Will be at Robinson Cinemark in the Pittsburgh area, bringing a friend who has never seen drum corps before so hoping they enjoy it. Snagged the last two seats in the corner of the top row (only other seats were nosebleeds) because sadly, it's one of those cinemas where you HAVE to select seats preshow. Still excited for a fun night, and to seat some corps I haven't gotten to see live (including Boston due to an unfortunate misunderstanding of the Massillon intermission end time :/ )

Well let us know what they think of DCI. I'm always curious about the thoughts of the newbies at their first show. I remember I was like....JEEZUS!

    Florence, KY on Thursday

On the 50 in 640 on Friday

On the 50 row 4 of 140 on Saturday

It's like 3 entirely different shows over 3 days.

See? this is what I wanted to do, but since we're leaving from Dallas at the ###-crack of dawn and will have a late Friday night in Indy...we decided BLL would run too late ion Thurs for us. But I'm still excited! Enjoy MikeZ! Love your 3-show plan

I'm anxiously awaiting whether the audience will put one in or not. It seems like the design staff planned for it to go after the mello sustain near the end of the show. In previous years when the yell was a "thing", I seem to recall that the audience would have been doing it for most of the summer vs. right at the end of the season.

I think that's completely accurate. People have been so absorbed w/ the show and waiting for specific moments like "here it comes" that the anticipation of elements has taken the place of the yell. There's just so freaking much going on!

  4. I doubt the record is in jeopardy. As others have noted, you need a LOT of captions locked at #1. The concerns in captions would be Brass (Crown has been winning), Guard (BD and Boston). But you can probably chalk up a w in Percussion, GE, VP ( were at a 19.500 most recently) MA, but I'm guessing a 98.85

Hahaha! No, it's not the same thing and my reference was NOT flawed. BD show concentrates on the stories of the characters in the painting. They take a literal painting backdrop and build that. The Tower of Babel thing is more figurative, and I don't see it out of their show. If they went to some huge and tall stage at the end, that would be cool...and maybe it will happen. Two great corps going at it. I like all of the top three. They all have their pros and cons. Not my favorite BD show lately by a longshot, but I haven't seen live since Riverside. I'll never count them out though. I love SCV's show, but was mostly getting across that it should be okay to NOT have a theme. You attending this week? Maybe I'll buy you a beer.

Will definitely be in Indy and excited to see what changes take place across all corps.

You see, there you go. Talking about SCV's show IS NOT TALKING ABOUT BD'S SHOW, MAKING A COMPARISON OR OTHERWISE DOING ANYTHING BUT ANALYZING THE SHOW. I've judged for many years, and I'm breaking it down from a judge's standpoint. Obviously you take my analysis as an offense, and attempt to insult BD as some sort of retaliation. Well, it's DCP after all. Should expect this. Buh bye.

Not insulting BD at all. They are the best drum corps in the land and they have proved it 18 times! They know what they are doing and i’m Sure you know that too. But your Babel tower reference was flawed and my corellary although anecdotal, was accurate. We can just agree that there are different strokes for different folks.

Vanguard's Babylon leaves me cold - it's a continuation of old snake eyes from last season - anger is it's main emotion -

I do like the clever use of the platforms - that is neat - and the baritone soloist -

the show is not life-affirming as most Vanguard shows have been in the past decade - it's just loud loud and louder -

but what the hell, if Boston can't win this year, SCV has earned it the title this year and they have waited a long time.

    There’s always this:

The World Chess Championship 2018 is an upcoming chess match between the reigning world champion since 2013, Magnus Carlsen, and challenger Fabiano Caruana to determine the World Chess Champion. The 12-game match, organized by FIDE and its commercial partner Agon, will be played in London between 9 and 28 November 2018.[1][2]

    Not quite as loud. Enjoy!

Not agreeing or disagreeing, but it is interesting BD's show didn't have that effect for you, as it literally involves putting a bunch a pieces together to create a work of art.  :w00t:

That’s a puzzle. The art is at the end and just a rendering of another’s creation. The music,  mood and movement is the focus. Just like SCV, and BDcorno’s comment about the Tower of Babel being 6-8 feet high. That’s like saying there wasn’t a painter with a brush in the BD show.

Steve Jobs said: Creativity is just connecting things.

Picasso did not invent red. Stravinsky did not invent dissonance. Giacometti did not invent sculpture. Like any artist, they all took existing concepts and materials and put them together in innovative ways that play on our senses. The gestalt of this re-assembling process is what we experience as art, and not the viewing of individual pieces. And the gestalt is a mental processes. This is the "it" that other folks here have referred to.

Drum corps is a highly constrained art form, given the physical limitations, the high levels of skill required by the (young) participants, the logistics, the difficulty and cost of building a design team, and the need to entertain while also competing. There are a lot of great drum corps shows, but few truly transcend these limitations to create genuine art. Fellini-esque did. Downside Up did. And now Babylon does. Session 44 comes pretty close too.  On the other hand, BD this year seems more like a collection of great parts that do not cohere into something larger.

I think this is a pretty comprehensive response to Cappy’s interrogative.

Had some Internet issues there for a bit. Some early comments.

SCV's horn line is INCREDIBLE! They are light years above anything I've heard so far tonight, both in terms of volume and overall performance.

SCV's opener has an intricate stutter step due to the tempo pattern. It's actually fun to watch.

That hornline is the schizznitt!  And they can flat blow! Can you hear that BD?

so dramatic how the last SCV - BD meetup was in Winston-Salem! Guess we'll hsve to compare scores against the bluecoats to see where they're at... how exciting.

    posted from the DrumScorps app

True. BD was the first to pop a 94, and SCV skipped over the 94's and went to a 95. I think if all goes well in Massillon...perhaps a 96.350 isn't out of the realm of possibility.

Thanks for the plug for FREE Players. Their performance in Allentown a few years back was one of “those” iconic feel good moments of drum corps. Those who follow them on Facebook know how excited they are about Indy and how hard they have worked.

I thought they were performing Friday,  it DCI has them on Thursday. Either way they will be memorable and will warm our hearts.

Really cool and great dedication. There was a companion piece back in July of 2016 stating their intentions...and now it's that time. Awesome!
