We pretty much never stopped on those types of trips. In 1982, our first show of national tour was Whitewater, Wisconsin. We went stright through to a small town near Boulder, CO where the former corps director lived and practiced there for 4 - 5 days, then did the rest of the trip straight through. That was about 2,000 miles for the first show in two 1,000 mile legs.
In '83 it was Concord to Casper. Every other year I marched it was either Anaheim or Concord straight through to Ogden.
Just some food for thought...
2004 tour of champions; The corps going on to CA left from Denver to meet up in southern Utah for a mass rehearsal day. Those that took the 70 west to the 15 were on the road for hours going through the rockies (Mine took over 20). Cadets avoided it altogether and went via Cheyenne.
Don't knock AA, so far they have managed to do what no other corps from AZ has done. ..

Its also worth mentioning that theCardinals use the dome at NAU for their preseason camp. Once that is over the college team starts to move in. Its also likely that the teams from UA and ASU will be in full swing by then. Looking at the UOP stadium site, nothing on their event calendar indicates DCI for that day.
If UOP is out, the pickings could be slim on where to go. The only over dome I can think of is in Springerville http://www.elks.net/dome/dome.html#DomeInformation and there is no way it can handle the crowd a major regional would attract.
Weird that a domed HS stadium would be in AZ of all places...
Hoping that things work out with UOP

I forgot to add in earlier that the drive from Phoenix to LA is nowhere as lengthly as Allentown to Madison, or Indy to Denver. Both of those spans occured in previous years the weeks leading into finals

Been away for a bit here, so I have no idea if I have just been hooked by some flame bait....
No it's not, it's about 8 hours by car to LA......so you're talkin about 10 hours by bus. Not all schools start in July or the first week of August. My old high school started I think the 2nd or 3rd week of August. So there are ways around it. And yes it does get hotter than 120 on a normal basis, atleast 5-8 times a summer. August is usually the worst. 115 on average, but some nights when the monsoon hits there's no way to practice in that...30mph winds and hard rain with lightning...no thank you!!All depends where you are going to in LA, can be 6 hours, and it can be more. As for the heat... 120 is possible, but far from normal. By my quick read phoenix has a total of 3 days where the record heat was in 120 or greater. I will agree with you that the monsoons are a concern, and in my mind a more significant one.
Well, you know. I'm really concerned about the sound in the domes. The echo might be too bad. This thread has shown that nothing positive can happen from this show. As you know, I am from the southwest and there aren't any drum corps fans there. The show should just be cancelled.This should be no more of a concern than having finals go to INDY. Also a stadium that has yet to finish construction so who knows what it will be.
Guess the crowds at the shows the Academy host each summer are a mirage in the desert......

You get everything from great to scary! Like the poster above, more and more corps seem to be using charter services and that has resulted in better equipment, and possibly more adherence to the DOT rules on miles/hours in a day or week.
Its tough for a corps to own their own equipment and still be able to keep it in top condition, while chartering busses can be more expensive, it can also be a safer bet. A charter bus blows a transmission and you are out a few hours time while they get a replacement. Blow a transmission on a bus you own, and the pricetag can start at 10K and go up from there. That is in addition to the time the bus is down as well.
Some groups who charter somehow get the drivers to stay with the corps and sleep in the "traditional" drivers room. Dont know how they pulled that off, but you gotta give them credit for being able to.
I have driven just about every year since 92 and have never heard of DCI having a rule to limit the amount of traveling. The closest I can recall is a story with Star where they had a driver who went over the 8 hour driving limit that was imposed by Bill Cook (at the time one of the rules from DOT limited driving to no more than 10 straight hours). As the story goes, once Cook found out, the driver was let go and the message was sent. Nobody drives more than 8.
We seem to have come a long ways over the years. I can still remember the first big (national) tour I was on. 84 VK with Nelson Smith driving one of the old submarines.

Were Troopers represented at the BOD Meetings?
Is the Board made up of all Div 1 Directors, or a smaller group? (top 12)?
It would seem odd that a unanimous vote would occur if the Troopers were represented and had a vote to place along with all the others??
