  1. Age-wise, I've heard they have tended to be a young corps. I imagine it's hard to keep experienced, talented kids from jumping to SCV and BD.

A few years back a similar thread appeared, and difficulty in keeping veterans was considered a key factor. What's too bad is many who march with Academy sing praises about the experience, but not making finals yet has made many seek other corps. This is not just an Academy problem. Based on conversations I have had it has happened with Colts, Surf, and Spirit, and my guess with other corps too. Many are saying this could be the year, though I think we need to see more shows and scores to make that determination, but if it should not happen, I hope veterans will march again, because this is probably the only way Academy will move ahead. If the do place in the top 12, retaining veterans will be easier.

This is their main problem. Retention. While I know there were a lot of vets who stayed 10 years ago, I also know a lot of them went on to other corps. A lot of people who have marched at The Academy simply used it as a stepping stone to BD, SCV, etc. Also, you have to remember that they're still a relatively new corps. This year is 12 years since their first ever DCI show, and 10 years since their Division 2 Championship.

  2. Not only the members, but the volunteers, too. Spirit shared a housing site with an Open Class Corps a while back (sadly, I don't recall the name) and the other Corps had a minor food truck emergency. The Spirit vols were able to come to their aid and were rewarded by a very nice platter of goodies (quickly devoured).

Plus, every once in a while logistics are such that several Corps can get together for a Food Truck Pot Luck that the members aways enjoy.

Oh yes. The Food Truck Pot Luck is always fun. And of course, we're always grateful for the amazing volunteers!

  3. If I read today's schedule correctly and according to notes from the wife, Pacific Crest and Academy are sharing a housing site. It appears they will each get to watch the other's run-thru and then will share dinner before heading to the show.

I love it when the Corps can hang out like this and just be kids.

All the best to ALL the Corps tonight!

It's always fun to share a housing site. I remember sharing facilities a couple times when I was in The Academy in 2006. We shared with Oregon Crusaders at one spot, and I believe 7th Regiment at another. It was so fun to perform for each other, and hang out afterwards and get to know the other members.

  4. All corps that I saw were wonderful last night. My group spent the first half of the night in the lot and saw some great things. I'm not sure what was up with the field, but I saw several kids go down, or nearly go down. The most noticeable was Pacific Crest's bass 5. Took him a while to recover, which is understandable. Overall, the quality of performance was very good. I had goosebumps during PC, Madison, and Academy's shows!

My only complaint is that Santa Clara Vanguard chose not to come this year. As far as I know, SCV has been coming to the Phoenix show for the past 15 years. Still, a very entertaining and fun night!

  5. So thanks to Hrothgar15's file, I created a couple ringtones and an alarm tone based on the opener for SCV.

    Google Drive Link: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B_Vt8qTPMT_dbWsxR1M1UUg3RWM

    Download mp3 for Android

    Download m4r for iOS

    2 Ringtones & 1 Alarm

    1. Ringtone 30sec - 20th through 50th seconds of the opener

    2. Ringtone 30sec - Progression before opening hit

    3. Alarm ~2 minutes - Full Opener (Use this for your alarms. It is not jarring and slowly gets louder until the big hit.)

    THANK YOU!

  6. Such hate. Every single one of those kids is out there busting ### to grow, learn, and to entertain us. Kudos to all of these amazing performers and students. In the meantime, I have to say that I really enjoyed the Bluecoats package, including the uniform. However, I wish they had some sort of headwear. They look incomplete out there. Otherwise, ####### love it!
