All these corps are going to contribute to the growth of DCI. As of right now, from what I know, these corps are determined to enter open class by the years that they have set. If these 11 corps are successful in joining DCI's open class, there will be a total of 57 corps competing in DCI competitions by 2020. I have listed all the corps websites and I urge you all to visit them and learn more about the organizations that will be a part of drum corps future! If you know any other organizations that are planning on joining DCI's Open Class within the next 3 years, please post them below and I will add them to the list above!

    Hi everyone,

as 2017 comes to an end, I thought that it would be nice to take some time to look back on the events that occurred in 2017. For starters, Blue Devils won their 18th title in 2017 and celebrated their 60th anniversary.    Also in 2017, the Santa Clara Vanguard finished in 2nd and also celebrated their 50th anniversary as well. It was the first time Santa Clara Vanguard medaled since 2004. Also in 2017, the Cavaliers, the Boston Crusaders, the Madison Scouts,  and the Mandarins made incredible jumps in 2017. The Cavaliers managed to slide into 4th place at DCI finals ahead of the Bluecoats, the Boston Crusaders finished in 6th place and beat the Cadets for the first time since 1980, the Madison Scouts made it back into the finals and finished in 12th place, and the Mandarins had their best season ever and finished in 13th place, their highest placement ever. They also finished the season with a 85.550, their highest score ever. Lastly, to conclude this list, we have Genesis and Music City. Genesis finished their very first competitive season in world class in 2017. They finished in 23th place and scored a 76.213, their highest score ever. And finally, the biggest headline for 2017 is Music City’s move to world class. Music City finished in 4th place in open class finals and finished in 24th place in world championship semi finals. In open class finals, Music City scored their highest score ever and scored a 76.763. In the world class semi finals, Music City scored a 74.275, their highest finish at DCI world class championships. Overall, 2017 was a great year and hopefully, we will have many great new story lines next year in 2018!

  3. Hi, everyone,

before I get to my next match up episode, I wanted to take some time and talk about uniforms in DCI. Uniforms have been around since the birth of the marching arts. However, starting in 2016, a movement began. The Bluecoats won their first championships wearing costumes that were customed designed. When the Bluecoats made their departure, other corps followed the same path. In 2017, The Santa Clara Vanguard, The Blue Knights, The Cadets, The Madison Scouts, Gold, Southwind, and The Guardians made the move to costumes. Seeing this movement makes one wonder how long do traditional uniforms, ( shakos, plumes, jackets, and pants ), have until they  cease to exist in the Drum Corps World. When looking at the costumes themselves, they have both won championships and lost championships. In the 2016, The Bluecoats won their very first championship wearing costumes. However, the following year in 2017, The Bluecoats, The Cadets, and The Blue Knights finished lower than they did in 2016. On the flip side, The Santa Clara Vanguard and The Madison Scouts finished higher than they did last year in 2016. Santa Clara Vanguard managed to climb up all they way into the top three for the first time since 2004 and The Madison Scouts made it back into the finals after finishing 13th in 2016. For the Open Class Corps, The Guardians, Southwind, and Gold became the first open class corpsnto wear costumes. The movement of using costumes has spread to both the World Class Corps and the Open Class Corps. In my opinion, I like uniforms and hope that they stick around in drum corps.  Now, in this thread, please post below what your thoughts are on uniforms and costumes in DCI.

  4. Hi everyone,

welcome to episode 5 of my corps match up series. In this episode, we will be looking the Cavaliers and the Bluecoats. Looking back at the 2017 season, the Bluecoats did some tremendous things. They continued to move away from “traditional drum corps” and are exploring new ways to perform their shows on the field. They finished 5th with a 95.163 at finals. For the Cavaliers, they still kept their traditional corps look in their uniform but it’s slowly becoming more fainter and fainter year by year. Also, the Cavalier did an amazing thing the night of finals. They managed to slide ahead of the Bluecoats and went from 5th to 4th. They finished finals with a 95.200. Having said all that, who do you think will score and finish higher in 2018. Please vote in the poll above and we will find out!

  5. Hi everyone,

Here is episode 4 of my match up series.

Looking back at the 2017 season, one of the biggest story lines was that the Boston Crusaders beat the Cadets for the first time since 1979. The Boston Crusaders finished 6th and the Cadets finished 7th. Looking at both corps, the Cadets moved away from using uniforms and shakos and made the transition to costumes. Also, the Cadets bought back a show theme from an earlier show that they did in 1983. As for the Boston Crusaders, they kept wearing uniforms and stepped up their game competitively. They beat the cadets for the first time since 1979. Also, the Boston Crusaders moved from 12th to 6th in one season.

Having said all that, who do you think will score and finish higher?

Please vote in the poll and we will find out!

IMO, there is no way to say that any scores from this season will indicate competition between corps. For example, Coats went from 1st to 5th (2016 - 2017), Boston went from 12th to 6th (2016 - 2017), and Madison bounced from 6th to 13th (2015 - 2016). Once either corps shows consistency in placement, we can make an assumption about future rivalries.

That being said, the scouts shouldn’t have even been in finals this year. The 2017 show had far less substance than their “unsuccessful” 2016 production, and I personally believe that the show this year wasn’t even in the same league as the rest of the top 15.

The Mandarins will place higher than the Scouts, but only due to the Scouts (program coordinators)  shortcomings

Hey, I respect your opinion regarding making predictions this early and the involvement of using scores to make predictions. This is just fan based and opinion based.( the poll attached ). Thanks.

  7. Hi everyone,

Welcome to the third edition of my match up series. In this edition, we will be looking at the Madison Scouts and the Mandarins. Looking back at the 2017 season, both corps accomplished many great things. The Madison Scouts pulled forward and made a return to finals after placing 13th at the 2016 DCI World Championships. They finished 12th in 2017 and changed their look for the first time since their founding by breaking away from the corps historical look. For the Mandarins, they had a successful season and finished 13th at the 2017 DCI World Championships. Throughout the 2017 season, the Madison Scouts and the Mandarins banged heads with each other and the competition got so intense  that at almost every other competition, the corps would place right next to each other. There were some points in the season where the scouts would finish ahead of the mandarins at one competition and then at the very next competition, the mandarins would finish ahead of the Scouts. From all of this, it is very clear that the two corps are going to be battling it out again next season. Now, in the poll that is attached, please vote for who you think will score and finish higher!

  8. Hi everyone, as part of my drum corps poll series, I’ve come up with my next match up. Throughout the 2017 season Pioneer and Jersey Surf went head to head at numerous competitions throughout the season. At the DCI World Championships, Pioneer finished 34th and Jersey Surf finished 27th. Even though there is a gap between the two, that gap might close up next season. Pioneer is on a mission to field a full Corps next season. Within the goal of marching a full corps next season, Pioneer has a goal of marching a full hornline of 80 brass next season. As of right now, they have 44 brass members registered for their first camp in January. They expect to have their full 80 man hornline by their march camp. Also, pioneers 2018 production Irish Dragons is going to be a show that is going to be the beginning of a new era for pioneer. With this new growth for pioneer, Pioneer is on a mission to rise to the top both competitively and as an organization. Pioneer is going to be a force to be reckoned with next season. After having said all that, who do you think will score higher and finish higher.

Please vote and we’ll find out!

  9. The 2017 season truly showed the non competitive side of drum corps. In 2017, Music City lost a marching member, Phantom Regiment lost one of its bus drivers, Legends almost folded on tour due to lack of funds, Pioneer lost one of its tour vehicles on tour, and when all of these events happened, immediately there were other corps who came in and helped one another. You can only find this kind of love and support in drum corps.

if you have any stories like these, please list them below and let’s truly dive into what drum corps is really all about!

  10. After noticing that Music City finished 24th at the DCI World Championships and that Genesis finished 23rd right above them, I began to wonder who might score higher because they are right next to each other from a scoring standpoint. Attached is a poll and please vote for the corps that you think will score and place higher than the other.

  11. The Hub City Guardians began with the idea to bring a drum corps opportunity to the students of West Texas. We wanted to create an experience for students that was affordable and local, designed with our area of the state in mind. We could not possibly have anticipated the huge interest this would spark in areas outside of Lubbock and the surrounding communities. Musicians from all over the state have expressed interest in what Hub City has to offer.

While this means great things for the future of our program, we did not plan or anticipate the extreme interest we have received. It would not be fair to you to promise an affordable and complete experience when we have not prepared for our many prospective members who are traveling great distances to attend camps. With this in mind, we’ve made the decision to push back our inaugural season to 2019 to provide our staff ample time to prepare for the large group of interested participants.

Thank you for your interest in The Hub City Guardians. We hope you stay connected with us over the next year and hope to see you in 2019!

When looking at this facebook post above, I thought of some possible theories about the future of the Guardians Organization. According to the post above, they take Hub City Guardians to the field. There was so much interest in the new corps that if the Guardians organization ran both corps, it would be to much for the staff to handle. That being said, my theory is that once the staff have prepared for the large amount of prospective members that are interested in the corps, the Hub City Guardians would eventually replace the Guardians in open class. That being said, as a result of Hub City Guardians replacing the Guardians in open class, the Guardians Drum and Bugle Corps would move into World Class. Once that happens, The Guardians Organization would be the first organization in over 45 years to have a feeder Open Class corps and a World Class main corps. ( The last organization to create a feeder corps for their main corps was Santa Clara Vanguard in 1971 ). Again, this is my theory. Please share below your thoughts on my theory and please share your own theories that you may have!

  12. After hearing about Storm Drum and Bugle emerging out of Indiana, I wondered if there were any other states that have only one drum corps in them and states that are getting a drum corps for the first time. Below is a list of drum corps and the states that they are from.

Storm Drum and Bugle Corps - Indiana - Plans on joining DCI's open class in 2020

Arsenal Drum and Bugle Corps - New Mexico - Plans on joining DCI's open class in 2019

Appalachian Gold Drum and Bugle Corps - West Virginia - Plans on joining DCI's open class in 2019

Armada Drum and Bugle Corps - Idaho - Plans on joining DCI's open class in 2018

*Arsenal Drum and Bugle Corps believes that years into the future, there will be a new drum corps in the world class division from the southwest. :)
