    I have heard a lot of people (at least in my circle of band/drum corps nerds) mention that if GE wasn't 40%, and music should be 40%, then we would have a different champion...blah blah blah. So I did a little math, and made this past year's numbers so that GE = 30%, Visual = 30%, and Music = 40%, and here are the results from Finals night.

    Corps- GE - Visual - Music = Total (+/- from 2019 score) {placement by these numbers}

    Blue Devils - 29.475 - 29.775 - 39.0 = 98.25 (-0.075) {1st}

    Bluecoats - 29.5875 - 29.45 - 39.117 = 98.1545 (-0.0835) {2nd}

    SCV - 28.81875 - 29.1 - 38.767 = 96.68575 (+0.08575) {4th}

    Crown - 28.89375 - 28.7 - 39.117 = 96.71075 (+0.14775) {3rd}

    Cavies - 28.55625 - 28.55 - 38.367 = 95.4735 (+0.0735) {5th}

    Boston - 28.125 - 29.0 - 37.317 = 94.442 (-0.046) {6th}

    Blue Knights - 27.69375 - 27.425 - 36.933 = 92.05175 (+0.00175) {7th}

    Blue Stars - 27.16875 - 27.65 - 36.467 = 91.285 (+0.06) {8th}

    the Cadets- 26.55 - 26.75 - 36.917 = 90.217 (+0.379) {9th}

    Mandarins - 26.6625 - 27.5 - 35.0 = 89.1625 (-0.1375) {10th}

    Crossmen - 26.1375 - 26.575 - 34.833 = 87.5455 (-0.0045) {11th}

    Phantom - 25.95 - 26.1 - 35.384 = 87.434 (+0.196) {12th}

    The only change in placement came with Crown jumping SCV based primarily on the spread in music. The biggest jump was the Cadets based on their scores being much higher in music than in visual or GE. In the end, this was just a fun look at what would happen if we went to a music heavy weighting as opposed to GE.

    Liked looking at the numbers and the result. Thanks.

  2. I think a rule like this is kind of silly. But DCI and its members are in a way better position than me to decide what’s in their best interests.

    After observing this thread for a couple of years, it appears as though the rule serves very well some insiders (real or pretend, I wouldn’t know) who want to show off their insider-ness.

  3. The Bluecoats taught me this year not to dismiss anything too quickly as not useful on the field. Blackbird is one of my favorite Beatles, tunes, but I didn't think of it at all as a drum corps ballad until I first heard Blooo playing it.

    Get together smart, creative drum corps folks - as the Bluecoats did - and I think they could make a lot of source material field worthy, including stuff from Babs.

  4. I think there are multiple ways to adjust costuming to fit today's expectations and trends and yet still honor traditions. The Cavies have done this reasonably well, such as having drum majors always in a classic Cavaliers look (even if not always all green). BD does it reasonably well, too. PR struggles, though I like it when they bring back the helmets.

    No matter. For me, there are higher priorities for the Scouts going forward than great fussing over traditional or modern uniforms. Staffing, design, recruiting, etc. Should be an interesting - exciting, I think - year for all things Scouts. Will be great to see them take the field next June.

    I definitely agree that the BOD needs to be greatly expanded and include a variety of folks including those who have nothing to do with the organization.  Look at Boston's BOD, which many have referenced.  I think that is a great example to mirror.

    You might be right. My preference is for smaller - manageable - but knowledge and skills-focused boards. Many nonprofits (and small liberal arts colleges) suffocate themselves with large boards. Their selection process is weighted to satisfying various factions instead of getting quality board members.

    The same goes for alumni. All the corps should have a quality alumni presence on their governing boards (and of course, recognize alumni as a key group of stakeholders). But it's a mistake to think only alumni should be running these organizations. (I'd even argue that number of non-alumni > alumni.)

    You need quality management, period. It makes people feel good to have a bunch of alumni on the board or one in the ED's position. Often, that leads to trouble and one reason why so much of this stuff becomes politicized and emotional.

    He wasn't specific to auditions, and I think camps make sense to be where access is easy. But for auditions, why should Madison area kids have to travel away from Madison to audition? Local band directors would send a lot of kids to auditions when they were held at East which is a great way to generate interest in the corps. If they have to travel they can go to any corps that they want while Madison would be the path of least resistance.

    If I were a parent and my kid wanted to march I would not pay for him to travel to audition IF my local corps held auditions in town. Of course if I had a "her", I would travel with her to Devils!

    Madison should try to reestablish a presence in Madison again and holding and audition/clinic in Madison.

    Sure. Holding some of their auditions in Madison area makes good sense. Maybe camps make sense there, too, especially if they are less of a destination corps than before. I was pointing out that link to geography is no more, generally. Even Vanguard spent a week or two outside of California this June.

    Perhaps Madison Scouts could once again hold rehearsals in, oh I dunno... Madison rather than 5 hours away in Indy?

    Coats have been in Indiana in May/June for at least two years now. Cavies in Michigan. Troopers in Idaho this past year. Some weekend camps for some Midwest corps have been in Texas.

    I don’t think so called feeder corps really works in today’s drum corps. Maybe BDC is a feeder corps for the B corp but BDB is not a feeder for the A. B members still have to audition for the A just like anyone else. Plus the expense of another Corp is a added cost strain. Hence the cut back on both BD and SCV tours for their other corps for a local tour in Ca. And both and probably the two financially stable corps out there,

    Good points. I’m surprised at the assumptions these days that geography matters much. The kids are coming from all over. (And of course, I’m generalizing a bit.) It just isn’t the problem it used to be that there are several competitive corps around Madison.

    That said, not at all bad for some different thinking, as in something more developmental. Has to make economic sense, however.

    And not an unfair one, honestly. I guess there's just more to build on with a dark or angsty show theme — you can't have resolution in a show without conflict/tension.

    I think so. But is there conflict in Blooo’s show? As you implied, I think, it is far removed from those dark themes and it is without doubt a stellar show. Stellar-ly performed. When I watch it, I’m not really interested so much in a story or narrative.

    And having just typed all this, I realize for the gazillionth time that I know mostly nothing about show design. Just what I like and don’t like.

    Oh yes, angry and dark and righteous themes like the Beatles or the Fibonacci sequence!

    Of course you’re right. I was making a casual generalization - in support of an observation of the trend in a lot of (certainly not all) popular shows - in an online discussion forum where precision is  not quite at the academic conference level.

    The show is designed so well... everything is thought out and executed with extreme professionalism

    As far as an end-to-end, cohesive, even moving, show, I don’t think anything tops what The Cavaliers have this year. The other shows - so many good performances - are frenetic circuses in comparison.

    But circuses seem to score GE and visual points.
