How is the quality this year? Do they get the amped stuff ok? Just wondering if it is worth getting these prelims downloads, or waiting for the Finals ones (if they ever release those). Or wait for the CD's?
The sound quality (on the Lossless) is quite good. All of the amped stuff is in there and clean and not too loud.

FYI - They have fixed the lossless prelims and added Cascades. Props to DCI support, who answered my email very quickly and fixed this.
-
Update... they now have a ZIP file available to download the entire bundle at once (rather than clicking 21 links and waiting for 4GB to download 200MB at a time). HOWEVER, after two 4 Gig downloads, there is apparently a problem with the file. I won't delete it until I talk to support, but I can't extract it. Bad news.
-
Hi,
Did you receive Cascades lossless performance in your bundle? Its not listed
Hmmm. No, it does not. That is upsetting.

Picked up the Lossless Prelims bundle today. Listening to Blue Devils right now. A couple of thoughts:
A. The files are BIG .wav files. For example, BD is 212MB. The full bundle is a whopping 4.3GB. I thought that they would be .flac files, but they are .wav (which means they will more than likely play on any device without additional software)
2. Sound is very clear so far. So much so that I noticed that the field mic on the Bari solo at the beginning of La Strada was having issues. Balance between brass and pit (and mic'd parts) is very good. As has been the case in the past, the crowd and announcer are a bit subdued, most likely due to mic placement.
D. Volume is a bit low, but I am listening on a work PC with crap earbuds. I will give these a run through the car stereo (via bluetooth) later and get a better feel for the sound.
Edit to add: ####, Blue Devils Mellos! (I know that I have expressed this before, but WOW are they loud, especially in the opener and closer))

Speaking only for myself, absolutely. It's already there for me, settled dust or not. Simply a fabulous all around production in a year of VERY good shows. Loved it!

Not for nothing, but if you enjoy the original version, you should check out Vienna Teng on Spotify (or your music provider of choice). If you dig her stuff, consider buying something. It can't hurt for our community to show some financial love to the folks who graciously allow our groups to play their stuff, especially when they are smaller acts. I know that I will probably buy her album Aims (the one with Hymn), mainly because I enjoy this style of music. A bit different from what you hear on the radio, which is right up my alley.

I was wondering the same thing. In years past, the Prelims were out pretty quickly (within days of Finals). I realize the crew is probably busy, but this is the time to get the recordings, before all of the copyright claims chop up the shows...

SCV trombone skull splitting first hit.
Bloo pitch bend.
Cadets stage.
Boston's G7 and baby powder at finals.
Ill remember all of these moments.
Wait, what? What did they do with baby powder at finals? (I missed this?)
-
I was surprised that they left the white tarps under the various field percussion bits. I would have bet you dollars to donuts that those would have been done up to look like Planets for Finals week.

They have also ended the ability to review the Finals PPV already. Last year, you could watch through Wednesday or Thursday I believe...this year, the FAQ said it would remain available until "Saturday". I think most anyone with common sense would assume this meant the next Saturday, since finals was on a Saturday. I had planned to watch the multi-cam performance today, but NO GO.
I don't know about you, but when I go to the Fan Network, then On Demand, I can view the Finals shows (even though I should not be able to... didn't buy the package).
Also, the video of the awards ceremony works just fine for me (it was marked as private at one point yesterday).

Perspective - In the summer of 2007:
- This year's age-outs were getting ready to start High School.
- George W Bush was president (with over a year to go on his second term)
- The Xbox 360 had only been out two years, the PS3 only one
- The original iPhone was released
All of this happened the last summer that didn't end with a Blue Devils color guard victory.

I loved those mid-late 80's Suncoast shows. What was the year they had a late start to the season and incredibly made finals? 89?
Yep, it was 89.

Think of all the plumes that have been shaken apart by stiff legged back-up techniques in the past. We must remember the plumes.

My only beef with Carpe Noctem is that there does not exist a decent recording of it. Loved that show.

Is yap-yap-yap now a key on your keyboard? :-p
HA! I was thinking he had programmed a macro, or set Autocomplete...

What happened in 1988? Did I miss retreat that night?
Oh, it was nothing major, and not at retreat. I saw a member of the hornline after retreat (in the lot) and congratulated him on winning brass. He basically told me to f off because, I guess, they didn't win. Not the whole organization, by far, but one guy... made an impression. Also, I have been a huge BD fan since 84, this was one of the first times I had actually interacted with anyone from the corps. I was young and I guess a little disappointed. Like I said though, not the whole org by far, and ancient history.
-
So BD are onto something with shows about film directors. Looking forward to a Michael Bay tribute next year!
Nah, that won't happen until DCI allows pyrotechnics... ;P

Who said I'm bagging on BD? I freaking love BD. This is merely a critique on the ridiculousness that is DCI judging. After all, it's the judging that determines the future of DCI.
Dude, you called out "park and blow". I am not one to take a timer to shows, but I would bet you dollars for donuts that both of the (AWESOME) Blues had about the same amount of "park and blow" this year. They ALSO both had some amazing moving while playing bits... around stationary stuff (which, despite popular opinion) is hard to do (because if someone screws up in placing aforementioned stationary objects, things get interesting, quick).

I don't feel I'm being "whiny" at all. I have had experience with beating BD in the past, and they were negative all 3 years I marched. If that has changed with BD I would love to hear it and welcome it, but from my personal experience, and the attacks and names I was called in retreat block, that is what I remember so that is what I put with BD when they do not win. I have two titles and a silver, why should I feel the need to whine?
Fair enough... but I know that even back in the day, your team (your direct team.. the pit) would talk all sorts of ####. "Wait Till Tomorrow" (1986) or, even better, at the Canton show in 88 when your boys played "Mary Had A Little Lamb" to our pit when they were setting up... only to have our kids rock out to Firebird (which they won I&E with that year).
It's all gamesmanship. You were a part of some awesome Cavies shows. Maybe Devs didn't show you love, but I have witnessed them being good sports (1996, 2013) more than not (1988)

Perhaps relevant, maybe not. A few years ago, at the DCA Minicorps (yes, I know, different organizations, sue me) the Ghost Riders laid down an amazing show. Got something on the order of a 98. Then Star United came out and rocked the house... scored a 100. Yes, a "perfect" score. Many members of Ghost Riders said that the only reason that Star didn't score a 105 was because the numbers stop at 100. Was Star perfect? Nope. Were they that much better than an (amazing) Ghost Riders corps? Yep. It's relative, not perfection. I have not seen tonight's shows, but what I have seen (Allentown, prelims, and semis) leads me to believe that tonight's scores are legit.
(Edited to add a missing "n")

First off, Congrats to BD. You should have won, no doubt. 99.65? Don't think it should have been near that high but that's my opinion. Those of you saying how classy it was that BD congratulated Bluecoats? It was, but I can tell you from experience that had the shoe been on the other foot and BD lost it would not have happened.
Wrong. They were also hugging and congratulating Crown last year at finals. Not going to look for it now, but there was a widely disseminated photo of the BD and Crown drum majors hugging it out.

Park and Blow scores a perfect GE and Viz. Congrats DCI. Way to send a message. As to the real Viz corps like SCV and Crown, you guys keep doing what you're doing. And the real GE winner, BLOO, how they can ignore an entire stadium of DCI players and fans, well, let's just say we all saw the same thing. BD, congrats on a great show and an amazing hornline.
Dude, really? Your corps just beat a ten time champion, got their highest score and placement ever, and you have to bag on the corps that won? Come on now. Enjoy the fact that Blooo won the hearts of pretty much everyone this year and don't be upset. Bloo was never going to beat Blue this year, sorry. I am VERY happy that Bloo got Silver, but they had plenty of park (or hang on triangles) bits as well.
Enjoy the highs. Your corps was AWESOME this year. So were the Blue Devils.

I just got back upstairs from watching the BD victory run, right on the 50. It was amazing! Congratulations to the Blue Devils organization for winning literally EVERY contest they participated in during DCI week.
Congratulations to the Bluecoats for their best competitive finish in the history of the corps as well as the best score ever.
An amazing season. I can't believe how awesome it was.
I have to pack up. They're turning off the lights and BD is still cleaning up the field. I'll see you next in Rochester, New York, for the 2014 Drum Corps Associates World Championships!
Thanks, as always, for your coverage Kevin. Enjoy DCA finals!

Will BD 2014 go down as one of the greats?

For what it's worth...
I have already listened to this show many times more than I have any other show from this decade (2010 - now). I just love it from a musical standpoint, even if the recording I have is Prelims. Regarding comparing it to the previous record scores, I absolutely love Cadets 2005, but like this show more. I have never been a fan of Frameworks (I know, I know, crucify me) so that is a no-brainer. There are other shows in the pantheon of all time classics that I either witnessed live or cut my teeth on, but this one will go down in history as one of my favorites, if not my favorite, for now.
