    Agreed.

600k is not a lot. Yes they will get more with member fees. But the fact of the matter is that they're a Cali corps and have to travel further. Gas will probably be 150-200k of costs alone.

That 600k will be stretched thin, especially considering member fees cover very little when it comes to the actual cost for the member itself.

I worry that SCV will approach this season like they are still a top 4 drum corps and spend way beyond their means and run out of money halfway through the season.

So yeah. At what point does liability insurance be come a thing here?  Do corps carry it?  I'm thinking of about the kind of liability insurance churches and religious orgs carry for these reasons.  That, as has been shared by a number of us in these conversations with familiarity with church workings, has been THE driver of church orgs reviewing and implementing better practices.

if a corps has no insurance being carried regarding the tour, that corps is a lawsuit from from going poof faster than SCV.  (sorry, its just the most recent model of a corps going poof for the nonce).

If they are carrying insurance what point do the insurance companies look more deeply into the touring model and go, uh...if you want this covered your premium is gonna be WAAAAAY up here.

Insurance premiums have killed many things that would be considered enjoyable. A lot of tourist train excursions got real expensive real fast at the turn of the 21st century.

  3. This is sad and shocking news out of Santa Clara tonight. We hope for the very best for this storied organization as they tackle the obstacles ahead of them. We'd like to limit discussion to THIS THREAD ONLY for this news topic. Any other posts will be deleted so that the page isn't overrun. We encourage everyone to approach this topic sensitively and with empathy as many people are hurt and saddened by this news. While discussion and discourse is encouraged we will still moderate according to the group rules as needed.

    1. Not saying I fully agree with the poster in question, but your first comment comes off as very “high horse.” People have the right to their opinion even if it doesn’t align with yours.

    2. free speech much?

    1) Corps have the right to restrict access to rehearsal sites, much like a tenant has the right to restrict access to their apartment/condo/etc from the general public. If a corps has expressed the desire to bubble up; you can either respect it or possibly enjoy the hospitality of the local jurisdiction

    2) DCP is a privately hosted forum, the 1st amendment does not apply. Read the terms of service upon signing up.

Like most corps, Spirit of Altanta has a board of directors.  The board is the overseer, and has the right/obligation to terminate anyone who does not handle their responsibilities, especially including anything involving the well-being and safety of the members.  The main problem that I see is that other than one member removed after a month of abusive behavior, nobody else was held accountable, and also events reported about the rookie talent show were ignored.  DCI has placed the corps on a 2 year probation with expected steps during that time.   What concerns me is that it is likely that individuals (staff) who did not properly respond to things possibly remain in their positions.  Had this happened in a school environment, there would have been disciplinary action (and likely removal) involving multiple members, and any adult (including the director) who did not respond fully to what was going on would be subject to termination.  Termination of any and all staff/management who did not respond properly and promptly should be a quick responsibility of the board here.  Doing so will send a clear message to staff and management that they have a serious responsibility to respond promptly, properly, and professionally, to anything reported to them by anyone in the organization.....members, staff, support staff, etc......you can put a million pages of documents together on "policies", but if there are not consequences for individuals/all involved when incidents such as these occur, the documents are meaningless.  I do not see where DCI demanded investigation/actions involving all involved....just policies "moving forward".  If I were a parent of a young SOA prospect, I would want assurance that the individuals who failed to act and or/"downplayed" things are no longer there.  I also think that DCI needs to have a "do not hire" list....when someone is removed from staff/management for reasons such as these, they should no longer have the opportunity to show up at another corps......ditto with member misconduct.......

You hit every point I just told my wife.

Unlike your avatar it’s not that easy. Invite corps that some people don’t want to see and you lose customers. Lose customers you could lose money on the show and the corps this show helped to finance. There’s another one of the corps that could fold…

And that's where promoters and those smaller corps need to come to an agreement of, "hey, you're smaller than our paying customers want in a full show.  Put on an exhibition at the start, follow up with a couple charts as scores are tabulated/run down.  We'll even toss in a couple mentions of, 'if you liked what you saw, so-and-so corps is looking for more members for this season or for next year.'"  Show promoter promotes the mini-corps as an opener, pays an appearance fee.
