Best SCV show in years, everyone thinks so.  Why are the judges afraid to make that statement.  Seamless transitions compared to other units.  Great color guard.  Awesome designed effects.  Wicked good hornline.  Best drums in DCI!  Total package.

Isn't the word "CONUNDRUM"? Asking for a friend. :8_laughing:

I understand where you're coming from, but the way I see it is that before she even comes in there is already so much great brass playing going on that it doesn't feel like the vocalist is taking away from any of it. People's arguments make it seem like the brass isn't even playing at all and that they only play when she sings which is very untrue. I guess I'm just looking for excuses to disagree with the harsh criticism that crown is getting but my point is, they play well enough in the beginning that I don't mind them getting "covered up" in the ballad and closer.

And I see where you're coming from too, and yes, I agree that the brass is incredible in the beginning before the singing. I guess I'm just greedy and I want that great brass to be the focal point through the rest of the show as well (except for a percussion feature of course). IMO they are just too good to be "covered up". In fact, I wouldn't want any corps' brass to be covered up that much. But that's just me.

  4. I have been a Crown fan for decades. I love almost everything they do. But I really hate that I dislike this show so much. Last night was the second time seeing it (first in the theater, last night on Flo) and even though they cut some of the singing, they didn't cut enough. I just don't understand why the vocalist is featured so heavily through 2/3 of the show. On top of singing way too much and for too long, I don't get that wild arm-flailing that she's doing for most of it.

I will reiterate what dozens have already said - why oh why would you have the absolute best horn line in all of DCI play back-up to a so-so vocalist (sorry, but if you're going to have a singer at all with that caliber of hornline, he/she better be insanely off the charts great!) for 2/3 of your show. PLEASE Crown, make it a beautiful horn solo. Or if you have to keep the vocalist, let her sing the first verse of For Good and be done. Then give us that beautiful hornline we all love! Trust me, it can hold its own without any help!

My husband, who is nowhere near the die-hard drum corps fan that I am, but who nonetheless watches the shows with me, said the vocalist was extremely distracting. He said "way, isn't Crown usually GOOD?" My heart sank because I totally agree. I want to love this show so badly for the brass and percussion and guard, but that vocalist is just not doing it for me and pretty much ruining the show.

    Sigh. :43_slight_frown:

I think at some point, somebody is going to have to stand up and change this progression path.  It's one thing to be a dinosaur and react negatively to all change, it's quite another to let a plethora of changes occur, and then not be able to get back to any kind of drum corps identity.  If we let this natural progression occur, at some point our activity will look no different than WGI or musical theatre.  The only difference would be the turf stage instead of a gym or amphitheater.

I don't mind the influx of electronics, but when you take away the raw power found in a 60-80 person hornline, that's a drastic change. By miking up small ensembles and leaving a good portion of the GE up to the guard, we are encouraging this change of direction. I love the types of sound that can be produced on a symphonic stage or delicately mixed in a recording studio, but those aren't the sounds I want to hear when I'm on those bleachers as a spectator.  However, maybe I'm in the minority now, and the show designers are always going to adapt to the perceived demand of the audience and the judging community.

I'm rambling, and my points probably aren't coming out as coherently as I'd like, but I guess my overall point is that groups are going to be relying too heavily on the microphones soon, and it's going to change show design, and how new people approach this activity.

    I agree completely.

There's a lot of talk about the vocalist..  I'll state right up front, that It grated on me..  but as a former professional vocalist myself, I will say that she has a VERY difficult set of circumstances to overcome, and I don't think she's going to be able to do it.  She has decent tone, sometimes, but is pretty "pitch-y", (which I suspect is partly due to the music not being keyed for her, but for the brass? )   it seemed a bit too low for her to get down into that alto "place" without being sharp.. She could make the high notes, when she belted.

..  as I've said before in this thread,  there's just too much focus on the vocalist.  She dominates the visual, RIGHT on the 50, all the time.  I would have loved it if she had just hit the first phrase of "For Good"  and then let the brass take the duet from there.  After "For Good"  I was just lost.  Sorry, I'm rambling, but I just didn't get it!  I couldn't focus on the brass, percussion, or guard, because all I could do, was cringe for her, every time she missed a note...  I have NO disrespect for her as a performer,  she has an incredibly tough task..  but if you're going to perform a song that's THAT well known,   your vocalist better be able to crush it!

    :( Crown...

You perfectly stated what I've been trying to since I saw the preview show. Just way too much singing. If they must have the singer, I wish they would have her sing the first verse of "For Good" and then stop. I don't like her being front and center for so long. Crown has the best horn line - why should they have to compete with the vocalist? Personally, I'd rather hear a great horn solo instead of a vocal solo - like the one from "Inferno". I'm not completely anti-vocals/voice-overs, but in moderation. I'm not a purist, but I still want to see and hear drums and "bugles" primarily. Crown's soloist is too much. And don't even get me started on the Cadets 8-piece choir singing for the ENTIRE show!

  7. I will be watching at the Columbiana Grande cinemas in Columbia SC. In the past, the theater has never been very crowded. Some high school bands bring their students (or else they just come on their own) but they have always been great bunches of kids and never annoying. Hope everyone enjoys the show!

The theater we're going to has reserved seating.  Regal Cantera Warrenville, Illinois.  I've never watched the event there.  I usually go to Randall 12 in Batavia.

A little dinner beforehand, then the show.  Enjoy, everyone!

That sounds lovely! Have a great time!

Don't use FloMarching!  The quality is terrible.  The streams are unreliable.  Then they bill you after you cancel!  Don't use FloMarching!

I used FloMarching for BOA and WGI (month to month) and have never had any of these issues. Never been billed after canceling. Quality was decent, and after upgrading my home internet service, any issues back then were probably on my end.

I wonder if it made a difference that I watched on their app on Roku.  It worked fine for me.  In any case, I may purchase the month of July for $29.99 but that's all.

I also used the FloMarching app on a Roku and had very little trouble. I've used FloMarching twice now - for the 2016 BOA and the 2017 WGI. I had very few problems. Had a few instances of freezing and buffering, but it was probably my home internet, since I had zero problems when watching at work on the computer. I'll be upgrading my home internet before the 2017 DCI season, so I assume that will take care of the few glitches, although nothing is perfect. I'm confident FloMarching will be just fine. It's already working for all the sports stuff, isn't it? *looks to the folks that use it for sports watching for comments*

FloMarching had serious issues Friday with WGI. I wasn't able to watch other days but I let my feelings be known. They obviously didn't have enough capacity to handle the demand

I watched WGI via FloMarching Thursday at work (shhh, don't tell anyone!) and had zero issues. Didn't get to watch at all Friday but watched all day Saturday at home (used the FloMarching app thru the Roku). Would go for a few hours with no problems, then buffering through an entire show, then would be fine again for a while, etc. I assumed it was my home internet, since I occasionally have issues when watching anything streamed at home, but who knows? I missed a couple of groups, but not enough to make me not use FloMarching again.

  12. Jacksonville's EverBank Field and Columbia's Williams-Brice Stadium are two other good options for DCI to move the regional... Except that they are also both non-turf.

DCI used to hold a show at Williams-Brice back in the mid 80s. And that was before the stadium was renovated and the size increased, so I'm pretty sure it would be quite big enough now. Plus I wouldn't have to travel! :satisfied:

  13. Which one as the fluegel horn soloist for The Academy did it first (recaptured in the big screen video segment shown later in the week) or Shayne O'Brien's wink after his solo with Bloo at the prelims and Finals; not done in Semis. ??

I apologize for not even knowing that someone from Academy did it first when I posted this (I missed that one). I was talking about Shayne from the Bluecoat's first wink at prelims.

Although having seen several since then, I loved all the "camera flirts" this year. I think "Best Camera Flirt" should be a new caption.

  14. I just posted this on the semifinals thread, but figured I'd put it up here for anyone who has already moved on from last night:

A question about corps' pre-show announcements....

Has anyone else noticed that Mr. Crocker announces the Cadets differently?

For any corps not from the state of Pennsylvania: "Drum Corps International is proud to present...."

For The Cadets: "DCI is proud to present..."

And last night, he didn't show title, either.

A trivial thing to be sure - not looking for black helicopters on the horizon, not forming any conspiracy theories. I simply find it curious if anyone else has noticed.

We noticed this while watching the live stream too. And thought it was weird. Like maybe the Cadets changed the name of the show and the announcer forgot what it was? Although I would think he has all that written down in front of him, just in case, no?
