  1. Maybe if the Cadets fans who feel some sort of persecution complex would just ignore the negative posts, rather than whining and responding like a child, people would not be so negative...

Seriously, most people, even the critics here, have stated over and over again that they like a lot of the show, or at least that they appreciate the difficulty and execution in the show. Some of the critics, especially of the latest additions, are former marching members. Finally, this year's show is not getting a fraction of the negativity that other Cadets offerings (and many, many Blue Devils offerings) have gotten in recent years.

TL;DR - Get a thicker skin. Your corps chooses to be innovative and do things their own way, people are going to criticize. I am sure that the kids are being well taken care of, learning to perform at the highest level, maxing out their show, and having a blast (like any kid who marches Cadets).

  2. The Cadets drum major, think her name is Kendall, is great! All drum majors are but she stands out this year for me as a really good one with a lot respect from her corps.

Agreed! Additionally, BD's DM is pretty rockin as well. I love the fact that the podium is no longer a "boys club".

(Honestly, not trying to get political or anything, I just really dig seeing young ladies rocking the podium).

  3. Hoping this is Bloo's year! They've got a great, entertaining show and the crowd would go absolutely berzerk if they won. Devils win and the crowd sits on its hands once again. GO BLOO!!

Don't know about that... Allentown is not generally known as being friendly to BD, and the crowd went nuts Friday night for their show. I realize that they have not been a crowd favorite in recent years (and aren't this year, those honors go to Bloo and Crown) but they are VERY entertaining and VERY good this year. The crowd will go berserk regardless of how Bloo finishes, LOVE that show!

  4. I was pretty much in the same location, just maybe higher up. Awesome, just awesome. I also videotaped it on my ipad (but didn't upload to YouTube). I am wondering if I should say anything to my brother and friend that are coming with me and show them the clip, or just let them naturally react. My only concern is that our seats aren't very central, so I wonder if the effect will be as strong. We will get to see the guy jump off the ramp right in front of us though!

Well, we were in row 21, between the 10 and 15, and it was pretty strong. Not as loud (on the synth) as if we were in the middle, but the horns had very nice impact.

  5. Anecdote: I watched BD rehearse during finals week wayyyy back in 2003. They were to the point where the staff were singling out individual members for being sharp/flat on individual notes. Not lying, this happened. Also, being out of form for a count or two during a move. I am sure they are still as precise with their instruction now.

Similarly, I watched part of Crown's rehearsal on Saturday and saw a lot of the same types of things, although there is still a long way to go visually. Specifically, while working on the ballad the first mello soloist came in a bit flat compared to the synth intro, and at one point the second trumpets were not carrying a crescendo through a three half note phrase. It's amazing the level of detail the top corps can focus on.

  6. By saying that they aren't "BD" clean, I translate that that you are indicating that they are sub par... and this makes no sense at all.

I don't think that's what John is saying at all. I saw them live Friday in Allentown, and while they are amazing, there are still some spots where forms are not perfect. Some of the block drill does not have perfect straight lines, especially when you are viewing from an angle (say, the 25 yd line vs the 50). If and when those last few forms get clean, they will be "BD Clean".

For a reference, check out the rotating box drill at the beginning of the 97 show. The block was so clean that the shadows cast by the stadium lights were a virtually perfect crosshatch of the box.

John is not bagging on BD, or calling them sub-par. He is simply stating that they are not (yet) at the level that most consider Finals-worthy BD Clean.

  7. There was a comment out here about how Crown tied with Madison in Brass. Another person responded by saying something snide, like "so, the judges agree with all of us who thought Crown was "off" tonight"...What an insulting remark. And whoever made that remark obviously isn't very informed. I'm so sick and tired of Madison being overlooked and slammed this season. Their brass line is amazing. Go Madison. I hope your members are not listening to all of these negative remarks. And everyone is slamming their show design this season. Well...the members should not be penalized by all this negativity because of show design. If you ask me, there are a number of corps in higher standing whose shows have much worse show design. I hope Scouts turn it up in Indianapolis and prove all of you negative people wrong. And by the way...I understand that something went wrong at the end of their show last night in Allentown...I'm not sure what. But if it hadn't been for some mistake, they would have probably scored a lot higher.

Wait a second... in one breath you are going to say that it's insulting that people thought that Crown was "off" because they tied Madison, yet you are fine with saying that "there are a number of corps in higher standing whose shows have much worse show design"?

Pick one, and stick with it. Be upset at the perceived slight, or choose to slam corps that are beating your team. Don't do both.

By the way, I thought Madison was amazing last night (I was there, live) and not nearly as bad as some of your fellow alumni have claimed. They are also scoring (overall) pretty much right where they should be.

  8. I'm down with you on that one. Love me some 'coats, but they aren't in Cadets ballpark visually. Well, individual and ensemble at least.

Agreed. Bloo is probably my favorite show this year (VERY close to BD). That said, BD, Cadets, Crown and SCV have technically more challenging shows (IMO, brass and drill, I know nothing of guard or perc difficulty). Bloo is performing the hell out of their show though, and are deserving of their placement. Cadets, while technically proficient and clean as a whistle don't hit me in "the feels" as the kids would say, so I think they are missing something in GE. Also, they really don't have many "Cadets" moments this year. Bloo is also not nearly as clean visually as BD, Cadets and SCV.

Superr00k, relax, not slamming your boys. I would love to see them move up to second, but just calling it like I see it.

(Edit to remove silliness, which you can see in quoted post below0

  9. Put BD in cream pants

George, I really respect you, and you have been VERY fair and objective this year, but BD, with their simply flawless technique would look just fine if you put them in neon green pants with LED light stripes down each leg. Cadets may hit their forms better, but there is simply no corps with better foot technique than BD. With all due respect. (And Cadets are very, very good too.)

  10. Does anyone know why the Allentown show is two nights and split up like that? It seems like it would make more sense just to start early on Saturday and do all 22 corps that day. One less day or renting the stadium seems like it would save quite a bit of money. I have never really seen this discussed anywhere before, so I am sorry if I missed the discussion. I could understand if they did it on two consecutive weeknights, but being on the weekend just doesn't make much sense to split it up
