  1. I am not sure what happens next. Split? No split? I have no idea.

What I do know is that SOMETHING has to drastically change for the activity we all love to keep going. Costs are out of control, and there HAS to be some outside of the box thinking or it will soon be lights out for everyone. Not one, but SEVERAL corps folded last summer while on tour. And it's looking like it will be a challenge for the Glassmen to field a corps next year. That's not good, folks.

Since the number of corps keeps getting fewer, I imagine that in the future, drum corps will be a lot like... NASCAR. There will be a single caravan of corps traveling from show to show. There will only be enough corps for one show a night. The mighty will survive and the smaller corps without diverse revenue streams will die.

And if the corps were smart, they would travel in pairs, share housing sites, and do everything in their power to split the costs. Perhaps they could share the use of a SINGLE food truck, thereby taking a rig off the road. And instead of yet another tractor trailer for equipment, why don't they have smaller equipment trailers towed behind each bus? I imagine taking an 18 wheeler off the road will save a TON of money.

Perhaps the "big corps" are in a huge power grab. Or maybe they are working to reinvent themselves so they can simply survive (and some form of the activity can continue).

    Only time will tell.

  2. I wish there was a new rule in DCI...

Before every show, while the corps enters the field and is setting up, each corps is REQUIRED to do a warm up facing the audience. This warm up will no longer be a "pre-show" or part of the show theme for that season, but rather, a chance for the corps to warm up and engage the audience while playing their "signature song."

This warm up MUST involve playing a tune that is significant to the corps, their history, or their IDENTITY.

    The corps members will hype.

    The alumni will cry.

And the audiences will go nuts.

    Just a suggestion.

  3. After reading some of the comments here on DCP, I totally expected to hate the show, but the opposite happened...

    I friggin' LOVED it!

When I finally saw it earlier this week I had a huge smile on my face the entire time. I thought the entire show, top to bottom, was absolutely BRILLIANT and performed at an extraordinarily high level.

The 2012 Blue Devils are off the charts amazing.

    Thank you blue team!

  4. One more thing...

I just have to say that 1984 & 1999 are my two favorite Vanguard shows of all time.

That drum solo in 84? Out of this world! Later that fall I had the great fortune of performing in a clinic with SCV's pit at the PAS show in Ann Arbor and I got to hear that wonderful solo many times up close. It is an absolute masterpiece. :worthy:

Also, the Tender Land company front never fails to give me goosebumps. Every. Single. Time.

    What a great, great show.

  5. Now a lot of corps get new uniforms every couple of years - some even less. I know several are sponsored by uniform companies so the actual cost is almost "nil" but I can't help but think how the money used for this could be better spent if the uniforms were kept just a bit longer (and I realize that calling them "uniforms" as opposed to "costumes" is an entire other debate). Aren't new uniform fabrics so much easier to keep clean than before?

Anyway, after '84 when did Garfield/Cadets-of-Bergen-Country/Cadets finally get new uniforms??

We got new tops in 85 and pants in 86. I still have one of the old uniforms from 84 hanging in my closet.

  6. Another thing from '84.....how old are Garfield's uniforms?

Barbara Maroney's shako has a completely different colored chin strap as does half the corps(or is that how worn out they were?). Some of the shakos look grey.

Are the "frogs" on the wrists supposed to be white or grey?

The fact that they were champions on a shoestring budget is incredible in itself.

I can tell you that my uniform was older than I was. I think they were at least 20 years old. And when it was cleaned before finals (the only time ALL SUMMER), I couldn't tell the difference! I was so jealous that SCV had their choice of white OR green pants because our uniforms were just rags.

But the whole "shoe string budget" thing was a source of pride for all of us. We were living proof that it doesn't take money to win a championship. It's too bad that a low budget champion will probably never happen again.
