It is not too late to join us as we present "American Roots". We are still accepting members in all the Brass sections. We rehearse in the Princeton, NJ area. Our next camp is on March 10-11 at the Princeton Day School, 650 Great Road, Princeton, NJ 08540, from 9 am on the 10th until 4 pm. on the 11th. If you are looking for somewhere to march this summer, come join us this coming weekend.

  2. E-Hem.......I hope you're not implying what I THINK you're implying Jeff!!!

I was one of those "over 40" people....not in the 50+ range, but in the 45+ range. After not marching competitively for 11 years (2000 was my "retirement" year), I can honestly say for me it wasn't about the physical demand. It was more about my mental approach to that demand. By no means was I in any kind of physical shape to do competitive year (just ask Doc!), but my mental approach was a different story. Going to bed early, waking up full rested for the new day, eating right, drinking plenty of fluids, resting when they gave us rest. And I can honestly say, our drill was one of the most demanding drills in 2011. I was not a "pit soloist" either (Or a "lawn chair king")...I played my share of solos, BUT....I marched the FULL SHOW.

AND...I'm gonna attempt it again in 2012!!!!

All I am saying, is if you approach it the correct way, anything is possible for the "over 40's".

I'm with you Frank. Marched 6 years(2005-2010)with Bucs ages 51-56. Marched 5 of those years with 2 screws in my Right big toe, and 4 with a total knee replacement(back jazz running 11 weeks after the operation). It was the mind set that let it happen.(and hitting the gym 5 days a week)!

  3. it boggles the mind that there are hypothetical 6-year veterans who have never lost a show. how do these people even feel? are they motivated by the terror of potentially losing for the first time, or are they so confident that they'll win that they go out with relaxation and swagger? it took me a year and a show to win my first show, and that was with a corps that placed in the top 4 in 2006, my rookie year.

I think it's unfortunate, in a way: I had to give up marching a year and a half ago, and while I left willingly, the (substantial, but unfortunately overruled) part of me that wanted to stay might have fought harder had I thought there was a chance of toppling Reading.

I AM one of very few (possibly 4) that have NEVER lost in my years as a Reading Buccaneer. My motivation comes from inside. Otherwise, I would have quit sometime during the 37 non-winning years that preceeded those 6!

  4. Anyhow- just trynig to tie this wacky thread all together:

    Big W,

It was an enjoyable talk in Scranton indeed. I look forward to playing at SIB this year.

BD '93 and Phantom '89 are my two favorite shows in DCI. Neither of these shows won...doesn't matter. No complaints from me. Just enjoyed them alot. Still listen to them more than any others. The last 43 years in drum corps have taught me that, while not eveyrone can be number 1, we can all be our best, no matter what any pieces of paper tell us. I've been on both sides of the winning/losing thing now. I 've enjoyed it all. The experiences I've had and the friends I have made because of drum corps far out weigh any of the BS others think is a necessary part of our activity.

    Walter

Relax, folks!! I think some folks have already hit on it but I will- Everyone got a lot better in the top 5 in '10. I'd say Empire might be able to argue they were the "Most Improved" corps from last year and I think they'd have a very legit claim on that. I think that hypothetically, maybe that show'd beat '09 Reading. But since we don't have the equivalent Drum Corps version of Madden Football, we can't know for sure. Good for conversation over a tall St. Patrick's pint of Half-and Half, though... Reading was also a lot better this season programatically- they didn't sit and provide a stationary target- something easy to do if you're in their position. They managed to move the target forward. If they hadn't, we'd not be looking at a sixpeat right now, period.

Also-- reading between the lines, a lot of people gripe about a corps when it's not their fave and find more dirt and flaws in their program than their fave. It's a tendency that people will have, and it's very hard to get rid of and set it aside. I look back at myself as a kid and see it in me back then. I worked very hard to get by all that early in my life.

Finally, I think some people also have a firmly held belief that if it's their fave show it should win. The two can be very separate. I loved '09 MBI a ton! I also realized they didn't have quite the stank to beat the Bucs. Did I scream bloody murder about it here like a crazed ding-dong with an "MBI GOT SCREWED!!!!" thread!? Heck, no. There was no reason to do something that insane, for Pete's sake. The reality was the reality, and I understood what was going down- it wasn't the judges, etc. etc. ad nauseaum.... they just didn't have everything quite as neatly tended to.

Man, I still love '93 BD and '91 Crossmen a ton too, but do I think they were hosed? No!!!!! But I love them for what they were and for the way they inspire me anyway. I think some folks have gotta just settle down and start gaining some kinda enlightenment and understanding here instead of freakin' out like a ragin' ding-dong....

  5. DCA Championships placements only:

    9 - 1972 Hamburg Kingsmen

    8 - 1973 Hamburg Kingsmen

13 -1974 Hamburg Kingsmen (that one was painful)

    9 - 2000 Skyliners

1 - 2002 Erie Thunderbirds Mini Corps (this one made up for the pain)

1967-2004 Many corps, one Penn-York Championship, one Pa State Championship, Second Place in 1986 was my highest placement in DCA.

    2005 Lead Mello Reading Buccaneers

    2006 Lead Baritone Reading Buccaneers

    2007 Lead Baritone Reading Buccaneers

    2008 Lead Baritone Reading Buccaneers

    2009 Lead Baritone Reading Buccaneers

    2010 Lead Baritone Reading Buccaneers

It has been a great run for me, no matter the year.

  6. AND aside from that....which has proven to be difficult at best recently...I'm fairly sure there are members of Bucs who started in 05, never marched anywhere else, and have never experienced a loss.

There are 2 horn players, 1 drummer, and 3 guard members that have been with Reading since 05. Les than that have only been there since 05. Some were there beforehand, but not sure how many of us. I went to Bucs in '05, and after being in corps for the previos 37 years, these last six have been memorable to say the least.

  7. I have been marching Drum corps since 1967 and have been with Bucs for the last 5 years. I have 2 screws in mt right big toe, and an Cobalt left knee. I spend 5-6 nights a week in the gym, lifting weights and doing cardio. If you want to survive Bucs drill(thanks Bobby), the most important is the cardio. The horn playing will come back by doing. It forces me to stay fit.

My son and his fiancee both march at Bucs with me, and my daughter marched last summer, too.

    I'm 55.

    Walter Street

I also travel 4 hours from Pittsburgh every weekend---uphill, both ways!

  8. Ask Walt Street. That guy plays and marches like a bad ###.

  11. lots of good comments here,in each post........just the words "market house" bring back so many memories.playing with the alumni in reading pa. was the first time we(the brothers) had been togeather and fronted steel city, scince 1990. a gap of 18 years.i think that EVERYONE who stood in that arc of horns and drums,in 1987 has at one time or another said "what if?"i know I have...........for some reason i STILL feel that "things"were not finished............to this day.

"What if" sums it up well. I remember my feelings when they came to the horn arc to say that the finals were canceled. I haven't felt that bad too often in my lifetime. After '86, this was another nail in the coffin.
