I didn't think scores would go up much at this show. I think the placements were mostly as I saw them. Some of the spreads in various captions and sub captions were interesting, but given we are beginning to see new endings I don't think this is that odd. Boston being .6 behind Carolina in brass is likely a bad call by the judge, but hey...I was not there so I will leave that alone. I doubt that is the case again.

Visually lots of new stuff going into these shows. Boston with some new stuff at the end. BD brought their new ending the other day but have some work to clean that, and there could be more. Carolina changed some music and changed some of their visual program, especially with the middle section props being out. Not sure if that is for good or not. The Cadets with a new ending that I think can be really effective when cleaned. Once these new ending and other new material come into play scoring will always stagnate or take a step back. The key is this: will the payoff take the corps visual and musical program to new heights? Especially in GE.

Overall great show! Hard to not like all these shows.

Totally agree. All these shows are fantastic!

I know you aren't asking me, but I was not a fan of Babylon. I do though think they deserved to win.

I didn’t care for that show either. I thought it was boring and I think I am in the minority on this. But that mello line was cooking at the end. The show had some type of energy to it that most people picked up on (which was completely lost to me). Am I sad it won? Nope. Do I think it should have won? Yep, the judges make that decision, not me.

Since nobody is reading my reasoning, I will have to say it again. BD is like the theatre that only does Mamet or Durang. Those show are brilliant pieces of art that take talent and genius to perform, but they are not for the masses. The judges are looking at the art and rewarding it like Academy judges do for high brow movies. But people for the most part dont love the movies for those art films. they dont spend money on those films.

You also cannot compare BD to the Cavies and Cadet of the 00's BD has won 40% of EVERY championship ever and 60% of the championships in the past 15 years. Its been over 20 years since they finished lower than 2nd. Its is different kind of dominance.

People have read your reasoning. There are people who don’t agree with your reasoning.

It’s not a requirement that every show has to be for everyone. It’s completely fine that the masses don’t go to see a movie that delivers something other than immediate adrenaline. It’s fine to aspire to something other than mass adulation. There is so much out there for those who like that kind of stuff, just as there is in the drum corps arena. Enjoy what the other corps are doing and let BD be extraordinary as well.

I completely agree with this.  I feel that is the responsibility of a champion to try new things and break new ground - I think BD did that to get into their modern era of championships but have stuck with a formula (give or take) and where there was a 'weakness' (e.g. losing guard to Boston), they have followed what the winner was doing (e.g. more tricks and harder work in the context of guard).

But when was the last time we saw something truly innovative from them?

2022, when the whole corps performed lengthy choreography to spoken word…hadn’t seen that before in drum corps. And Bluecoats appears to follow that lead in their 2023 production.

Also in 2022, where they did a large rotating line and then they drew a perpendicular rotating line out of the center of the first line. I hadn’t seen that happen before, but maybe they did that back in 1970s and I haven’t seen it.

Go back and read what I said about the Oscars. If the heady art film is going to win best picture every year, that is not going to inspire people to go to the movies.

The alleged goal of the Oscars is to reward what the judges think are the highest achievement in the given categories, not to kowtow to the masses who return in droves to see “Fast and the Furious 38: This Time They’re Even Quicker and Whoah Boy Are They Ticked Off!”

  6. The more I watch that new BD closer, the more I’m impressed by its difficulty. That star shows up out of nowhere and then later on they do super-quick form manipulations and then they reform the star but with different people at different positions. I find that pretty cool. When they clean it and gain more confidence with it, look out!

    Fantastic job, BD! Well done!

Hey if you cant remember what year you're in you have more problems than it being left off. Also, I was nice to add a date at someone else's request and it matches my previous show title. To top it all off, funny show titles were a thing 10 years ago so this  whole "this year" thing is wrong. And if we want to complain about anything else burger doesn't have a - in it.

Yeah I know everybody else loves this, I just felt like grumping out for a second. I’ll get over it.

Meanwhile I thought of a solution that works for me. When I get a chance I’m going to create a post that has all the threads, outlined with a consistent date format and then bookmark it for those who like to go back to peruse the threads and will be hindered otherwise by the search feature and cutesy titles.

The thread title is created by whomever gets to create it before anyone else.  You’re free to create one if you’d like.  Then someone like you can complain about it!

We already are aware of the year and why 2-3 years from now would we go back to it?

    Jeez, finish your coffee.

I gave my reason why I like to go back already. Also I don’t drink coffee so…so there! 🤪

Speaking of organic, one of my favorite moments from the show is the drum break / guard-brass rhombus. They're moving to the spoken rhythm of the famed war time speech by Charles De Gaulle, which affected a despondent Matisse during WWII when the morale of the French peoples was very low after the Nazi encroachment.

I love this part so much, especially the different representations of what I think are the soldiers marching into the main form from stage left.

Thank you for providing the speech!
