Nobody said she didn't earn the award.  I certainly didn't say that and I don't think that.

I was giving my opinion about what I like seeing from a conductor on the field.  I guess I'm not being specific enough.

The fact I like a particular conductor's style and performance does not detract from nor disparage anybody else.  It's my PERSPECTIVE and my OPINION, not an official DCI award.

    But it should be.

Sorry, I wasn’t trying to put words in your mouth. Read a little too fast and rattled that off. Both (and the rest) of the DM’s this season did a great job.

Didnt realize this would spiral out of control, I hadn’t even had coffee at work yet when this started.

Well, from my point of view with my butt in the seats, the conductor who impressed me the most waving his arms around and showing tremendous emotion and energy was the Vanguard guy standing on the podium, 30 yard line, left side.

If you sat on the right side of the 50 and disagree with my choice, that is a perfectly valid disagreement.  It's about perspective and that's mine.  :27_sunglasses:

Amazing, no doubt. He was just as enjoyable as the marching members on the field.

He also didn’t have the unenviable position of leading and keeping together a corps who went through what the Cadets did, and still manage to defy all expectations of what their corps could do. She earned the award.

  3. Top 3:

2005 - the year I was introduced to DCI; never saw the actual video until a month ago, but the power and pacing of that show is what sold me on the magic of drum corps.

2009 - I'm always surprised that a fan base constantly asking for more melodic shows and a music program that allows the music to naturally progress would place this show in their least favorites. It is so not drum corps - except for a few 'aha' moments, there's no classic "peel your face off" moments until the company front at the tail end of the production. Just a gorgeous program through and through.

2016 - White and red uniforms + pure class. What more could you want.

many people would like to hear this fantastic-ness while they sit in the seat they paid for; not the distorted version.

I think only 12(?) members are mic'd throughout the show, although they do have mics along the front sideline. But having sat inside their horn circle at Pasadena, that brass line can peel paint off a wall. The sound you hear from the stands is almost entirely unadultered brass, and same goes for BD

Is PR really amplifying their hornline with mics upfront?? Is there something I'm missing there, like is there a purpose other than to fake more volume, cause that seems like a real bummer. That can't be a normal thing with other corps right? I know Bluecoats does it in their ballad when playing backfield but that's nowhere close to as sketchy imo since it's obvious and transparent.

They are and it's definitely noticeable, especially when snares are crabbing by them and they're magnified x1000 (unless that's part of the show, not sure yet)

At the Santa Barbara show, every corps had mics arranged across the front of the field and the amplification is pretty clear.

Brass guys help me out.  LOVE the ballad, but it seems like the main melody is done strictly by soloists, which is fine, but it seems to get drowned out by the rest of the corps as they blast the harmonies. I come away wishing more lead trumpets were on that melody. Maybe it's just the audio quality of the videos I've seen?

Having seen their show in-person 3 times within the last 24 hours, I could barely hear any soloist throughout the show. Now, that was all fine and dandy for me because there was a wall of sound coming my way, but at the moment the entire corps' projection and volume is just too good to allow the solos to come through.

So you know, silver linings? I'm sure they'll dial in the mic situation.
