  1. My apologies if this has already been posted. The Marching Roundtable podcast recently had an episode where they discussed the Top Ten Phantom Regiment shows. A very enjoyable listen. It made me go back and watch/listen to several PR shows from seasons past. Link: http://www.marchingroundtable.com/2016/08/07/538-top-ten-phantom-regiment-shows/

In particular, I was particularly blown away by 2010 Into the Light. That show is poetry and beauty and I don't think I really appreciated it at the time. Starting in the tunnel and ending in the opposite tunnel, the ballads, the drum line! I think it has snuck into my top 5 favorite shows!

Anyway, good luck to PR 2016! Glad everyone is feeling better, and can't wait to watch you at finals.

  2. Can't tell if you're being sardonic or just simply don't get the show.

Not being sardonic, trying to understand the storyline. I wish it were a little clearer what was going on. The explanations here have helped, but as I watch the entire drill I end up missing the 1-2 person character action.

  3. I was at the Atlanta show last night. Coats got the biggest pre-show cheer. More than hometown Spirit, more than regional favorites Crown. They have exploded in popularity the past three years.

As for the show, it was AMAZING! It had everything. Drum line, awesome. GE, awesome. Guard, probably awesome? They certainly have a lot of responsibilities. So much going on the field I wasn't really zeroed in on the flags, lol. Brass line, turnt up to 11!

I had watched various show recordings about 20 times, so I already loved the show going in. Even more amazing live. The music, the effect, the brass soloist are unreal. Bluecoats aren't owed anything. This show will win the gold because nobody's show is better.

The whole night was fun. Lots of great corps and kids. They all get credit, but I wanted to report to the Bluecoats thread that they are on a crash course with destiny.

  4. It matters. And it's not the slowness of the electronic transmission. That signal is fast. Which creates a gap between the natural instrument sound wave and the speaker sound wave as each travel towards the audience. The front ensemble speakers have delays configured for the gap from the mallets to the speakers so the speaker wave is exact to the acoustic mallet strike wave. These guys are pros and if they are going to do it, they are going to do it right.

Ah, I understand now. I thought you were talking about the signal as it travels to each pit members earbuds. Looking at the helpful picture you posted, I am now intrigued by their setup. I'll be honest, I've never paid much attention to pit setup (sorry, front ensemble :silly: ) before.

  5. I get the part about being able to hear the other instruments in the ensemble. What I don't get is how a front ensemble spread so far from side to side can get a uniform read on the sound/pulse coming from the battery. The pit player at the extreme end of side 1 is going to hear the battery a split second later/earlier than the pit player on the extreme end of side 2, depending on the placement of the battery. "Listening back" is Rule No. 1 of any front ensemble. First, all members of the ensemble must have an identical idea of the back-to-front timing before they can worry about the side-to-side timing. I don't understand how the monitors overcome the back-to-front issue.

Aren't we talking about the speed of electricity over the course of 30 yards or so? Would it even be a perceptible difference?

There is an agreement between the State of GA (who manages the current GA Dome) and the Falcons (manager of new stadium) that they must host the 'GA Dome Legacy Events'. This includes Monster Jam, Supercross, SEC Football Championship, Chick-fil-A Bowl, and others. I have not been able to find out if this includes the DCI Southeastern Regional (or the Bands of America Regional also held at the GA Dome every fall).

It does not include DCI. And costs may prohibit use.

I live in Atlanta and think the new stadium is a ridiculous waste of money. If DCI is ran out of town without a venue to perform in I will be beyond livid. Hopefully this won't be the case.

  7. I always thought it was dumb that they didn't have Field Pass listed as an iTunes Podcast or on one of the major netcast networks. Most people don't use naked RSS, but rather a larger service.

It was listed in the iTunes store and worked fine. Sometime during the season it stopped working. i agree it needs to be listed there again.

  8. My rankings, in order of my personal enjoyment.

    1. Crown - captivating, gorgeous, gut-wrenching ballad, fantastic guard. they were everywhere doing everything. I literally love every second of this show.
    2. Cadets - As a huge fan of Shostakovich, the combination of powerful music and locomotive drill left me breathless at the end. The uniform change was a little too reminiscent of Phantom Regiment's "A Defiant Heart" for my tastes, but did not affect my enjoyment of the show
    3. Bluecoats - Amazing amount of activity and music design. Great ballad and final push at closer.
    4. Blue Knights - The show didn't knock me over the first time I saw it, but every time I watch it it draws me in more. They zigged when everyone zagged, with a mellow and introspective show. Loved the new ending too!
    5. Blue Devils - Amazing sound and execution. I get the story, but honestly wasn't drawn in at all. Last year I was blown away by their guard. This year I barely noticed them. Since they beat Crown's guard, I'm honestly going to assume I missed everything they did and on future viewings will feel like an idiot for even mentioning it. Drum line and brass sounded amazing. As usual.
Hat tip to: Cavaliers and Scouts, looking and sounding great.
Kill it with fire: I'm sorry. No offense to any of the solo singing performances, but I just do not enjoy it at all.
