  1. I am also having an iPad problem, and the online chat people at DCI could not help me. I downloaded the dci.org app for IPad and logged in on the account page,. I can watch free video, but when I try live streaming, I am told my device is not supported. The DCI techs told me that there is a problem, with some IPads, but at present they have no solution. I am away for the next 2 weeks and will be unable to watch several events. Has anyone come upon this problem and had any luck figuring out a solution? I am also up to date with IOS 8.4.

  2. Just home from the Lynn show. Cadets stepped it up quite a bit from Thursday night. My friends and I called it for Cadets before the scores. Crown was very good, but Cadets were just better tonight. They sold the show quite well, Not surprised they won all captions. Battery was very impressive.

  3. Someone inquired as to whether Crown was the crowd favorite. Yes, by a mile. I was there. Crown was spectacular in person tonight and definitely won the crowd. Cadets following Crown, while very good, lacked impact and got less crowd response. BD also was less impactful than Crown and got less crowed response, as well. I left after Boston, but am not surprised to hear the crowd booed Crown's placement.

  4. Just spoke to DCI a Customer Service Representative. Of course he did not have the answer to my question/issue (post in #312 above) and had to go ask the video people. Turns out that the live videos will be live and then gone for this season. In Demand will not be available until next year. I didn't ask specifically about the Archived videos, but I think this applies to them as well. Great, huh? Maybe time to flood DCI with complaints. The silver lining is I just saved $40.00.

  5. Another problem with the current lack of information: I will be attending all three days of the Championships in Indy. In past years I bought the package that included the Semis and Finals, knowing I would be able to view them when I got back home. This year, I do not know whether or not to buy the $99.00 package with the three Indy shows. If there is not a delayed removal of those shows, or the ability to access them via On Demand, it will be a complete waste of money. This lack of clear communication is so frustrating.

  6. Take a look at the source music. It's meant to be repetitive.

Doesn't mean I have to like it. I liked "Short Ride" when Cadets played it in 1991 and When Santa Clara played it in 2001. I just don't warm to this particular piece of music. It's all personal preference, that's all.

  7. After seeing the bluecoats live in Lawrence, count me among those not experiencing them as the best thing since sliced bread. I find the music up until the ballad repetitive and a bit off-putting. The ballad, however, is lovely, my favorite part of the show. I do like the last number because it reminds me of Carolina Crown’s In.Trance.It from 2006. A lot of time is spent by the guard and horn line moving the triangles around, and this gets uninteresting to me pretty quickly. And the climbing up on and posing on the triangles in various configurations also gets repetitive to me. They are doing a great job in performing and they sound great, but I am not impacted as I have been by some other recent shows. Crown 2012 comes to mind.

  8. I attended Boston’s standstill performance at Post Office Square in Boston tonight, and I’m glad I did. The Crusaders were very generous with their time and music, playing for a full hour. Plus those of us who arrived early were able to hear an additional half hour of warm-ups. The new uniforms look elegant and should work well on the field. The brass sounded great and was very competent in all sections, with the lower voices particularly impressive. The battery sounded clean and the pit was playing a lot of notes very well. I am not a brass or percussion expert, so I cannot comment on the difficulty of what was being played, but the brass book sounded plenty difficult. They opened up with their parade tune, IIRC, from A Few Good Men, and then played their 2012 opener, The Titans, followed by a Dropkick Murphys tune and Conquest. Then they played the full show and the corps song Giant. They finished out the performance by repeating the entire 2014 show, Giant and the Dropkick Murphys tune. How about that!

I have not been a fan of the Crusaders’ musical choices and programming efforts the last several years, but this year they surprised me in a good way. The show is in six sections, and the music, it was explained, is primarily Russian orchestral music. I did not recognize any of the orchestral music. However, quotes of more familiar music are mixed in, including Old McDonald, Oh My Darlin’ Clementine and Meadowlands. The show also includes a long quote from Conquest. However, it is a quite different version. If you like how The Cadets played Doxology in 2011,you will like this version of Conquest. There was no request for secrecy, so I assume it is fine to mention these titles. There was also no inclusion or mention of narration.

IMHO the Crusaders have achieved a new level of sophistication and organic flow with this show. I was impressed. It is a dark show, but it is not dreary. It is very percussive and there are a lot of changes in tempo and volume and a lovely ballad they are calling The Boxer, after a character in Animal Farm. The show holds together very well. It is also accessible to the untrained ear (like mine). Depending on the visual, it should sell well, and I think the judges will warm to it. This could be the best Boston Crusaders yet.

  9. While I agree with much of Lee’s article, I do take issue with a couple of conclusions, which seem to have become part of current drum corps conventional wisdom. First, not all corps have similar uniforms. Just compare Crown’s uniforms to those of the Blue Devils. Crown’s are tight fitting, top to bottom. BD’s are looser with lots of paraphernalia on them. Shakos couldn’t be more different. Second, I do not believe all corps sound the same. Once again, compare Crown to BD. Totally different sound. SCV, Cadets—each also produces a different sound, neither like those of Crown or BD. One thing I strongly agree with, however, is the idea of the folly of difficulty for difficulty’s sake. So much of what is difficult and rewarded by the judges does not even get communicated to the stands. Also, maybe the increase in difficulty owes as much to George Zingali as it does to Hopkins. GZ invented the drill that could not be perfected, but he perfected it. On the whole a thoughtful and enjoyable article.
