Unpopular opinion : Carolina Crown deserved to win last year and the Bluecoat's show was somewhat overrated.

I mean unpopular yes, but as I have said on this thread before this is not too unrealistic. On a different day crown may have won, scores were pretty close.

    1. (tie) BD and SCV, even though this could never happen due to that stupid GE rule

    2. Cadets

    3. Cavies

    4. Crown

    5. Bloo

    6. BAC

    7. BK

    8. Madison

    9. Colts

    10. Blue Stars

    11. Crossmen

    12. PR

Now this is what I like to see from a pre season prediction having 2 finalists from last year dropping out (Academy and Phantom), having 2 of last years medalists drop out of the top 3 and putting Colts in 9, I have one word, aggressive.

Hmmm, as far as Cadets, the new fundraising guy who was with Crown the past three seasons posted on FB today that he was at camp last weekend and was "blown away by the Brass book" so not sure Cadets are in a downward trajectory. Time will tell but I think Cadets are poised to push back into a more typical Cadets ranking this season.

My thing with claiming a corps is on a downward trajectory is that it can at times be unclear. Like maybe the Cadets will put out a fantastic product but so does everyone else so maybe they are on the up and ups design-wise but not so competitively.

Maybe its just a matter of other corps getting better rather than the Blue Stars having "problems".  Last year "bottom 5" + Madison is shaping up to be a real slugfest.

A good point I always forget but that reminds me that just about every corps in the top 15 or so has something to prove or something different from a staff perspective which is gonna lead to an explosive season.

The Blue Stars, Crossmen, Madison Scouts, and Academy are all on the hot seat.

Now I'm curious and I've asked this on the thread before why are people thinking stars are in trouble? They look good to me is there something besides there somewhat inconsistent record in the past few years?

But more to reply to your post. Maybe folks were drinking when they watched the Bluecoats show, because skate board tracks and microphones usually don't create a stir like the one you are making reference to.

IMHO the reason that show had so much hype was because the Bluecoats in '14 and '15 the Bluecoats had highly innovative, and popular shows that could have won in the right year. People saw a Bloo victory as inevitable and people were excited to see a new corps win.

  8. So I was watching Madison Scouts 1988 and the crowd seemed really excited; the only other show I'm aware of that got a similar reactions was Bluecoats' show this year. I was wondering if y'all could think of any other shows that got a similar kind of reaction from the audience? Or any shows that got a particularly negative response?

I don't see BK and Phantom dropping out, but Blue Stars for sure.

As I'm looking at info I have from corps, recordings from camps, staff changes here is my revised list:

    1. Blue Devils

    2. SCV

    3. Cavaliers

    4. Bluecoats

    5. Crown

    6. Cadets

    7. Blue Knights

    8. Phantom

    9. Madison

    10. Boston

    11. Crossmen

    12. Academy

What info? and also why are stars definitely out?

I think he's saying there is a scenario in which any one of them could make it in.  I agree for the most part.

Madison Scouts for sure.  Seems like lately when someone gets knocked out they really rebound the next year so I expect them to be more than in the fight.

Troopers have been on the cusp for 4 years now...that's gotta be tough.  They're always one aspect away.  If they all line up it'd be hard to keep them out.

Blue Devils B...we'll see.  In the 2015 offseason months the conversation was VERY similar and they had a readjusting year as well around 17th - 20th I believe.  With a large chunk of I think visual staff heading to Madison Scouts this year I suspect we might see something similar.  But maybe not.  I think their Open Class show last year was the best OC show I've ever seen in terms of performance quality and probably could have made finals in the very recent past.  When the stars line up it's scary.

I think Colts have the performance capability...need to see another show before I include them in my conversation.  Just needs something a little more defined and that stands out from the very crowded group.

Mandarins have the show design down.  It's all about gradually increasing the depth and difficulty over a few seasons.  Not sure if I see it in 2017 but 2018 and on if they move up again?  Game on.

Oregon Crusaders are a great visual program away from shooting up really fast.  They have the absolutely fantastic creativity and uniqueness down music design wise and they can play the crap out of their shows, just gotta get the visual program on the same level.  When that happens I feel like they'll shoot up really fast.

There's been a penchant for awarding tight score margins recently it seems.  How many times have we said in the past few seasons "oh man look at 1-4 they're like 1 point apart" or something similar about 11-14?  When multiple corps are regularly finishing within tenths of each other, it only takes a breakout year or a stumble to shuffle the ordinals around dramatically.  Bluecoats could end up 5th and Cadets win it and I wouldn't be too stunned.  Crossmen and Academy fall out and Troopers and Madison come in? Again, plausible with the right shows.

This all leads to higher competitiveness levels which will lead to an even more fun season.

Yep, but what Im saying is that Colts arent just to going keep up, theyre going to catch up.

I hope so. I feel like the competitiveness in placements 13-25 is increasing and it is really good for the activity and really helps get away from the idea that WC is the finalists and a few other corps.

Great post.  I would probably add that Colts move up.  Lots of great staff changes.

I feel like the bar is just getting higher, I feel like few corps will actually end up rising because of increased competition. IMO a few corps are gonna fall from an inability to keep up.

    (2) the fact that the corps is not even guarantying you the right to march with them next season, but is imposing a financial penalty if you march elsewhere,

This is my only objection to the policies, but other than that I'm not sure why legal adults (or parents agreeing on behalf of their children) cannot make a contract with stipulations and face the benefits and penalties of a contract as they arise.

The finals bubble is almost harder than GN;)

The thing about GN and BOA in general is that it feels more random as groups can do so different year to years, band can drop or rise 15 places in a year where as in DCI those showing up is consistent, in all likelihood Bluecoats don't drop out of top 5 in the worst case scenarios. The biggest drop of recent I can think of is Phantom dropping 1st to 9th which was pretty extreme.

I really just do not want a Hamilton show.  I mean it definitely fits, lots of drum corps shows based on musicals.  It could be pretty well transitioned.  I just...I dont know it doesnt sit well with me.

Yeah, I've heard some people claim Hamilton isn't super complex musically, which could make it hard to translate to drum corps.

That is very true. But that problem can be abated by having camera operators and producers that know the activity and what to look for. FloMarching obviously did not. The detail of shot selection and timing everything perfectly won't be like it is when TB and crew are doing DCI shows. But it would be better than FM where they would do a 20 second long closeup of a kid playing rack in the front ensemble or linger on a guard member doing an equipment change behind a prop.

    Very true
