  2. Great review......this reviewer really nailed it. Some quick thoughts: I couldn't believe how prepared the Buccaneers were. All sections were strong, confident and sold the show. I'm curious to see how the Cadets 2 will fare against this show. (Felt strange to write that). :-) For June, the Cabs were very well prepared , just not as prepared as the Buccs. This would have been a running start for a Championship year for the Cabs during any other era, but the Bucs are really pushing the "readiness" level for corps. The Cab show is true to their entertainment tradition so it's just a matter of how well they can clean and tweak it. They were my wife's favorite. That said, I think the Cabs are still in the game to grab the title. It's just a matter of how hungry they are and how much ground they can catch up on. Fusion's brass were hot and entertaining with great feet and body.....but I don't remember the drill being too demanding. Their brass line certainly could certainly make a run for a brass trophy. Gold and Fusion were great examples of smaller corps with good quality programs and well rounded ensembles/sections but because Gold's guard was so good, I had them slightly over Fusion. I know how much talent and experience there is in Windsor Regiment, so I was surprised how weak the show was. Perhaps the show is over ambitious and/or is written for September. They have a lot on their plate to get this show up and running but the members and staff have a lot of drum corps experience so I'm sure they will be working hard and adapting and it will be a lot different show in September.

  3. Here we are on March 17th, and there's been a lot of discussion and comments on this thread of several pages long. So to help those who have just heard about this, and don't want to read dozens of pages on the topic, here is a brief summary ( an an apology to those if I left out something ):

    A) The Cadets Drum Corps are looking for a Unicorn.

b)Some alums ( and fans ) like the current Unicorn and don't want another Unicorn.

C)The Cadets Director has a Unicorn in mind, and will shortly be going up and done the east coast explaining to the Cadets alums why he wants a new Unicorn.( Nobody has seen this Unicorn yet)

d)To honor an older Unicorn, the Corps Director of The Cadets will have a day this summer to honor the Unicorn. All those who like and appreciate the older version of the Unicorn will have an opportunity to come by and look at the Unicorn and admire once again the Unicorn. They'll be people from different decades there with this Unicorn.

    e) This year's Unicorn will be temporary. Then this Unicorn will disappear.

    f) Many posters on this thread have requested that we not make any judgement on any of this just yet. Many have requested that we all wait until we see the Unicorn first.

And in the meantime, Happy Saint Patrick's Day to all !

    LOL

  4. Poor Logic - 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2010 were in 100% traditional uniforms...pins and all (minus the wool, of course...). 2003 and 2004 looked exactly the same from far away, but were admittedly a little 'cheap looking'. 2005 and 2006 ill give you... but from the front they still looked traditional. This year is anybody's guess...but the blatant disregard for facts in these arguments is becoming silly, even at best, you exagerrated your statistics by double to make a point...

I literally went back to edit my dates but you had already replied to my post(you are right..... I forgot 2007 and 2008 were in the traditional uniform). I don't consider the 2003 to 2004 (and especially 2005 and 2006) to be at all close to being the traditional uniform. You really need to take a better look at those years.

  5. I REALLY want to see an article, transcript, minutes of a meeting, or anything that says the uniform is going away next year. I mean seriously, I will be disappointed if it is, but so far I haven't seen or heard anything that states it's going away permanantly.

You don't need anything in writing......Just look at the recent past starting from the first year the uniform was changed(2003). 5 out of the last 9 seasons (2003 to 2011) will have been performed in a costume and 4 out of the last 9 seasons were performed in the traditional West Point style uniforms. These year after year temporary changes are becoming not so temporary.

  6. I know that they have the same respect for the uniform. Every bit of it.

Just not the same attachment to it that we do. That X factor isn't as strong for them. They're used to change.

I know exactly how you feel. Exactly. But, I can only refer you back to my epiphany. It's their Corps now.

Can some of the younger Cadet Alumni help me with this WITHOUT hostility? You're far more qualified to express this than I am. Maybe send Robby a PM if you don't want to post out in the open?

Maybe they don't have "...the same attachment to it that we do", because since 2003 until 2008 (6 seasons), the uniform has been so played with and adulterated like no other time in its history.

Edit: I originally wrote 2009 when it should have been 2008.

  7. 1 last post...

I've had several PM's with a younger Alumni of The Cadets and he's given me a few things to think about.

Please bear with me as I try to articulate a few of my thoughts.

When I first heard of the uniform change I immediately saw red. I was furious. As I stated in previous posts I tried to explain those feelings. I honestly was not attacking the current members and I want to stress that. It's important to me that be understood. I have zero expectation that non-Cadets will understand the devotion that some of us have for our uniform. That's fine too.

    Now for the epiphany...

It's still my Corps. But it's not. Yes, FHNSAB. But, it's THEIR Corps now. It's theirs to do with as they wish. It appears to me that the younger Alumni do not have the same attachment to the uniform that some of us do from "back in the day". That doesn't make MY devotion any less. It doesn't change MY experience. Sure I'd love it if they felt the same way as I do. But as those of you that attempted to force your opinion on those of us that feel the way we do, it's also not right for us to force our opinions on them. Shocker, right? I nearly passed out when that sunk in. You're probably right that some of us were being selfish. I told myself that protecting that tradition would benefit the current members so that they too could enjoy that aspect of Cadetdom. Turns out that they don't seem to need it. Which is fine. Regardless of whatever uniform The Cadets wear in the future that iconic West Point uniform is still an important part of me. It can never be taken away. Whatever values the current members have are a part of them as well. Who am I to try to take them away?

Finally, if any of my posts have offended any of the current membership I sincerely apologize.

I remember vividly how happy and excited I was the day I was sent into the uniform room to try on uniform jackets as I was being fitted for my entire uniform. It was a dream come true and an honor to put on that traditional Cadets uniform. I also remember being at a show in 1984 and all the respect I had for my friend after seeing him in his Garfield Cadets uniform. I am very surprised by your statement that "It appears to me that the younger Alumni do not have the same attachment to the uniform that some of us do from "back in the day"". If that is true, that is sad.

  8. It's amazing to look at pictures of The Cadets from even the late 1930's, and see how remarkably similar and unchanged your uniforms have been over these last 75 some odd years. While it's certainly true that a " Cadet " is not a " Cadet" simply by virtue of the uniform, ( ie, it is the values, camaraderie, work effort, determination, and all the other intangibles that come to the fore ) it is one of The Cadets most distinquishable, identiable, qualities that the viewing public first notices. It is a wonderfully designed, classically inspired Drum Corps, " Cadet- style" uniform.

    Exactly!

  9. What is the image of The Cadets?

    2387274770001244023qFAsew_th.jpg

"The Cadets is one of the most honored drum corps in history and it needs to recreate its brand to be more in line with the current image of the corps. What is the image of The Cadets? It is an image of tradition and excellence that has not changed since the corps’ formation 75 years ago. Unlike the iterations of logos that have represented The Cadets, there is only one image that has stayed consistent. The image of the corps – its visual appearance – is defined by its uniform.

The Cadets uniforms are the defining visual image of the corps. The maroon and gold West Point style uniforms are immediately recognizable like no other in the drum corps activity. The logo design graphically represents the image and ideals of The Cadets in a couple ways.

The main element of the logo is an abstraction of a piece of uniform – the embroidery on the sleeves. Because of their repetition and orientation, the arrows connote the idea of dynamism, innovation, and forward thinking. Their boldness portrays power. A partial outline around the arrows represents the idea of being on the edge and pushing the boundaries, and assists the arrows in appearing more dynamic. It is also the letter C, for Cadets.

Through these elements, the logo is also a nod to the logos of the past. The arrows are evolved from the logos of the Garfield Cadets and the Cadets of Bergen County, and the outline is a nod to the logos of Holy Name and most recently, the running man."
