  1. Funny how parts of Crossmen, and I'm sure other corps, don't want to stay in their home state. BK's percussion caption head, much of the perc staff, and a bunch of their MM's come from SoCal and they prefer kids from that area because they can hold perc rehearsals there, where most of them live, between full-corps camps.

Same thing at Crossmen. Much of their perc staff comes from southeast Ohio and they prefer Midwest kids for the same reasons.

You know, I'm not sure why this bothers me so much but I would hate to think that kids were being cut because they aren't from the right area. I know that BK doesn't do spring training because they are 'honoring the winter percussion season' , but... I know that my son's group is basically from 'a specific area' but I also know he made the group as an unknown from 1000 miles away and his not being able to practice in the spring away from camp was not an issue. Maybe I'm just upset because local drummesr have little chance even though they have a local Drum corps. Maybe drum corps drumming needs to move towards how the color guard works, contract in April or May. Come with your best and move right in.

  2. Brief review of last night's episode:

I thought there was huge lost opportunity by not showing the score announcements at the Indianapolis show. The quick flash of the positions just didn't cut it dramatically.

Good to see that Santa Clara got a brief shot. Bad to not see even a snippet of the two corps that beat Cadets.

The only reason they showed SCV was because the BD prop problems were a huge distraction during SCV's show. Pretty sure we wouldn't have seen them otherwise.

  3. In Ep. 3 they gave placements for all 6 corps at the Rose Bowl show. I haven't seen Ep. 4 yet, but that right there made it obvious there's more than just BD and Cadets.

Side note: I'm still confused why the show made it seem like Pasadena was BD's first show, whereas they did Cadets' first show as their home show rather than doing Indy. If you're going to fudge the details anyways (which I get why, that's fine) why not show Cadets under the lights at LOS?

In episode 4 , they show Denver vs. Indy opener. Although they didn't say it was a head to head, that might be implied until you see that Cavies were at both shows.

  4. I thought it was an odd creative choice to not have both corps' opening competitions in the same episode, but it will probably work given what I think will happen next week with the Cadets' shaky first competition contrasted with the Devils breezing through their first shows.

Well, they say that it was BD's first performance but actually it wasn't. Fresno, Sacramento and Stanford were the weekend before.

  5. I know of one potential 2017 member who said "Book me a November flight to Tempe. This is great news!"

Wow, I thought the same! I know of someone who reached out one time for a bit of mentoring when he was young and got nothing. Luckily he found the right people soon after!

  6. I don't want to tangent too much here, but how many west coast senior corps are there? I assumed it was mostly an east coast + Minnesota activity.

Kevin Gamin posted a pic of Freelancers Alumni performing this morning. I assume they are West Coast since I saw them at Stanford in June.

  7. Mike Jackson posted this on Facebook last night.

The short: I'm officially altering my position on the DCI field percussion judge. I wasn't necessarily sold on the specificity of a field judge; more so, the lack of an alternative method to experience blend, balance, subtlety, and nuance from performer to performer. Moving forward, I'd like to see a field clear of adjudicators. If given the opportunity, I would vote as such.

The long: In all these years, I have yet to be convinced that we have the consistent depth in our caption to truly benefit from the aforementioned opportunities. This is not meant as a derogatory remark. It's just the truth as I see it. The system does the best it can with all the imperfect variables in the mix. Do the judges get the exact and equal sampling from night to night, or corps to corps? No. Impossible. I am convinced the only way to truly level the playing field is by experiencing everyone in the exact same manner from the exact same position. As much as I'm going to miss the up-close-and-personal reads, they're too problematic and too inconsistent to truly be the equalizer they're meant to be.

I also have to mention and somewhat concede the criticism this season regarding the safety of the performers. This, of course, is difficult to challenge. How does one take the stance against performer safety? Yikes. With that said, I think some of the criticism was unfair. Historically speaking, field judges have been around since...drum corps. Looking at some of the hyperbolic reactions, you'd think DCI had just implemented this method. I believe the field judges were unintentionally set up to fail. They were not implemented until later in the season, giving them less time to physically acclimate to the intricacies of each production. How could there not be issues? I didn't like seeing these individuals ridiculed, nor the system bashed for allowing this historically omnipresent approach to percussion evaluation. Yes, I believe it's time for a change. However, we can do it in a way that doesn't point fingers nor humiliate fellow humans.

  8. I just read the contract my son signed.

    11. I understand that I cannot transfer to/from another Drum & Bugle Corps after March 1, without written authorization from the Corps Director or CEO.
All dues are to be paid before move ins, I believe. Also there are no refunds after May 1st. Also, parents have to sign if member is under 18.

  9. As a drummer, I can confirm that this is totally correct. Where two or more drummers gather to talk about drumlines, lot videos will be watched. Yes, the movement does make it a somewhat different animal, but what we're talking about is how good a drumline is, not how well they contribute to the show. Plus, a dirty drumline can hide behind the hornline. And so, although I love crown (they're my favorite group), there is no way in heck that they are better than the cadets. The idea is laughable; you guys should watch some lot videos yourself.

As the classic joke goes, how many snare drummers does it take to change a light bulb? 9, one to change it and eight others to tell them how the would do it better. Gotta love these competitors!

  10. I asked my son, one of these drummers, what his thoughts are on the other drumlines on our way home this morning. He said, I don't know, I haven't seen any lot videos. Leads me to believe there is value in knowing what the book and the lines' ability to play it. Probably lends itself more to content, of course but there is value there. Do judges ever listen to lot videos? Interesting question....

  11. Are you "freaking" kidding me?. $69.95 package won't let me access the content. Friday night was fine. Once again, my issue is with the DCI organization/administration. Not the students, corps, staff, volunteers, etc. It's DCI and their inferior products... Not happy.

Yeah, I was too cheap too buy the championship bundle. Maybe it was because I spent $700 for tickets!!!!!! They should just open it up.
