I wasn't at my computer reading comments earlier in the show so I might have missed this.  I'm curious what your opinion is on the Cadets new ending.

I'm a huge fan of Cadets this season and my mom said if you can't say anything nice don't say anything at all, so I won't out of respect.  I  will say I was a huge fan of the drill in the original ending.

You're a Cadets alumnus so please feel free to ignore this question if it puts you in an awkward position.

You aren’t asking me, but I’ll give my opinion anyway.  Based solely on the multicam broadcast, which wasn’t very good during the Cadets new ending.  I thought it was DIRTY, which made it difficult to read.  However, I think there’s more going on than there was with the old drill, and therefore the potential is higher now.

I agree, I really liked the old drill, and I really figured they were just going to add to to that.  Instead, they went and made big changes!  It was surprising!

I do really like the guard member claiming the “steps” at the very end.  I think that is super effective!

Looking forward to seeing more.  I’m starting to anticipate Allentown as a really emotional and awesome performance from them next weekend, as usual.  I’m glad they put the changes on the field last night, and didn’t wait any longer!

Yeah, here’s the thing I have observed about Bloo … you either get it or you don’t, but people who don’t get it can be very vocal.

I would also say, even if you don’t get it, you have to be OK with not getting it.  Sometimes I watch them, and I think, “I have no idea what this is or what they are doing, AND I FREAKING LOVE IT!!!”

My issue with this show is that the mythology surrounding Atlas is incredible. The story of Atlas holding up the weight of the world as punishment has incredible depth and there are so many ways it could have been explored.

Instead, we get this shallow and seemingly low effort design that does this top 5 ensemble a disservice.

I do not agree about this being a low-effort design.  However, I think their chosen name for the show, “Atlas Rising”, was perhaps not very well thought out.  This name certainly implies some very literal motifs, but yet the staff admit they were not going for this type of theme in literal sense.

The idea that design choices in a show should always make sense has been proven wrong many times.  And I personally prefer shows that are more non-literal.  This brass and this percussion are great, and I kinda wish they were just playing and marching and dancing to show off their growth and emotion, WITHOUT any theme at all this year.

This Atlas Rising theme is not only unnecessary, but it’s actually causing people to try and find literal meaning where there is none.  It doesn’t really bother me, but I can understand how it bothers other people.  I am choosing to overlook it, and just pay attention to their performance and emotion.  Looks like the score improved tonight, if scores are what matters.  Let’s keep it going!!

I still believe they can finish as high as 5th, depending entirely on their performance!

The ballad in general is divine. Don’t hurt me too much but it reminds so much of the style of ballads that BD has been doing since 2017. Soloists kicking the melody off, lush front ensemble features helping things build up, a moment of silence, and then a commanding final statement by the hornline in one big block with body movement. All while letting the musical piece grow and breathe throughout

There are lots of similarities between BD and Coats these days.  I think they’re actually learning from each other.  They are definitely pushing each other.  And they respect each other.  Very cool to see!

All of “The Garden” for them last year was incredibly cool and wholly on them to fill in the space between the pj’s uniform change, and of course the build up of the whole rest of that part of their show, that’s what probably pushed them over the top in percussion imo for me👀

They also had some unreal PERFORMERS in the front ensemble last year.  I could watch that group for hours without getting tired of it!  And I agree with the section of the show from last year you are referring to.  The front ensemble was totally exposed for a LONG period of time.  At first, I thought it might be TOO long.  But they stayed committed to it, and the payoff at the end of the year was undeniable.

That's not the point. Cadets pride themselves on looking good. These are literally gym clothes. They may as well wear what they wear in rehearsals. I get the "athleticism" concept of the show, but these clothes are not symbolic of Cadets' mantra.

I agree with you, and totally respect your experience, and I get what you’re saying.  Yeah, these uniforms are different, and I’m also staying open minded.  Perhaps there’s more they’re going to do with these uniforms that will add to the effect?  I still say I liked them when they were unveiled.  The video used to unveil them was very professionally produced, and that definitely made a difference in swaying my opinion.

Would I like to see them march their show with their traditional uniforms?  YES.  I actually believe the arguments against the traditional ones are bogus.  We’ve all seen them perform super-human maneuvers with the old wool uniforms.  And now there are new fabrics which stretch, and you can still use a traditional style uniform.  It’s possible.  I do miss the days where the brass/percussion wore regular uniforms, and the guard wore something to match the show theme (like the Cadets way back in 1992/1993).

I’m still somewhat resentful of when SCV started really ditching their traditional appearance in 2017, and then it got even worse after that.  But I’ve grown to love those shows, and I can now appreciate what they were trying to do, and I can look past it.

Cadets have tried so many things with uniforms since they went all black at the end of 2015 (which I truly HATED).  I guess I’m looking at this year as something to stir a bit of controversy, and maybe that’s a good thing?  Let’s see!

Maybe it's me but do the Cadets props always have to look:soapbox: so cheap? These props appear straight from Home Depot.

And after seeing them in Ma. last night, the uniforms/costumes look like they were purchased at Walmart for under $10 !

You guys need to stop worrying.  It will be fine!  Actually, more than fine!!  🙂

  8. The Cadets traditional uniform is THE BEST uniform of all time.  Part of the beauty of it, for me, was seeing them march onto the field in a block in that uniform, and then watching them go absolutely crazy with drill that you would swear was not even possible.

That being said, this year’s uniform seems appropriate, and I actually liked it a lot as soon as I saw it!  If you are going to change, there’s no sense in being conservative about it.  And there’s a leg stripe!!

  9. I’m actually glad there was no Cadets thread for a while.  Taking some time to let emotions calm down, and considering all aspects of where things are, I’m looking forward to see where this goes.   Especially anxious to find out about the 2023 program!  There are quite a few positives, for sure.

It just might be differences on how to proceed in the future of the Cadets. I haven't heard anything that Tom A did other than be strict about being on time for practice. But she's in charge and can fire and hire her staff.

Nope.  The problem is, she fired TA, didn’t announce anything, and doesn’t have a replacement nailed down either.  If it was all planned this way on purpose, DB should be fired HERSELF for having such a poor plan.

  11. Denise Bonfiglio is not the worst thing to ever happen to the Cadets.  Not by a long shot.

But she does seem to have too much of a superiority complex.

This is a team sport.  She takes way too much credit for success that comes from the members themselves, and the design and instructional team.

Is she driving people away?  I’ve seen this movie before.  I don’t want to see it again.

Oh well I had a nice dinner while the webcast was on Saturday. Lower Allen Diner and they didn’t care we hung out in the booth until closing time.
Even had a booth where we couldn’t see the “dueling TV sets” (one has Fox and other has CNN). At least the sound is off.

Lower Allen Diner is close enough for me to walk to!  Good stuff!
