The green skirts on the guard blending with the field is part of this 'deconstruction' theme isn't it?  Along with the poles laid to make the yard lines look like they twist, I wonder if they haven't got some big GE stunt to pull with a new ending where alll these bits come together in some way that totally redraws the field.

It's starting to all come together, isn't it??!!!!!?????!!!!!!????!!!!!!

Overheard some kids from Crown talking as I was walking about and one kids said "man I just really want people to like our show this year". I stopped and told them I love the show and to please tell the singer she is doing a wonderful job. Their faces lit up and they said thank you so much.

Remember these kids / young adults are giving it all they've got every day to put in a show for us and I appreciate that a lot! Have a great show tonight Crown!

If you see anymore Crown kids after the show, please let them know there are many of us out here that LOVE the show!  I can't wait to see the extra minute added to the ending Friday in Muncie!

Bluecoats brass sure are something speical. That closer really lets them show off just how good they are. However it's pretty early and I think Crowns book is harder. I expect Crown and Bloo to trade off Visual prof. and brass show to show.

We will see what happens to music scores once Crown adds their extra minute in the closer in Muncie.

Just throwing this out there (and in the end, will probably regret doing so):  Could it be that the show designers thought that at this transitional part of the show, it's the LYRICS of the song and not just the melody that bridges between the 2 halves of the show?  Maybe that's why they wanted to have a vocalist and not an instrumentalist performing this piece.

Sure, most of us are familiar with Wicked and know this tune; fewer probably know all the words.  For me, it's hearing those lyrics that sets up the rest of the show, something IMO even a superb mello/bari solo could not convey.  Music speaks to the heart; lyrics speak to the mind.  And I believe they want you thinking about what has come before and what you will next experience.

I've said my peace and I'll go now.

I believe this is exactly what is happening!  The fact that people are talking about it so much and not liking it or really liking it is what it is supposed to be doing.  It is the bridge between the traditional drum corps (old school).  Was is For Good?  Is it Not For Good?   Then the new age of the closer of No One (which is going to continue to evolve all summer) where the vocalist is singing about losing direction and not sure where she is going.  How will drum corps continue on?  New direction like Bluecoats or are we going to stay with some of the old school For Good?  Should people want drum corps to be the first half of Crown's show which is traditional or should they really like a new direction that many in the activity are starting to take and which Crown is trying to emphasis in the second half of their production?

I really don't understand a lot of the hate for the singing. It's not like hornline isn't play for an extended amount of time, they are certainly playing just as much as they usually do during the ballad at least. This is the first time in my memory that I feel the singing actually enhances a show, guiding us through this metamorphosis  (No pun intended) and this story that they are trying to portray of this creation of a new identity for Crown. I've heard they are planning to add another 45 seconds to 1 minute onto the end, can anyone confirm this?

    Yes.  Another minute still coming.

Big difference here, the singing is an accompaniment in the Cadets show. It's choir music that's setting the mood for the theme of "Mass."

This is straight up from a Disney movie.

But like you said, things can and probably will change.

Agree with you totally!  I'm hoping for some changes and I am fully expecting adjustments and tweaks!  I just see great potential in this show considering it's only June 19th.  Can't wait to see all the corps and see how the entire summer plays out.

Just to add, Bluecoats use of the slides, the use of speakers throughout the football field to create a new soundscape, the use of a giant tilted border around the football field, these are all pushing the boundaries of what has been done in the marching arts.

Singing? Been done, and been done in a more effective and tasteful manner before (By Crown themselves too in 2013 and 2014!). Dedicating 5 minutes of your show to a singer being the main feature over your strongest asset (the hornline) in the hopes of "pushing boundaries" and "deconstructing" the future of DCI will do nothing but push the audience's patience.

Singing has been done and will continue to evolve (Cadets are going to test that this year).  All I'm saying is IT IS June 19!  If you think it's a gimmick (either good or bad), I can't change your view.  Tough to really judge the singing or show concept at this pointt (especially when a minute of the show is not even on the field yet).  You may not like it now but I'm sure their creative team will be tweaking and cleaning all summer and the product we see in late July and early August will more than likely look far different than their preview show on June 18th.

Would you call a gold medal a gimmick?

Sliding up and down the slides wasn't done for sh*ts and giggles. The theme was Down Side Up, as in down on the football field, hanging from the side of the ramps, and playing instruments on top of the ramps. It's in the same vein as Tilt.

Hey!  If a gimmick works then great and it worked out for them.  Let's just let this play out and see what happens with Crown's show this year.  Some people will like it, others will not.  That is the nature of the beast with drum corps now.  They are trying something new just like Bluecoats last year.  I didn't like Bluecoats at the beginning of the year last year but it grew on me and learned to accept it.

I don't know, personally I think the Bluecoats are the future, and they certainly don't have any singing in their shows.

    This more screams "gimmick."

Would you consider running around the field and running and sliding up and down ramps a gimmick?

  10. I've now watched this show numerous times now, and I LOVE it more and more every time I watch it. I'm old school and have never really enjoy singing but I am coming to accept it and take it for what IT IS.  IT IS part of corps now and the activity will not go backwards.  IT IS an evolving and creative activity and singing is part of it now and I am going to try to enjoy it and accept it.   As far as this show goes, I have been watching different sections of the field each time to try and take it all in and there is so much going on it is just CRAZY!!  I can't wait to see the additional minute of the show they have yet to put on the field and to see how they continue to clean this monster and add more and more layers.  Potential is unreal!

This will get GE, no doubt, but I think it will take a few weeks to get there. They still don't have the transitions nailed yet, but again they're still in learning mode. I can't wait to see them clean - and the cool thing is they will be in Charlotte for a few days in early July. So hard to describe this show, but seeing it in person you can tell it has a TON of potential.

IT IS........going to be an incredible show to see develop over the summer!

Saw the run through last night of the 11 minutes that are on the field. Tons of potential. I love just about everything about the show, including the vocalist. They had some guard costuming, brass and percussion in shakos, and most (all?) props on the field, and in parts, what I assume are show flags.

Lots of stuff to nitpick, but it was a spring training run through, so I'm not going to be critical about anything I saw/heard, when overall, there's so much to enjoy about the show.

Agree with everything you said!  This show has so much potential and so much will be added as the season goes along.  Brass is as strong as ever, guard appears in good shape, percussion seems to be strong (which has been lacking in previous years according to scores), and there is a huge emphasis being put on GE.  All the elements for success!

I know last year they rehearsed in Lucas Oil the day of Tour Premiere. I wonder if they'll be doing that again?

Madison is rehearsing and doing a clinic at Lucas Oil prior to the Tour Premiere and then they are leaving and won't be part of the show.

Good gracious. That's one helluva closer. Man oh man. There's a hint of the old Crown in there but it's a new sound for sure. It sounds like the type of closer Bloo would do but I sure am glad Crown is doing it. It brings the show together for sure.

I believe this closer is going to be the one everyone is talking about this year!

I watched the 8minutes video and thought to myself it isn't really looking like much now, but then i take another look two times and i definitely see the potential of something really special and i hope i am right. its really really rough now but i do see this show could end up being very special. i love the music and the ballad is beautiful but it needs work to refine the soloist to blend in well with the assemble than singing over the music and whole segment of that part of the show. its not clear what the show is about, cause we still don't know the full concept yet, but i do like what i see.

    Where is this video?

Went to GW last night hoping to see ensemble but the corps was working in sectionals. Brass on the main field, drums by the dorms and not sure where the guard was. The corps is still working through the opener, and as previously mentioned, there is a LOT of body movement happening and you can tell they are still in teaching mode. I would say the corps is about 2 or 3 days behind schedule at this point, probably due to weather we've had here in the Carolina's the past week or so. Musically, drum line was working on the opener, which is fun and chaotic. Quite a few notes to get through in the brass and drum book. The kids are doing well, but it feels like a steeper learning curve this year than in the past. 17 days until the preview show, 3 weeks tol the opening show in Indy. Will post another update next week when we go out.

Disagree that they are 2 to 3 days behind schedule.  Totally opposite of what the corps is being told and what I'm hearing veterans think.  They were also given the night off last weekend.  I don't believe this would have happened if they were behind schedule.

Going back to Crown 2017, I know the corps was looking for a strong female vocalist during the offseason. Any updates on this? Have any of you who have seen Crown live recently heard her or heard about her?

P.S. If any of you are suddenly realizing this and crying wolf, remember that Crown had vocal groups in 2013 and 2014, so it shouldn't come as a total surprise.

Have heard all the music and it's incredible as usual from them!  Have not heard the female vocalist yet!
