your take on DCI.

If you're not happy with the shirt we gave you, I'll take it back.

Haha - I was waiting for your response

Actually that particular shirt fits me nicely, thank you very much.

  4. Before I go forward, please understand that I am really upset right now and am not thinking clearly, but I need to get this off of my chest.

DCI is a great activity - I spent six summers performing with two groups and had an amazing experience.

BUT NOW, in 2010 I am FED UP. I have real a problem with the way this activity is going and gosh darn it, someone owes me an answer or at least a more than half-hearted explaination...

I am upset that the souvenir t-shirts don't come in tall sizes. I'm nearly 6'5'' and can't fit in the t-shirts because I am too tall for the XXL and too small for the XXXL, but the XXXL is long enough with the exception of the sleeves which go down past my elbows. This is a real problem folks. I can't buy t-shirts that don't fit anymore.

  5. I give him about one month of tour before he's standing in the locker room stark naked and doing the helicopter.

Just like all the rest of us.

As soon as I saw this thread I knew Taylor would chime in.

Dude, there's nothing to worry about...you'll feel awkward at first, but soon enough you'll be clearing out the other corps sharing your housing site with your antics in there.

  6. I can't speak for '98, '99, and '00; but the '97 corps was far from pleasant. I was on staff with a corps that was competing against Tarheel Sun in '97 and what I observed was a corps that was arrogant, obnoxious, rude, and beaten down. I not only observed this amongst the membership; but the staff as well. There weren't too many throughout the Div II and III corps and the II and III hierarchy that were fond of Tarheel Sund that year. The last memory I have of that '97 corps was a member talking to a friend of her's from another organization, after retreat on finals night, and telling her that "she had to go now because they were all going to get yelled at for losing DCI." Pretty sad, isn't it.

I've also heard quite a bit about Ira. The comments weren't positive.

It was so awful that I decided to do a second season.

Then again I just thought that's how drum corps was supposed to be - so it made the remainder of my seasons a breeze.

  7. More than likely, Tarheel Sun as we knew it will never exist again. That is not necessarily a bad thing because there were many, many, MANY layers of bad things that happened during those five seasons on the road. I don't want to go into that here, but I think we all know some of the bad deals that went on.

That being said, we have two facebook groups dedicated to the drum corps - one is an alumni group and the other is for a reunion we are planning. If you were a member or instructor of the corps at some point, please join!

Tarheel Sun Alumni Group on Facebook

    Tarheel Sun Reunion Page

I think there is also a fan page out there somewhere...I'm sure a simple "tarheel sun" search on FB would work.

  8. I think someone else wrote about it already, but I vividly remember playing "Cup of Life" at all of the winter camps for the 2000 Crossmen season. I actually did not want to move in because I was feeling so terrible about playing Ricky Martin all summer, but I did anyway. At the first corps meeting at Teterboro, Hop told us we weren't playing it and we all went nuts (well, drum corps nuts, so like 3 seconds of hollering followed by silence). :)

    Good move in my book!

  9. In all seriousness, I think screaming went to the wayside when BD stopped playing straight up jazz. I honestly can't remember the last time they had some great screaming solo...I'm sure they've had them since '93 but I guess they weren't noteworthy enough to stick to my ADD memory.

If you get some time, check out Scouts 95, 96, 01, Devils 94, 97, 04, 05...I'm sure there are a few more in there I neglected, but those can be decent additions to your memory :)

  10. What? No Chesapeake?

I went to this show a couple in Chesapeake - why the Crossmen love on the Virginia coast?

Many people from the Hampton Roads area have been involved with the Crossmen...used to be a short drive to Newark/Wilmington from town. I know there are still a few from the area that are marching with the Crossmen. Not sure if that will continue with the move, considering Cadets, Crown and a few others are within driving distance from the 757.

During my time, there were people from there marching Cadets, Crown, Crossmen, Boston, Spirit, BD, SCV, and of course Tarheel Sun. Hampton Roads is a friendly place for Drum Corps fans and members should expect a lot of applause and hype from the crowd. I wouldn't expect anything less from the community!

Best of luck to all of the corps performing tonight. Can't make the show this year, but looking forward to seeing the Fairfax show.
