And think about it.... if a corps did a Grateful Dead show, they might attract a bunch of fans who would attend every single contest the corps was in!!!

They would be selling grilled cheeses out in the parking lot for $2 a piece and I would not hate that at all. Watching Crown's hornline warm up while wolfing down a hot ham and cheese is potentially my idea of DCI heaven!

  3. 1996 Phantom Regiment

They pushed all year and their show at Finals show that year was just mind blowing. They were entrenched in a dogfight with the rest of the Top 5 and finished 4th at Quarters and third at Semis but were still more then a point back of BD heading into finals. They dropped one of the epic performances I've ever seen and pulled even while winning brass. The power and emotion out of that show IMO has been unmatched since.

  4. This is a really interesting topic and one that I feel deserves so looking into by the activity as a whole. I am a little surprised that it happens as much as the original poster stated but not following that portion of the activity that heavily anymore it may be a valid number. Essentially it boils down to the kids and how far they want to go to follow this dream of being a part of an elite group in this activity. I know of a lot of groups that offer video auditions but past that point it would probably be a requirement to be present at their off season camps as it should be. Although I'm 100% in the camp that the corps should keep the kids individually abreast of where they stand at each of these camps and their possibilities of making the group, there is no way to regulate this so we can just hope that it is being done. Although I marched many moons ago, I made a decision to travel from east Tennessee to Orlando ( about a 120hr drive) monthly through the winter and then a few times a month in the spring because I wanted to be a part of something special. Not saying it's wrong but it's just something that needs to be taken into account on an individual basis.

I agree there, especially on the singer. Especially when they changed much of the back half of the show and featured the singer more. How do you take one of the best hornlines over the last decade or so, and have them be the karaoke track to a singer that is marginal at best? I still don't get it.

I couldn't agree more. I could understand the technique if they were a middle of the road line and they were just trying to hide them behind a singer, who mind you did a beautiful job, but it just pained me every time knowing that what may be one of Crown's best lines they have put out behind her.

  6. This is without question goes to Crown's horn book/show from last year (2017). The inclusion of the singer halfway through the show in my opinion took one of the better hornlines that they have had in the last few years out of the picture. I think that it hurt the overall effectiveness of the show and although they probably wouldn't have beaten BD that year it was still hard to watch.

  7. Cinemark Tinstletown in Bristol,VA for Prelims and then my recliner for Semis and Finals. I've made the trip to Indy for finals a few times and just really don't enjoy DCI in indoor venues enough to justify the cost involved with that trip. I know I'll probably get some blowback on this because it may be seen as an unpopular opinion but just the way it is.

  8. One of my first experiences w/ DCI was going to a show in Salem,VA in '93 to see my cousin march in Bluecoats that year. I was a 14 year old high school freshman and one of my distinct memories was rolling through the parking lot with my younger brother and there were tailgates everywhere. As I was walking through the lot I heard a recording of the BD closer from "92 and literally just stopped in mid stride and just sat there with my jaw on the floor. I was absolutely hooked at that moment and then seeing a show live was all it took.

  9. I aged out 18 years ago but still have a recurring dream of missing the bus after the show and having to ride to the next show site with a competitor. This luckily never happened to me but it definitely did to others and I couldn't imagine the fall out from something like that.

  10. Good morning! I have a question that I should know but have never really given thought to. My brother has a son who is 13 and is a huge fan of Carolina Crown and they will be traveling near Gardner Webb on Saturday and he was curious if everydays was open to watch or closed to spectators? I kinda figured it was closed but through I'd reach out and find out for sure.
