  1. So...I bought a ticket to the show at MTSU knowing I had a business trip the following Sunday. Today I received an email saying my departure date is now on that Friday in the morning. It sucks. This was my only chance to see dci live.

My ticket is for Section 2R Row 20 Seat 19.

If you’re interested, send me a dm.

Mods, if I need to move this thread, just lmk. Thx.

Ummm.... Dan may or may not have been able to work well with others, but under his leadership Regiment did place in the top a lot including 2 world championsips. Moreover, the abusive personality issues of a certain person and subsiquent staff changes over the years did not really hurt The Cadets from 1983 =2015. So pinning it square on Dan for the wild competitive fluctuations of Regiment, especially the current downfall after is retirement, does not ring really true in my opinion.

See queen anne’s post about PS.

I have and thank you for your kind words. I’m not here to knock anyone and like many posters I’m frustrated at the direction the corps is heading. The Regiment means a lot to me as I’m sure it does to many fellow alums. This is why I’m asking FMMs, fans, alumni to get involved.

Singling out individuals to place blame on is counter productive and petty.  Dan and Tim Farrell did their level best to keep  Regiment headed in the right direction and I am very thankful to them for toughing it out through good and bad. We wouldn’t have had Spartacus if it weren’t for their perseverance. Will Pitts doesn’t deserve the disrespect shown in this thread. His product is improving...now to get the design team headed in the same direction.

Ranting/pontificating on a message board is not going to change the course the current board is on. It takes action.

Contact the BOD directly, call Mr. Valenzuela and voice your concerns. Ask them how they feel about the corps’ current standings. I’m sure the board would welcome some fresh ideas. If it’s a money thing, then we get involved in fundraising for the competitive season. It starts with a dialogue with those who can actually enact change. It’s time to hold the board and corps director accountable.

How do you know? Have you actually tried to approach them???? I doubt it.

Dan literally ran everyone off that didn’t bow down to him. The DCI community knew about this and that’s why no one wanted to get hired there.

  4. Considering the press releases from the corps have stated multiple times that this show is about female empowerment, I think the staff has once again embarrassed themselves. They’re putting out videos of MM’s telling stories about all the influential women in their lives. How could they forget to have a female composer’s work in their program? Shows should work on many levels of interests, so including at least one female composer should have been a no-brainer.

And btw, being PC is a good thing. It’s called having manners and respect for others. People who have issues with it are often projecting their “I can’t be an insensitive jerk anymore” attitude. Identity politics is about bringing attention to the gaps in society between the majority and minorities. If it offends you, take a moment to reflect why it does.

Saying I screwed up isn't always an act of courage.  I'm ok with more honesty saying we didn't choose a woman composer for "this" reason rather than caving in for political reasons.

Having no backbone is a weakness!

I know it’s not a true predictor, but you have to wonder how well they’re planning everything else.

I do think money is a big part of the problem. To attract and retain top-tier staff you have to be able to pay them. Both staff payroll costs and costs of running corps have ballooned since the 80s. We saw a lot of corps fold in the 80s because of the problem of paying staff being their means and then folding. It's definitely a problem. That being said, as someone who is not in the least qualified for any staff person on Regiment, even I would have had the sense to say, "Eh, I'm not so sure about that." I just don't get it. It's baffling.

It's even worse at Madison. If I was in charge and one of my designers brought that prop idea to me, I would have laughed thinking they were joking. When they replied it wasn't a joke I would have fired them. The narration was terrible too, as was the usage of the female player. What a waste of her talents.

Honestly, I don't know how these designers at Madison and Regiment actually have jobs. I mean, based on what I've read on here, most of us (if not all) at least know what NOT to do.

They don’t have the money to pay for staff of that level.

    Thank goodness for duct tape.

The talent issue with the Regiment (IMO) is not with the members. (I think you know where I'm going with this.) They can only perform what they are given. What's the saying, 'you can put lipstick on a pig, but its still a pig.' The overall design was NOT top 12 material (again IMO). There were several better designed shows between 13 -15. It could be suggested that 'reputation' kept them (barely) in the top 12. I know I'm burning bridges here, and will probably never be welcomed back in Rockford, but I don't care. It is wholly unacceptable for the organization to be in this position. That they can't seem to keep, attract, or develop top level design talent is distressing to me.

I think we all know why that happened.

LOL - that's why I said we'll never know what would have played out in that scenario, and why I said I don't think they would have finished top 6 (or probably 7) with that show had they had the most talented corps last year. However, better talent would have made the overall product better from a performance standpoint.

Sheer talent, after all, saved Crown last year. That show was also a big mess, with ineffective and pointless props, ineffective visuals, horrible costumes, a sub-standard guard, and it wasn't very effective as a whole. Their brass and percussion sections saved them last year. Flat out. Had Regiment performed Crown's show from last year, they'd have likely placed 11th also.

Never said talent was everything, but it is a valuable and key component any way you slice it. It can save you, as it did for Crown last year.

Thank goodness someone finally said it.

What I find sad is, supposedly, these kids are tremendously more talented than those in the 70s, 80s, 90s, yet IMO, their talents are being wasted when you limit their opportunities to showcase them by, insert drum break here, activate recorded section there, run around like banshees until the dog whistle blows, and other 'design' elements that, again IMO, do not involve actual playing of their instruments (while actually moving would be nice) or a coordinated equipment section. Then again, I'm a dinosaur. Look, there were some shows last year that I really liked, Vanguard, Boston, Mandarins, Cavaliers (until they changed the ending). I can appreciate the attempts at trying to be different however, the reality is, all the shows have the same elements, over reliance on electronics rather than attempting to create organically, playing the more difficult sections while standing still, overwritten (IMO) drum parts that compete with rather than complement the brass arrangements, brass scale runs that are thrown in whether or not they were actually part of the original chart, props that (IMO) do not necessarily add to the overall production value of the show (Regiment, BD, Crossmen, etc). But like I said, I'm a dinosaur.

Not long enough to develop? Did you not listen to BD in ‘17?
