  1. Serious question about Vanguard. So they scored .6 higher than the Blue Devils (who are obviously the favorites to win every year) despite missing a movement and a couple obvious big mistakes (like the ballad brass hit not being super well timed together and the electronic issues they were having with some brass microphones at parts). With that closer being as incredible as it is (if you haven't heard it already, you're gonna love it), could we be looking at a challenger for the 99.65 mark?

  2. it's at the point now for me where the Bluecoats are so good that they're making it less fun to watch the other groups lol. this already has surpassed anything the corps has done in recent years for me and it certainly could end up being an all timer with the right changes. for example, i got a couple beefs with olivia. first, the balance isn't consistently on point with the ensemble, and i understand that's a june problem more than anything else. second, i'm not a huge fan of how she's dressed or her makeup. i think it would be much more fitting to have her hair down, personally, and with much less eye shadow. she can work on the visual aspect of her performing a lot too and that's another thing that i don't doubt will come with more time. she sings wonderfully by all accounts though. there are a ton of opportunities for the body movements of the hornline (horn line??) to really seal some deals in terms of the difference between corps x and corps y. i hope they can do a better job of cleaning body than they did last year, i thought that opening dance sequence was very dirty even finals weekend. however, this group has already proven that they aren't last year's Bluecoats. love this show. really. like a lot.

  3. i was really looking forward to seeing this show - rather than just hearing it - but i wasn't all that impressed with the visual package. the group feels a little thin at times. maybe the uniforms for both ensemble and guard blend into the field, maybe they have an abnormally large fe, i don't know what it was. the group just looked small to me, and it left me feeling like they were lacking something.

  4. copy-pasting my post from the prediction thread:

i have to make an apology. i had the bluecoats 6th going in... this was maybe my worst prediction in anything ever. i had no idea that session 44 would turn out to be maybe the most well-put together complete packages in a program i've seen. it's impossible for me to not smile at any point during the show, the performers are already killing it, and the visual/musical package is breathtaking, saro and the closer especially. i cannot wait to see where this program goes, and cannot wait to see it live in august. i have to say my favorite moment for the time being takes place in the growth toward the climax of saro when the lead trumpets carry their chairs over to right in front of samuel, sit down in them, and play a rushing line that leads into a beautiful high note that cuts through the rest of the sound in the most perfect way. i love this show. i think it'll end up being the highest placing show to not come out of california - that being 3rd behind vanguard and blue devils in some order.

I wore the uniform and shako..PROPS to you for knowing it is a shako and not a hat....it's a bit overrated...and BITD was made out of materials far better suited for winter months...and with the body movement used these days...just would not be possible with the traditional style uni...but I do on some level see the disappointment as well....we have moved into a new area of costuming...I'll assume by your screen-name you are referring to Boston...even last season...Boston was NOT anything close to their traditional red & black uni's...not EVEN close...it was a HUGE adjustment for me as a alum to take in ...but I've since embraced it...

you might be my favorite DCPer :)

Concerning the BAC/Cadets 2016 talent level, I have to say that the one time I got to see them both live at the same show, Cadets seemed to have a higher talent level than BAC, and that's not due to design. Any musician can take a song and make it great. BAC however, did not in 2016.

wait... are you saying that quixotic presented the same level opportunities for the members to succeed musically and visually that awakening did? and that the staff were of equal level? it sounds like you're saying that the talent from the members of each respective show were equal but that the talent didn't apply itself as much to quixotic as to awakening. because if that's what you're saying BOY do i have some news for you.

EDIT: btw my final preseason predictions will be up sometime saturday night (wish i could wait til like thursday morning to get all the info i can, but i'll be travelling from sunday til friday morning - won't be able to see the season opener because of it... :unhappy:) packed with explanations for each slot. and for my mike greeneberg tease: coming up, i'll tell you why the back half of the finalists will be even more of a toss-up than the front half...

  8. oh my goodness i totally forgot to mention marimba spiritual. that may go down as the coolest percussion moment in dci history tbh. it's so cool and so intense and so exciting. the whole show seems to be game-changing in terms of front ensemble non-musical involvement, especially marimba spiritual. incredible.

I appreciate you not being snarky, this is also a discussion board and I wanted to know your thoughts.. wasn’t too random of a question imo. That’s interesting though! I can see what you mean, do you have a lot of insight on crowns show, and that’s what makes you think it lacks in the total package? Or just from those captions and concept mentioned that makes up your prediction?

I've seen the first few minutes and it just kinda lacks a cohesion right now for me that the other programs don't. that's sorta stock crown but i also just can't even imagine the direction this show could take. to be honest as far as the crown show goes, i'm in on bruckner and high brass feature (which is awesome), but other than that as a complete package of a program, i'm out.

That's probably why some corps have been successful for decades.

the statement i made in what you quoted was also kinda meant to go after the cadets a bit, in terms of the "act freely" phrase. i don't think gino and colin were given the freedom that they have now and it's beautiful to see what's happening now that they do.

What makes you think crown will place 6th this year? :35_thinking:

if i were like most dcp users i would give some snarky remark like "because the groups placing in first through fifth scored higher," but i can justify it. i truly think the top 6 is going to be a bloodbath and i think that you need a complete package to truly succeed this season... those i have in the top 5 (aside from cavaliers, who i kinda just took a flier on) all have the complete package - no weaknesses. i don't think crown's guard and percussion (and seemingly vague design for that matter) are going to be enough to keep them up near the top.

  12. i was really hoping to make it there, but i couldn't get off work in time. however, i heard a recording of the show and i liked what i heard. definitely sounded like a different identity than we usually get from academy. i think design wise, this show has the potential to be my favorite from them, just needs to get some execution goin'. but definitely some top 12 potential in here.

  13. this is what happens when there's actually funding in drum corps. you can have winter camps in florida (where over 50% of the membership resides, according to holland on facebook), spring training at a college campus in vermont with the members having access to the dorms and the college's dining hall. you can have your pick of the litter when it comes to staff and when great design is let loose to act freely and has great instructional staffs, talent frickin comes. so what we see this year will be a result of that. money talks, but in this industry, money effin' yells.
