Santa Clara Vanguard: Drum corps kids are getting younger! No... I'm getting older. Back flip guy is back!  The sections are all good.  Great stuff going on.  The show hasn't clicked yet, but it will be awesome when it gets there!  This ballad definitely works.  SCV's guard is moving toward the body movement camp!  Tenor feature!  It's an excellent show.  Great technical stuff going on.  Not yet feeling the emotion.  No doubt it will happen as this matures.

Agreed, but back flip guy isn’t back.

Why would this cause you to dislike BD? They had an opening, and HE applied for it. This was his choice to go for the gig. But yeah, it's BD's fault he made a personal life decision.

    #youwinlogic

No, he was on top of the mountain and chased the $$$. BD was second last season, something  they disdain. Get used to it! It was Michael Gaines that made SCV into the BD Nightmare.  The lead horse has now got another viewpoint...and the scenery won’t change.

Don’t have time to read thru everything at finals. Bluecoats at least stretch the field.  In my 33 years following this activity the vanguard show (great music) is the worst show ever to win.  The lack of stretching the field is a joke.  The drumline barely moves after the opening

When everyone follows this crap and condenses the field look no further than this farce of a show.  Uttterly disappointing.

If Crown or costs played this no one would have any hearing left.

While SCV has a very entertaining show I swear there are brass members that never go to the back half of the field or outside of the 25.

Im convinced that people are just tired of BD winning. If Crown played SCVs show you might not have any hearing left.  In my 32 years of watching finals (BD won me over in 86) I have not disliked a winning show til now.  I have always had great respect for other corps but this show is beyond easy considering how talented the performers are.

    Flame away.

Who won the Ott sir? Mic drop!  And as far as field coverage, watch the "my body is a cage" solos. From 20 yd line to 20 yd line w/ plenty of fill and guard. They just move so slick, you weren't able to comprehend it. The judges did.

I loved Santa Clara's show this year, but not nearly as much as I loved Ouroboros. The lack of drill and limited field coverage was something that I had not expected from SCV.  Babylon was brilliantly staged, but I hope the fact that it got them a World Championship doesn't cause other corps to follow with programs confined to a small part of the field.  Blue Devils victories over the last decade and a half were done with programs that utilized props that framed the parts of the field where they performed.   But let's not forget that prior to that the Cadets and Cavaliers won with fast paced drills that covered the field to a much greater degree.  Changes in the rules have put body movements and dance on par with drill.

If winning or moving up the ranks like SCV has done means a performing on an ever diminishing stage then Drum Corps might end looking more like Blast than an actual field show. I hope not.

Not entirely true. In the staging of the ballad, you had the mello's going back and forth from left to right. Go back to that point in a yew toob video and look at the field coverage. One soloist on the 20 yd line side 2, the other on the 20 yd line side 1 and the fill was fairly comprehensive and lots of guard everywhere. They did use the field between the 35's as more of a stage front and center, but it fit with what they were doing. As far as field coverage, they just moved so fast...few noticed how they expanded and contracted. Just my thoughts.

A number a 2017 VC kids auditioned, a few made it. My son actually touched on this when he called me after Finals as he had spoken to two of his ‘17 brass buddies that were in the ‘18 A-corps line. Both his buddies talked about how vastly different the social environment was, and that ‘17 VC to ‘18 A-corps wasn’t an easy transition at all. They were their own support group. It was a mixed bag— in the beginning they felt and were treated like outcasts, but they worked extra hard and things gradually improved. I was stunned and saddened when my son told me this, but he added the same elements existed during the 2017 Rose Parade gig he did which was a mix of VC, A and alums.

Let’s face it: social brutality happens. But, IF the nexus of that brutality is indeed rooted in a high school level “Oh, you only marched the Cadet corps (rolls eyes)” mentality in other MMs and/or staff members then perhaps the organization hasn’t progressed as much as I thought.

Very true words. SCV A-Corp was my son's first foray into DCI after coming from a very successful HS band program. The first 2-3 days, he called and said "I think I made a mistake. I feel like I don't belong here." But he's resilient and powered thru and once he had the trust of his corp mates and the staff...he was loving it. He's already hinted at doing it again in 2019. Of course being a world champ helps that adrenaline level.

I would like to see them end on a real high energy note next year. They have been doing "glorious warm and fuzzy wrap-ups" since at least 2014 and I think they leave some crowd frenzy on the table a bit. The finale this year was moving and very appropriate to what they were doing with the painting, but it allowed for a pretty truncated applause moment. It's been a while since they have done an intense finish, so maybe time for that?

Agreed. There seemed to be a bit of audience confusion once the painting was complete, and then the appearance of the mute trumpeter in the window cut-out for the final soft ending.

I would characterize this as "click-bait"

There is the Bold title, and "epic fail" descriptor.

There is a list of accolades that qualifies his musical knowledge. All of it is a little bombastic when it just comes down to a simple opinion, and we know what they say about those...don't we?

From my seat exactly on the 50 and high up for all 3 performances, the gymnast seemed only to do gymnastics (and some quite dangerous) and hid behind the props for the other 85 per cent of the performance. Shades of the Cavaliers' circus show from pre-DCI days.

The gymnast did a highspeed pass down the hornline, the ariel on the prop, some moves in the cage on the right, and was the feature right middle prop  at the end of the Gents and jawns dance.

  10. Well there was some definite funk and I'm thinking it was 4 loads in total. Wasn't keen on tossing Nike/Adidas shirts etc even though they were funky. Did a lil pre-treatment soak in Snuggle fab softener for about 15 min, then a wash w/ some "fresh air packets" and viola! Now the white appearing socks that came back gray...those were beyond help after having shuffled across many gym floors etc.

I like the letter of declaration.   For <18 year old members, parents are likely included.  Loved all of the coolness on display this season.  With SCV, specifically, I would have preferred to see one or more marching members directly behind the prop to spot, and help break a fall if needed.  These kids clearly knew what they were doing.  I just want to prevent any upward pressure on the need to do such tricks.  Leave it to Cirque du Soleil.

True words. Turns out the guy on SCV is a former USA Jr. Olympic National Gymnast and a World Champion cheerleader. He was interviewed at the Atlanta SE Regional, and they said he had a lot of knives in his arsenal.

Propapalooza... with the focus on bigger more dramatic props, will we see the first major injury involving a prop in 2019?

The bigger well-funded corps are likely taking reasonable precautions concerning design, construction, and best practices... but what about younger groups trying to emulate the top?  What if someone stumbled off an SCV-like platform (say, while attempting a back flip)?  What if someone (like a judge) got stuck under a Crown-like rocker?  How many of these props would pass OSHA standards?  The #### will hit Boston’s spinning compass the day someone gets hurt.

Typically, the corp member(s)...lets just say for example the teeter-totter CG's in Crown, signed a letter of declaration that they were responsible and could perform the stunt to their level of skill and safety. That was then signed off on by the board of directors. I would assume when it comes to unconventional props and the potential for injury, this would be a standard practice. Regardless, doing a stationary back-flip on a platform w/ wheels and no padding while 8ft off the ground (a la SCV)...not for the faint of heart. So a tip of the cap to all those young men and women who do those things for the GE they garner and the crowd reactions they receive.

As I sit here in Chicago’s glorious Midway airport, watching my plane to MSP get delayed not once, but twice, I thought it was the perfect time to say THANK YOU to all of the corps, the young people that pour their hearts into it, and the staff and volunteers who give of their time and talents to bring such a wonderful thing to us each and every summer. Every year I wonder if it’s going to be the year when I decide it isn’t worth the money or effort to get out and see a show. Like many here, I have a lot of other things that drag me in several other directions. But each year, this activity creates something new, different, and dare I say “better”?

Hello, my name is ajlemm, and I am a drumcorpsaholic.

Well the first step is admitting you have a problem. Hope to see you at the Annual meeting in Indy about this time next year.

Well, from my point of view with my butt in the seats, the conductor who impressed me the most waving his arms around and showing tremendous emotion and energy was the Vanguard guy standing on the podium, 30 yard line, left side.

If you sat on the right side of the 50 and disagree with my choice, that is a perfectly valid disagreement.  It's about perspective and that's mine.  :27_sunglasses:

Yeah, that was Mykal McGrew and he's an animal.

Overall impression of 2018 DCI Finals! I'm so ready to go home!

    1. Santa Clara Vanguard - WOW! Music, drill, brass, percussion, guard, visual and amazing show design. Well deserved Champion!

    2. Bluecoats - Oh man, great performance tonight, the show design was amazing.

    3. Boston Crusaders - Loved the guard, geez, it was a night to remember!

    4. Blue Stars - One of my favorite shows tonight! LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the show!

    5. Mandarins - great performance, welcome to the club!

That Blue Stars guard is so under-rated. Ask any other guard crew who does the most and makes it look easy...they'll say BAC and Blue Stars.

I just wish certain folks would stop trying to nitpick at their win

Let BAC's guard have a little time to relish in their GUARD VICTORY

It was a very special WIN for them.

After that Zingali announcement, their lil group was like a mosh-pit of intertwined hugging. They were so freaking happy and it was fun to watch.

It was so much fun! Tons of Alumni there as well. But the best part was walking back into the JW Marriott at 2:00 am...the roar was deafening. They were so hungry for a win after 19 yrs and it was a really special moment to share it with all of them.

When my kid called me last night from the Indy airport (at 2:30 AM Indy time ) he wearily mentioned that after 3 years in SCVC he has his sights set on being a part of that 2019 A-corps effort. Keeping my fingers crossed...

I can imagine. There were several of the cadets at the end of season Brunch that had the same thought. You could see their faces light up when Directors asked about who might move to A corp.

I think there will be some soul searching. Essentially, BD got beaten at their own game not just by SCV but Boston as well on the CG side of the equation. 2nd place, no captions, and there were nights where their brass was not the strongest. Hmm....

And BD was scary close to getting beat by Bloo as well. The BD run on Saturday was much better than Friday. I know they tried to move past the window issue, but there was a soloist issue as well as a tear from a reverb. They were back on their game Saturday though but still only about .4-.5 from Bloo I think, which was uncharacteristic.
