  1. I have seen the last 3 recaps and they are consistently placing 4th or 5th. Last night they placed 5th. They were 5th on Content and 3rd in Achv which supports my assertion.

If.....and that is a big IF....if the percussion staff has a shake up, they need to bring in the staff from the Bluestars. They are the same staff for Pulse and they have a conveyor belt of talent from Chino Hills H.S. to Pulse/POW and that pipeline can go right through to SCV, besides that staff loves Vanguard, they do a lot of the Gusseck warm ups, they would be a great fit. Mapes/Grom are a fantastic arranging duo. My 2 cents and sorry for being downer for an amazing season for Vanguard, love their show this season.

I wouldn't discount them just yet. This is the group that would have won drums last year if not for an off night at finals, a large number of vets and a Rennick book. If they need to pump it up they certainly will. I will add that the musicality is important to them so if they have to just pound drums for the sake of scores, I don't think we will see it. I look forward to the rest of the season.

  2. Can somebody explain Blue Devil's sailboat to me?

It's crude, it almost looks like a children's toy, or something that was hand made as a gift for a child. But now that I've seen it up close, I can see pieces of the drill formations are parts of the sailboat, such as the bow. (prow?)

It's the only thing that is out of place with the professionalism of the other props. Obviously that's intentional, and somebody knows the answer.

It must be a place holder for Clara's little sister who doesn't turn 9 until August 1st.

  3. We drove to Ogden especially to see The Battalion today because a lot of Denver drummers are in it and they won't be in Denver. And, of course, to see SCV. Facebook reminded me this morning that my son made his HS snare line 5 years ago today and he saw his first DCI show that week too, DATR Loveland. Marching his 3rd year in drum corps and his second year with his dream line.

Looking forward to seeing BD and BK again after seeing them at Stanford. But I love SCVs show again this year! And their drumline is the best!

  4. yet . . . BK move-ins began just after mid-May, around the 17th, give or take. So I don't know if the Colorado HS angle holds up. And my understanding is that almost none of their battery is from Colorado, let alone Denver.

BK reported on Sunday May 22, battery may have moved in a couple of days before that. Local high schools generally are done before Memorial Day. Discussion on Marching Roundtable about last year's show implied that designers let the show grow kind of organically and they aren't concerned about rushing that design effort. They have done it this way for several years but tend to say it's the weather. I think all the discussion might be getting to them this year though. Mike Jackson mentioned it on Twitter this morning. Things may change next year.

I too was there last night. The pit was all set up and the MM were all lined up and ready on the side of the field for a long time before they moved out onto the field. Maybe miscommunication somewhere.

The uniforms weren't as cool last night, earlier slot and lights were higher. They are beautiful but may not translate in LOS.

  5. At what point does the battery join the horn line in Denver?

    ADD:
So, do I have this right?
If I live in Denver and I'm in the BK battery, when spring training arrives, I need to buy myself a round-trip airline ticket to LA before I can join the rest of the corps in my own hometown? And if I live, say, in Illinois, I need to fly myself first to LA and then to Denver to complete the move-ins process?
If I have that right, it's like an additional off-season camp airfare expense for members of the battery.
Do members of the SCV battery do the same thing, flying out to the Rennick redoubt in Texas before joining the horns and guard in Santa Clara?

You are correct. I think there is only on Denver drummer in the Knights, though. I heard they were going to be in CA for two weeks. I also know there was a flight from Dallas to San Jose Saturday evening that carried about 95% of the SCV percussion. Glad there weren't any problems. A lot of the SCV kids are Texas kids and I assume a portion of the BK kids are California kids so there isn't an additional cost for them.

  6. My son had his hearing tested this week. No hearing loss. Four indoor, 5 marching band, and two DCI seasons so far. He has gone through a few pair of Etymonics and the cheapy foam earbuds. I know he wears protection at home when using the drum kit and practicing the marching snare but doesn't consistently use ear protection while on the drumline. He seems to know when he needs it. I feel better with his judgement at this point. Nothing more annoying than a musician that can't hear!

  7. I'm not sure that the problem is the talent committing to the local corps. I've seen a lack of commitment of the local corps to the local talent. Local volunteers committed to fund raising would love it if the corps drew from local talent. It is hard to get volunteers to work bingo, etc. when the corps is getting the majority of their members from out of state.
