  1. When I marched Pio, we changed from khaki pants to black ones mid-season, and I think the change helped our look a little bit. I remember commenting, and having a lot of people agree with me, that "they made our sash", which at the time was a white sash with orange stripe borders and a silver "belt buckle" (very similar to what Kilties will be using this season) "actually look good"

And I agree with Mike about not being too thrilled about the "Roman" hats.

Matt, I could have fallen on my sword when they unveiled those things in Cedarburg last year. The "roman" hat has to go.

    You have a sword....??

    I'm jealous.

  2. Very cool to see so many names from 97 that are on this board!

So true! Back then, I'd just started posting on RAMD. It seems to me that RAMD was then what DCP is now: highly opinionated people who can avoid resorting to personal attacks . . . well, most of the time. :P

Too true... I can't remember if I started posting there in 96 or 97, but I think it was 97. I remember some characters there, for sure! It was an interesting voyage down memory lane, remembering those names and emails.....

Ahhh, age, isn't it wonderful? LOL!

  3. Let's see... 2 guys (Troy Moon and Juan Jimenez) who I marched Suncoast 88 with (and went to FSU with) were in my wedding in 2002, one as best man. I still see many folks from back in the day whenever there is an Orlando show. Rich Napolitano (87,89) was at my wedding as well. Last year at finals in Orlando, I stayed up until well after 4 am Saturday in a room with several old "Coasters" ... good times.

BTW, this quote from Byline (Sue) :

"Actually, I looked up the thread on Google."

Led me to google RAMD for some stuff... happened upon a thread where someone blasted the 88 Suncoast show, which led to a HUGE post from me in our defense (remarkably, not too antagonistic!), which THEN led to a very cool supporting post from... none other than SUE!!!

Very cool to see so many names from 97 that are on this board!

BTW, if anyone's interested in the thread... here it is...

Biggest Screw Job in DCI History (That's the name of the thread... some entertaining stuff there....

  4. Well, the thing I remember the most from Madison 87 was from semifinals rather than finals....

We (Suncoast) went on right after Madison (gulp). As we lined up behind Camp Randall, I could only see a tiny corner of the left-side upper deck, which was full. When the Scouts hit the company front in Star Spangled Banner, that little corner went absolutely nuts, and I thought to myself "We have to go on after that?"

  5. This is directed to OLD Time Drummer.

The Freelaners made finals quite a few times and had been around quite a long time before they finally went inactive for good.  Their highest placement was 7th place and that is not too shabby.  I do not think they belong on your list.  It is not as if they just came and went in a few years.

This is just my humble, and I am sure biased opinion.

I absolutely agree with you and I would make the same comment about Suncoast.

Both good points about Freelancers and Suncoast. I stand corrected.

Actually, having marched Suncoast, I would agree that there is a bit of truth here. Suncoast enjoyed a rocket-like ascent up the DCI placement ladder, peaked at 5th and had a ton of promise when poor fiscal management (sound familiar?) took its toll and seriously hampered the corps in its last three (relatively) competitive seasons. Had the corps made better use of their corporate sponsorship in 1986, who knows how far that corps could have gone.

Certainly not a one-hit wonder, but definitely gone before they wore out their welcome, IMHO.

  6. Some non-championship type of shows that I liked...

Drums Along the Mohawk, in Rome, NY (I think) ... great community there, banners over the streets, etc

    Nightbeat in Charlotte

Any show at the "Glass Bowl" in Toledo!

Agreed with earlier post about the Lynn Bowl in Malden, Mass.

And of course Allentown, if only for the ramp from he ll coming off the field.

  7. Well, for the years that I was with Suncoast, it would have been:

    SCV 87

    BD 88

    PR 89

Three of my favorite shows all time (with SCV 87 being my favorite OTL EVER!)

If I could go back in time, I would have "stayed home" to march Suncoast 83 (slammin' into finals at 5th), 84 (who wouldn't want to have marched the Vietnam show) and 85 (the Original Florida Suite show).

  8. oldtimedrummer--you made me remember some mid-70's to early-80's drum line

    old school recollections!!

    remember??

That era's "atypical" drum line member, e.g.

--74 Phantom Regiment concert snare in the marching snare line

--75 27th Lancer Chime player (lost the mallet one time and played with his

    knuckles)

-- timbale/bongo player (79 Blue Stars we called this guy the "drum plug")

cymbals with a "spinner" instead of a strap?

snares with a strap so they were canted (with Frank Arsenault "high sticking")?

76 Blue Devils with the "UFO" triple tenors?

    77 Spirit of Atlanta quintoms??

    78 Seneca Optimist conga/bongo lines??

Here's a question for the rest of you non-drumming types..................................

Having been a bass drummer for the Cavaliers, I got to play that walking beat off the field. It's actual title is "Iowa". Did you have a "name" for that beat?? The best alternate title I have ever heard was "Sneakers in a Dryer!!!"

Also one more question for the "non-p.c." fans...................................................

One of the most hilarious parts of marching drum corps was the nicknames that you gave to other corps. Would you mind listing some of your favorites?? Here's some of mine:

Santa Clara was always known as "Christmas Tree"

    Bridgemen were "The Bananas"

Madison was called "The Masculine Scouts" or "The Dancing Bears"

    Phantom Regiment..................."Random Sediment"

    Blue Stars..............................."Blisters" "Blah Stars"

    Cavaliers................................."Cavities" "Can of Beers"

    Racine Kilties............................"Obscene Filthies"

Spirit of Atlanta........................."Sperm of a Llama"

go on, you know you want to list them, and you know it's all in jest...............

    Heh....

    Spewie inside Santa (Spirit)

    Scar on my Banana (Star)

    SpewCoats (Bluecoats)

Just off the top o' my head.

  9. 2) Garfield Cadets: Elk's Parade (1981)

    8) Suncoast Sound: Time Out (1983)

    14) Madison Scouts: Waltz of the Mushroom Hunters (1984)

    15) Phantom Regiment: Claire de Lune (1994)

    29) Blue Devils: Dindi (1981)

    31) Freelancers: With You I'm Born Again (1984)

    39) Florida Wave: Fool On The Hill (1987)

Great calls Chuck, no argument from me, but I would add...

Canzona - Cavies 86 Opener - In your face from the first note, and the build to the end is pure energy

Overture from Colas Breugnon - Madison 83 Opener - VERY cool! (and goes right into my personal favorite version of Strawberry Soup)

Niner-Two - 27 1982 Production - I've heard it from other corps since, but this is still my favorite

Blues in the Night - 1984 Spirit Production - One word - Hunter

Vide cor Meum - Cadets 2001 Ballad - Just gives me chills

That's all for now, but I am sure there are many more...

  10. i played bass 2 laster in Empire now im rockin it out wiht my boys on 4. rock on bass chicks!!!!!!!!

ehh heem......that should be ....men!!! thank you ... b**bs

Heh... funny. We are all calling the ladies 'chicks' throughout the thread, then we get a bit uppity when one of them calls us a 'boy'!

    Just funny, to me... B)

  11. Ok, so I have always thought that Suncoast may have had the highest debut in the top 12 when they earned 5th at DCI Prelims in 1983. Mainly because I am curious, and partly because I am lazy, does anyone know if any other corps finished as high or higher in their first year in finals?

Oakland Crusaders left prelims in 1975 in fourth place.

    regards,

    John Swartz

Wow, in their first year, no less. I understand that they formed out of a merger, but still, that's nice!

  12. I haven't seen a single reference to a senior corps closer.

if ya look at the title of this category, it might explain why no Senior Corps are mentioned...... :;'

Uhhh, what part? Historical, Drum Corps, or Discussion?

    ;P

General Junior Drum Corps Discussion is the main "forum category" :music:

    Touche - I stand corrected.....

(See, try and be a smart@ss before completion of coffee = failure!)

    :music:

  13. Gotta add mine, surprised he is not mentioned...

Frank T. Williams. He scared me into not sucking. You just wanted to kick A@@ for this guy. If you have met him... you know. He worked magic with the Suncoast brasslines of the 80s, then moved on to Cadets and is now with Glassmen. A great brass teacher.

  14. Music of the Night SCV 1988 (the year they brought magic to the field) :)

Getting into this discussion a little late...

SCV did Magic before 88. They made a girl "levitate" in 87 (still trying to figure that one out).

Actually, the levitating girl was 86. In 87 they made two girls "appear from nowhere" from under a cloth. Pretty cool stuff...

Of course, we can't forget the magical changing pants in the tunnel from both 85 and 86.
