The final performance was their best of the year.  That margin between 12th and 11th was quite small.  In the end, they tied with PR in GE, came in 11th in Visual, and lagged just enough in Music to put PR ahead in total score.

Fans can argue with those numbers, but they "is was they is".

The placement may have been one slot lower this year, but the corps certainly was as good, if not better, than last year.

Oh that's a no brainer. This is the best group they've had since they've moved to TX. Some design things are what held this hornline back from being top 10, but regardless it's even more impressive that they're manly high schoolers. I honestly think last year's corp probably wouldn't have made finals this year. The top 15 was just insane. Hoping it continues to progress.

as headgear goes away, this is inevitable.

That said, the aussies are definitely not what is keeping the Crossmen from scoring higher than 12th.

agreed. :/ The show didn't grow to where I had hoped, but I still enjoy the music aspect of it! :)

Attended the show tonight - was a great night of music with perfect weather! You know it’s been hot when low 90s feels kinda cool. There was a strong breeze throughout and the wind definitely had an affect on flag work for some groups.

While it was a great night of music, the issues for first-time host Mesquite were extremely evident. I’m not sure I’ve seen more confusion over seating in my 20 years of attending DCI events. The local volunteers didn’t seem to know where to tell people to go and at times were giving conflicting information. People were frustrated but found spots to sit (usually not where their tickets were) and there was so much shuffling between corps. There were issues outside too getting in to the venue parking - it looked like lots missed quite a bit of the event just trying to get in.

I’m sure DCI will get lots of negative feedback on this one. Lake Highlands is a smaller venue for the Dallas area but it’s been part of the DCI schedule for 40+ years and is well run. Given that history I heard fans yell several times near my section that they hope it returns to Lake Highlands next year. I’m a fan of drum corps so don’t care where it is, but  hope the event can be better run.

The lineup more than made up for the issues tonight - just wanted to share what was going on from the stands!

Couldn't agree more. My friend and I paid $60 to be on the 45 yd ln to find out that they had messed up the seating, so we were forced to sit near the 20 yd ln. The people around us also had the same issues.

Anyone know if Crown had a rough night tonight based on scores, or are the other corps just that much better than Crown?

That much better (in my opinion of course). Crown is just as good, but still has more things to tweak from a design standpoint compared to the other three, but it's MUCH better than where it was in Orlando. Completely different group.

I'm willing to bet they place a little higher than that. From what I have seen and heard, they are AGES better from previous years.

With a bunch of high schoolers no less. This is by far the youngest group they had in years. Only a handful of vets.

I heard the key parts of the uniforms hadn't arrived yet.  So, there is more to come visually.  Their debut competition will be streamed on the 23rd.

That is correct. I've seen a photo of it. It still sticks to their traditional uniform. Compared to the drastic changes the other corps have done with their uniforms, theirs is a nice relief haha Although I will say that the top part that was missing is a bit active in the middle. Cool otherwise.

I attended two of their evening practices and it was hard to believe they had been practicing all day in 98 degree heat because they had so much energy left.

In their second week it was over 100.. not to mention since they rehearse on turf that adds another 10 degrees.

Even though it's a short piece, it sounds very good.

Not all of it sounds like this, but their hit moments do indeed have this same drive and energy. At times you can hear the youth in the sound (manly in the quieter sections), but compared to the last few years this has been the best I've seen and heard this corp. It's early, but this is a great start. They have their preview performance tonight so I'm sure videos will be posted.

Uhhh, is this Crown or Crossmen?!?!!!?

It's Crossmen. Not bad for a bunch of high schoolers that have never marched in this activity right? I wasn't joking when I said they're aggressive. :) The average age of this year's group if I heard correctly ranges between 16-18.

I acknowledge my own bias when it comes to this corps and always fear I'm overhyping.  But when I hear others confirm what I saw and heard myself, I begin to wonder if maybe my positive feelings aren't "overhyping".

Yeah this year is different for sure. I know most have them under their radar, and that's exactly how they want it. It's exciting. I've never been the biggest fan of Crossmen, and I don't mean that in any disrespect. The shows just haven't captivated me, but let me tell this show has changed my opinion. It's going to be a memorable one.

  11. Watched the Crossmen rehearse two nights ago. I will say this...They definitely won't be a 12th place corp, and I wouldn't be surprised if they placed higher than 10th. These kids are aggressive both on and off the field. Visually it's quite dirty, but man those kids are playing with energy that I've never heard from this corp in the last 15 yrs, and what's more surprising is that 80% percent of them are high schoolers (average age is 18). To say that they sound better now than where they were in August last year is an understatement. The arranger did some incredible work to keep the music as close to the original with Tchaikovsky 6th Symphony. Looking forward to seeing how they progress.
