  1. It was only a matter of time before a thread about college band erupted into a Michigan/Ohio spat :tounge2:

I don't have to play favorites because I've never attended a university that has a notable football program or in my current case even a football program at all (kind of. I go to one of the other BYU campuses that's not in Utah so I guess I could technically claim BYU as my home team. I also have an inclination towards Colorado State because that's where I grew up.)

  2. He is thought to be a star; Brandon with BD, the young snare. He is featured in episode 1 of Clash of the Corps. Holy sh## he is good! Any new stars emerge this year? And winking does not make you a star.

Well, you can't deny that everyone knows who he is now haha.

There's also Anna Eberhart, the "possibly possessed keyboard player."

  3. An initial perusing of this thread turned up no mention for the dynamic duo of Matt and Ben Harloff from Crown. They're the men at the helm of that now famous brass program.

Also Dean Westman, currently show coordinator for the Bluecoats. He's had his hand in a lot of successful show designs, including the Troopers right after they came back from the (almost) dead and the last several years of Bloo shows.

  4. I think you have to wait.

But, isn't there a Fuse TV app?

There is, but from what I understand you have to already have a subscription to a cable provider in order to watch any shows on it. It will ask you to verify who your provider is when you try to watch anything. I know this because I downloaded it yesterday to see if I would be able to watch the shows on it...this is what I get for relying on Netflix for all my entertainment.

  5. According to the partnership announcement video, there will be a box on every video that will allow you to submit a donation to the corps. So each view on the video will generate some ad revenue, plus a reminder for additional donations.

Meanwhile, I'm helping run the social media accounts for the Troopercussion winter drumline, y'all should come like our page and follow @Troopercussion on twitter :music:

  6. It's the off season, auditions haven't even started yet, and content is needed.

Can someone explain how/when we went from symmetrical drill to non-symmetrical drill? I've seen lots of shows from the 80s, and it looks like the switch happened around 83 maybe? Was it everyone at once, or did corps slowly make the switch bit by bit? Was it an actual rule change, or could corps just do what they wanted and it just so happened that drill designers wrote symmetrical up until that point?

Any info on this would be interesting. Someone enlighten me.

I was always told it was Santa Clara Vanguard who broke the mold. Someone else will have to confirm the year.

  7. It seeeems like there's a big dead space in this time of year. Granted it's very much so the off-season, and the off-season was very exciting for the first little bit with the staff shufflings around. But some organizations similar to DCI, such as NBA or NFL (yes I know those examples are on a much higher scale), have found ways to keep their fans engaged all throughout the offseason.

So my question(s) is (are), is there a way to keep the engagement up during this dead time in between the end of the season and preseason activities/announcements? If there is a way, is this even a problem that needs fixing?

BOA/Your local band circuit in the fall, WGI in the winter.

  8. exactly. i get the whole "but we all want to have lives outside of drum corps" thing. but i think there's a lot to be said for keeping certain key positions around all summer. doesn't really matter if johnny guard tech or susie visual tech rotates in and out. but the key cleaning staff --i say keep them around as much as possible, all of tour if possible. if they have to miss one week, make sure the number 2 guy is there, not the number 4 or 5 guy.

I think this is the same philosophy most corps try to follow. All those extra people are techs, the head honchos and their #2's are around all summer.

  9. It's not really offensive, but I was told that after arriving out here. The church encourage's them to stock pile what you might need to survive for up to two years. The church also wants young couples to have many children. They've had UT to themselves for generations and I sense they're brought up to associate mainly with their "own kind". That's why in the St. George area, many parents do not allow non LDS children to their child's birthday party, even though they may attend school and play sports together. Coming from other areas of the USA and other religions, you really notice it. Yes, most are polite, but don't expect many invitations to events. From Wikipedia on Utah demographics. "A majority of the state's residents are members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). As of 2007, 60.7% of Utahns are counted as members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, although only 41.6% of them are active members Though the LDS Church officially maintains a policy of neutrality in regards to political parties,[12] the church's doctrine has a strong regional influence on politics." With so many LDS politicians, the church can persuade the pols to see legislation their way.

Sorry for this post, but I can take the hits.

I'm a Mormon, and I can say a good chunk of what you've said is stereotype or "Utah Mormon culture" and not actual teachings of the LDS church :)

But I really do not want to start a religious/political debate on DCP of all places, so that is all I will say about the subject.

    Drum corps, woo!

  10. I mentioned this in another thread, but one of the things many corps are trying to do is have a rotation staff because committing to a full tour every summer is getting harder. The vast majority of drum corps instructional staff members have jobs outside of drum corps, plus families for some and even college/grad school for others. The more people they have, the less strain it puts on people who can't afford to be on the road for long periods of time.
