Ok, that brought a tear to my eye. That video was.....perfect. Thank you, Cadets!
Yea, it was pretty moving to watch it. I am going to miss my son's enthusiasm for camp, spring training, and the upcoming season.
@DAYGO hope your child continues with the Cadets and has a great 2024 season!- 1

Finally back home after a 14 hour drive from attending finals, as the dust settles on a whirlwind season and a total of three seasons as a DCI dad, I am filled with sadness to an ending of a era as my son aged out (my cadet is second from the top right in the picture below), relief that he is back home after being away since May, and pride at the job he. his fellow Cadets, and staff achieved this season helping bring the Cadets back to the top 5. I know some feel that there should be an asterisk due to SCV not fielding a corps, but this show was special, and they deserve all of accolades due their top 5 finish.
The season started with a lot of criticism of their show; be it the props, the brass not being large or playing as much as other shows, and we all know the uniforms were much discussed. Even with all that, the Cadets weathered the headwinds and after consistently playing from an earlier placement at most regionals, being behind two awesome corps {Mandarins (Kudos to them for their record breaking season) and Phantom Regiment (the obvious fan choice at each regional)}, they continued to add content, gradually improve, and true to the theme of their show they rose to the occasion at finals with their best run of the year to answer all of their critics.
I am very proud of all the staff, their rookie Corps Director, the BoD, the volunteers, the donors, the supportive parents, the alumni that continued to support the corps, and most importantly the marching members that gave their all for the last 3+ months to put an awesome product on the field that achieved the corps highest score since 2015. The Cadets are back where they belong. They have made me a lifelong supporter of the corps and my son an honored alumnus.
Here is to a bright future for the Cadets and their faithful fans!!FHNSAB!

My son just texted and said there is a good chance that it will be standstill tonight. Hope that's not the case....
Yea, my son said the same. He was hoping for a final competitive run before championships, but at least they only lost one competition due to the elements this season.

Just logistics. They did the same thing last year. The top 4 or so (from the previous year) performed at both shows. The rest were split between the 2 shows (ATL and NightBEAT).
That venue in ATL is a logisitcal nightmare; the Cadets could not get their food truck in the parking lot due to a crazy bump at the entrance to the lot. They had to park far away from the buses. I watched several rigs and buses attempt to clear the bump and almost get stuck in the attempt.

You must be a very proud parent!
Very much so! He might play 3rd split trumpet, but that 3rd split is just as important as 1st and 2nd. He is in the trumpet arc in the closer, so he does make me proud, since he was always apprehensive to audition for a small ensemble.

If they did that to address judge feedback, that was a smart move. For me, their visual and musical storytelling was already clear and compelling.
Yea, my son said the GE judges felt the show needed something to define its meaning, so I am guessing the VO were their answer. My son was not happy with VOs since it is such a Cadets meme.

New voice-overs don't add to the show..ughh
Their GE score went up over a point after they included it into the show.

Wow great for you both. I love the Cadets this year.
Thanks. He went from a Carolina Crown groupie to bleeding Maroon and Gold. He stuck with the Cadets even after others in his section and friends from high school went to Blue Devils, BAC, and/or Bluecoats to chase a medal for their age-out years.

Something worth considering when people complain about Cadet’s costumes and props is that they have no money - they lost sponsorships (thanks to you know who) and therefore are being smart and spending within their means which results in cost effective costumes and low cost props and given all that, they are doing an outstanding job.
I agree, they need to run lean in order to field a competitive corps. They are doing more with less and doing it at a top 5-6 level - no offense to the Regimen, Mandarins, and Cavaliers f(ph)ans the battle for 5th is great this season.

Agreed.
I took my son to the 2018 SE Championships in Atlanta. After the Cadets performed Unity Project, I told him that if he ever decided to march DCI after high school that I saw him marching Cadets. He was a Crown fan, so he kind of scoffed, but the Cadets definitely rose to perform with all of their heart and that inspired my son to audition for the Cadets in December 2019 and get contracted for the 2020 season that never happend.
He is on his 3rd tour and age-out year with Cadets, so that 2018 show and group of kids hold a special significance to me.

Oh, come on. Atlas doesn't rise...does he?
Don't tell me I've got some more research to do to understand Cadets' show? 🙄
You can almost use this show a a metaphor for the Cadets. Went from being on top (Parts 1/2), to losing almost everything (Parts 3/4), and then "Rising" from the ashes to compete again (Part 5).
Atlas = The Cadets --> Cadets Rising from 2018. Not a smooth rise for them, they have had some bumps along the way, but a rising nonetheless.

Did you see what J. Webb did to Pacific Crest in Canyon Texas? Here is a brief summary of his tape to PC.............
"Good evening Pacific Crest this is Jay Webb. I will be judging you in General Effect 2 this evening..............and as you guys are setting up for your run I hear a complete ensemble tear................this is J. Webb now signing off, and hopefully I will see you guys Semi-Finals night in Indy."
Good Grief Chief, I hope he is not a judge in Indy.....

That's a lot of work, well done! 👍
I guarantee you there are a lot of people out there and probably corps staff that will study your spreadsheet/
Thanks. San Antonio is a lot work and Prelims, but the other competitions are not too bad. My first job was data entry for insurance billing, so I am fast at keying what I see... haha

Honestly, this would be a cool project and you could like predict the outcome of prelims, semis, and finals when they announce the judge panels the week of
I do have a formula that predicts how the Cadets will do by caption, final score, and how far from the top score they will be. It has had a +/- .2 margin of error, except when J. Webb nuked their percussion score in McKinney. Tonight the my formula had them scoring a 90.87.

Bonus points if you actually track the judges names with the scores. Thats what I wish I would have done to start the year to see if the same judges were down on corps or if they shifted their scores through the season. With the Jay Webb filter on of course!
I just put an asterisk on any caption J. Webb or J. Missing are adjudicating.. haha

The thing is…. I have my own spreadsheets for drum corps score…. But they’re entirely for me 😂😂😂
I have been doing the spreadsheet thing since both my boys marched high school band, so it is second nature. Maybe I will still keep it up next year, if he still wants to see that data. I am sure he will be into Drum Corps after this season. It is his passion.

Yes, it is pretty bad that I work in excel all day at my job, then create spreadsheets for fun to track Drum Crops scoring on my off time, but it is for the kids. Ha

That's awesome! and I thought my score tracking on final scores was too much! I love this one!
Thanks, the spreadsheet has like 5 tabs of comparisons.. comparing current scores to last for all World Class Corps, a tab just comparing all of the Cadets competition results...I take it a bit overboard, but the my son and his bus look forward to the nightly updates. It is my contribution to his time on tour.

This is a spreadsheet I maintain for my son while he is on tour and Cadets, Mandarins, and Phantom are all within points of each other in all captions. The Cadets have the edge in Brass and Perc, right now, but have issues with Vis - especially with their Guard scores. GE seems to be closer than expected considering the Cadets are sort of lacking in big GE moments. Cannot wait until Saturday! So exciting.

Allentown is going to be interesting seeing all three go H2H again.
