  1. I googled Carleton Place Marching Saints today and found a link :D The 4th photo from the top is actually Scarborough Firefighters winter guard 1971-1972.

The snare drummer behind us wearing our corps uniform with a shako and plume might be Paul. The 15 year old guard captain with a shako and sabre is me!

The year before we got 2 point penalty for marking the floor with our boots. This early 1972 photo shows socks and running shoes = fewer penalties

Lots of corps guards as well as the whole corps doing standstill competition in the wintertime had to march on gym floors in socks. Didnt want to scuff up the floor with our shoes

  2. I went to a FB group called 1970's drum corps. It was fun reminiscing and seeing old pics like we do here. The difference is....there are old crotchety people that just want to put down what DCI and DCA do today. Other than electronics in DCI and the keys of the brass instruments...what is really so different today? I spend my time defending the activity but it's like the old guys sitting out in front of the barber shop and talking about what was better about the olden days. The kids were just as hard today and maybe even harder. Yes, there are less drum corps but the shows are still awesome to watch.

    Anyone else see the good?

While they're are some people in the FB 70's group that are anti-everything, I can still see the positives of most of the shows. I guess everyone has an opinion..?

  3. Remember the days marching in the Garden State Circuit?? Made friends in different corps but havent heard from them in awhile?? Come join us on facebook and reconnect with former members and competitors

Go to facebook and look for: Garden State Circuit - Jr. Drum & Bugle Corps

    See you there!

  4. Im one of those old dinosaurs that marched in the 70's and learned how to play a horn and march in my corps. We never had any auditions of any type to join our corps. When did auditions to corps begin versus corps taking members and teaching them how to play and march?

  5. I did not have the privilege of knowing Patsy personally, but I certainly knew of her reputation. Who in drum corps didn't? It warms my heart to read these moving tributes to a great lady, as they make it clear that she had a tremendous impact on countless lives. My condolences to all who knew her, and especially to her family.

I have to echo what Sue wrote........ I also didnt have the honor of meeting Patsy personally, but if you were involved with drum corps on the east coast as I was, she truly did impact the lives of many........My condolences to her family.

  6. I assure you, it's cancelled. The show situations in the NW are unfortunate, to say the least. There will be no shows in Washington this year.

Yup, no shows this year in Washington.. Heard that member corps didnt want to come up to the Pacific Northwest this year.... With the price of gas going though the roof, I hope that this isnt a permanent thing, but only just a one year reprieve...

As for other shows in the area

Jul 8th- OC show in portland, oregon

    Jul 9th- Boise, ID..

Thats all we get up here..........

  7. I"m going to go with 2 very drum corps oriented places.

    1. Kelly's in Wildwood NJ. Been a drum corps landmark for decades. the bar of choice after a show in Wildwood. I also had my first illegal underage drink at this place when I was 16. Stole my brother's draft card and used it as ID for the weekend.

    2. The Venice, Bayonne NJ. Probably the best drum Corps bar in the country and it was the watering hole for the best drum corps city in the country Bayonne, home of you know who.

Kelly's in wildwood definately was the place to be at while down in wildwood. I remember marcing past kellys during the parade and doing a park and blow for all the drum corps people camped out there watching the parade outside. Even downed a few there after I aged out of junior corps..... Ahh the memories...!

  8. Yes people would be astounded! In NY if you only go by state AL Championships you will only get a small idea of how many corps there were in NY. We marched in many parades and saw at least 10 parade corps in the Western NY area alone and probably more.

NJ was pretty much the same at both VFW and American Legion shows in Wildwood. I remember standing on the "inspection line" at Maxwell Field as the sun was coming up over the horizon. The show lasted from early morning probably to almost lunchtime. Then a few hours off to rest before the parade. NJ drum corps at its finest!!

  9. Y'know, it is possible that we started the 79 season with a different set of flags... 29 years later, my rememberer might not function at full capacity. Too many of my brain cells gave their lives since then (especially DURING then).

The opposite for me......... I can remember all about the 70's and drum corps shows that I competed in, but ask me where I put my keys..... Like I'm susposed to remember something from 5 minutes ago!

  10. ME!! :worthy:

Seriously, if the 1980 L.I. Kingsmen could have marched, we would have scared the #^% out of the 10-12 corps that year. How we came in 16th overall, but 26th in M&M, is beyond me.

Ahh... Understand your pain.....we could drum well, good horn lines..... marching... Not so good.. must be an east coast kinda thing...
