  1. Spokane Thunder is Pleased to Announce it’s 2008 Program:

    ANTITHESIS

Relying heavily on the idea of contrast, Antithesis is a nine-minute aural landscape, weaving in and out of darkness and light. This original composition by Nick Golding and Jeffrey Willis uses extended tertian harmonies, elements of pandiatonicism, and traditional western harmonies to create a juxtaposition of the wide and opposing spectrum of emotions that exist within the human psyche. We hope you enjoy our 2008 production, and look forward to performing it at a stadium near you!

Will we get the chance to see the corps this year....In Spokane..??

  2. WOW indeed! I saw them at prelims in Philly.:grouphug:

WOW is definitely the word and I was a Madison lover but on that day I was hard pressed to pick my favorite corps and show of the day!!!

Exactly.......... the crowd was definatly rocking for the muchachos at philly.... and Jeff Kievit could surely work that soprano horn of his to the crowds delight!!!!

  3. Jo is so correct on this...

It wasnt that we didnt or couldnt march another corps.......... the bonds to our particular corps was so strong that myself and others decided not to march with any other coprs. My last year marching was 1978, my corps last year was in 83... maybe it was a diffent time where loyalty to your corps still existed..........

  4. There are a LOT of schools that will not allow for housing due to a combination of early school starts, liability issues, and bad experiences with previous visits. Althought I will not defend DCI for dropping the ball...I have seen that too much lately. :worthy:

Bad experiences with previous visits..........??? And DCI finals has been to So Cali before?

  5. I was totally amazed watching the cadets in the orange bowl in 1983. They had the crowd in their hands from the beginning to the infamous z-pull, to the crowd chanting in unison "East, East, East". What a spine tingling moment watching the first of garfields many championships..!

  6. Anybody remember when they had the big white scoreboard down by the field? They would use black magic marker for the scores. You'd be up in the stands saying "is that an 8 or a 3?" If I'd brought binoculars I wouldn't have to run down there to see the score.

OH Man........... I remember the big white scoreboard!!!!!! Seen it at the World Open many times........... Drum corps before all the electronics age!!!!!!

  7. I'll give a quick one of the Spokane show on Fri, July 27th. :

    DIV III

Spokane Thunder: Hometown corps didn't disappoint. Their show is "24-Hour Suite", and it starts off with an arm swing from the guard, and an alarm clock effect that really woke up the crowd, generating tons of applause. A lot of homage to SCV, who did a very similar show a few years back. This group is coming along when it comes to demand and execution...they finished last...but TOOK GE Music. Bravo, and can't wait to see you next year (my nephew might march them :))

Citations: Really fun group, and a fun, in your face Latin show called "Passions of a Latin Groove." THANK YOU for coming all the way out here from MA. The thing that really stuck out for me for this show was how well they marched. Very clean feet, and a lot of energy in the visual program. Looked like they were having fun, too, which just makes the audience like it that much more. They proved that you can't go wrong with pieces like Pegasus, and my favorite part of the show was the closer...truly en fuego. I liked it muy mucho!

Oregon Crusaders: These guys are a fixture at the Spokane show just about every year, and we love them. Smaller than last year, but they really sold the program, despite some major changes, it seems. Their show is called "Gates," and the rep is minimal pieces by Glass and a guy named Ney Rosauro, whom I had never heard of. Loved their rendition of 1000 Airplanes on the Roof, and they maneuvered through their gates very well. Percussion really drove the corps. VERY nice brass sound, and it'll be interesting to see if they stay at the DIV III level, and how they adapt to it in the future.

Fever: I actually don't remember the name of this show, and I'm not familiar with their rep, but they brought it to us in Spokane, especially visually. All sections of the corps were very strong, and I found myself fixated on their guard performance more than anything. Great group of performers, overall, and it was nice to hear them blast a few chords at us. The crowd really seemed to respond to this corps visual program the most of all of the DIV III corps. Great job.

    DIV II

Vanguard Cadets: They played some Robert W. Smith music I love in their show, "Ascension." First of all, they have a pretty tough drill book and they play a lot while they move, so I appreciate the musicality they were able to maintain. I really liked a lot of the music impact points, particularly the end of the opener. Solid corps, overall, and I was very impressed by this, my first viewing of them.

Blue Devils B: Like the Vanguard Cadets, this group looked quite young, but they came out ready to impress. Percussion was particularly strong, IMO, and their feature generated lots of appreciative applause. VERY good marching. Clean feet, and good transitions between sets. Overall, visual program was good, but the music is what sold the show for me...couldn't hurt that it was the music of Emerson, Lake, and Palmer. :)

Jersey Surf: Wow. Thanks for coming out here all the way from NJ, first of all. Great show called "Snapshots From an American Journey," which, I assume, has something to do with said travelling all the way out here from the East Coast. :) Great group, and strong everywhere. Guard really sells the theme, the props are spot on...they look like blow-ups of actual photos from the city and the country. I don't really understand how the "rep" portion of their GE visual wasn't in the 9s yet, because let me tell you, that is some tough drill. ESPECIALLY at the end of the show. Holy cow, they fly. And play, I might add, very well. Please, come back. :)

Great night for Drum Corps, like I said, and the venue was pretty full. Hope to see more of all of these guys in the future.

Agreed........ was at the Spokane show........ Thanks Surf for coming to WA state. .. You made this transplanted Jersey boy proud!!!!! C'mon back soon!!!!!!!

  8. He is a very strong player and project quite well during his solo and blends in great with players on the field. He seems to have a keen since of dinamics.

Agreed.............. Saw him in spokane on friday night.......... Excellent and very dynamic horn player who definately knows how to play his horn. OC should be proud to have him in their hornline......

  9. Thom,

It was great to march on Maxwell Field once again facing the original concert side ( I march with the Bridgemen). We rehearsed behind the baseball field, and it was a pleasure to be on such a well manicured grass surface. Sure makes it easier on old legs. I go back a long way with Wildwood drum corps, first saw '62 Legion states as a 9 year old, sitting in the old baseball bleachers watching corps like Sac, Blue Rock, the Victorians, Jersey Cyclones , etc ( and my dad who marched with the Lambertville Volunteers trying to get within 10 points of the cabs every year). I've marched down Atlantic Avenue with various corps over the years probably over 50 times since 1969.

In later years (71-73) I competed with Blue Rock at Maxwell Field, and had fond memories of standing on the inspection line, and playing to the fours rows of rickety green bleachers, and GE judges being on top of an Econoline Van. It was great to see the new bleachers up. I was in Wildwood for the Legion Parade, and they weren't even started yet. The lighting is also great. Remember the old Legion States shows where corps were rehearsing at 600am because they had to be on the inspection line by 745am? Can remember one year they announced the scores by just calling out the Legion Post numbers, so everybody was trying to fgure out who finished wwhere.

I also vaguely remember the Blue Angels from when I marched with the Earls of Bucks- I believe we may have competed against you in an ensemble competition somewhere- plus my grandparents lived in Villas , so I remember hearing something about the corps back then reading a local paper.

The Bridgemen had a great time in Wildwood hopefully we'll return next season. The town is coming along nicely- like all the new condos and lodging facilities springing up, plus it has a cleaner look now. Thanks for the pictures , and updates on Wildwood shows. They are appreciated.

    RCC

Thanks for the walk down memory lane........ I too remember standing on the " inspection" line at 0-dark-30 waiting for the judges to inspect us and performing at such an early time on sat morning. But, with all the corps in NJ at the time, guess we had to start early. And the parades..........playing to the crowd at "Kelly's... What a blast!!!!!

  10. I am shocked that there were not really any reviews of this show, Especially given the Div II show down

I am new at this so bare with me:

First of all what a beautiful night for Drum Corps. It was nice to have bleachers this year, even though they were incomplete and they had a lift for the judges. field looked to be in good shape. Show started a half hour late due to traffic congestion for many of those coming to the show

7th Regiment: Saw them in Bristol a couple of weeks ago. Very nice improvement

Citations: Very nice complete look about them. they were thinking about the details with in thier show and trying to give the audience the latin feel

    Targets: did not see

Spirit of Newark/New Jersey: Saw them last year. what an improvement

    Division II:

Raiders: I love WSS and they did an admirable job. they let the music be their vehicle and not the story line. I think some of the guard work was a little over written for them, especially in the saber section. Sometimes simpler can be just as good if not more effective

Spartans: Nice show. Very clean. Very well thought out package. would like to see this in a higher venue (oh I will in Pasadena). Show seems a little monotone throughout and could use a little more music dynamics

Surf: Loud Loud Loud They grab you right from the beginning with a near Div I impact. the large guard is very talented and placed well throughout the show. guard needs to be a little cleaner as does the marching.

Div II is going to be very interesting, especially when these groups meet up with the west coast.

All participants should be pleased with what they did at this show, Hopefully I did not offend anyone and people enjoy this simple, brief review B)

Get to see Surf and I think Citations in Spokane, WA this friday.......... What a ride from the east coast to the pacific northwest!!!
