  1. I was at the preview last evening. The wind was blowing up to 25 mph or so the entire evening. The wind was so bad, that the guard flag tosses would shift 5 to 10 yard over while in the air. When you see the uniforms under the light and without a lot of wind, they look well tailored and fit. The pants looking wide and frumpy is due to the wind. I saw the corps at an ensemble rehearsal under the lights at the new UW LaCrosse stadium, and the unis are great. As for the separation of upper body and lower body, it is very defined. The uni was not designed to be effective at parade rest. When you see them with their horns up, there is a complete separation between upper and lower body. As with ALL corps' unis and shows in general, until you see it in person under the lights, you are only able to speculate. Of course, opinions are the purpose of this forum, so fire away. I know I do. But, I do believe these unis are a step forward for the Blue Stars. Check em out in Normal.

You aren't hiding anything from us ,..are you????

  2. Agreed. The last few years, it seems like Madison's early season has been dominated by show design problems and talent problems. This year, the show works on opening day and all sections of the corps seem like they can do what's being asked of them. They just need to clean it and perform the snot out of it. They'll certainly get a huge crowd reaction, and most likely they'll do OK with the judges too.

Well,...there have been many years when crowd reaction didn't win a thing.

  3. I just thought I'd update everyone as to how many actually could receive money from this program. All of these corps will benefit greatly from monies received (and some may return to the competitive fold). So, please, vote.

Current rankings of all drum corps in the top 250 as of the last scoreboard update:

    Spirit -- 30th Place

    Pacific Crest -- 37th Place

    Madison Scouts -- 110th Place

    Blue Stars -- 114th Place

    VK! -- 145th Place

Music City Legend (DCA) -- 148th Place

    Alliance (DCA) -- 172nd Place

    Troopers -- 195th Place

    Americanos (Alumni) -- 204th Place

    Bluecoats -- 209th Place

    BAC -- 245th Place

Music City Jr. -- 247th Place

    Blue Knights -- 254th Place

Your leaderboard is far different than what mine reads,...mine only shows 190 groups entered so far????

  4. Let's just say that I don't know. I'm just historically skeptical of the response. I've seen a lot of folks get a corps history screwed up before and I'm no exception. That includes their own websites.

I appreciate the statement that you don't know,...and while a lot of people have thought that the name was derived from WWII,...it's a good story, it just isn't the case here. A lot of people have assumed over the years the same thing, including the people that told Alex that story during his time with the corps.

I knew both of the founders of the corps and got the story of how the corps got it's name directly from them. I talked to one of them last year when I bumped into him at his favorite hangout in LaCrosse, and he collaborated the story then also.

  5. I'm pretty sure that the Blue Stars derived their name from WWII. If a family had a member in the military, they placed a blue star in their window, and if they were killed they would replace it with a gold one. (Some families still do).

The Blue Stars name did NOT derive their name from WWII. One of the original founders of the corps liked a jazz singing group from France called The Blue Stars. The corps took their name from that group.

  6. The Boston Red Sox fans go to the games to see great games among giants in baseball. They of course want to see THEIR team win. I doubt that many Boston fans boo the Yankees due to philosophical differences.

Lots of drum corps fans of course also want to see their "team" win. But being disrespectful to certain corps (as has been suggested by some) and by extension to the members accomplishes nothing.

  7. This is the kind of reactive, flawed logic that destroys organizations rather than makes them better. You offer NO ideas yourself, just pure vetriol.

It's great you're writing a check to Madison, but keep in mind that Mason and gang were the original break away bunch with new ideas on market expansion (and they did it!).

Mason and gang were the original breakaway bunch??? Do you mean The Combine(1971) or Brass Theater and Blast???

And isn't it interesting that they all came back.

  8. My question would be, why weren't you buying those things before? were those corps souvies not good enough before, but now you'll help them out because the G7 made you upset?

Only supporting the big corps and only going into the stadium when it was time for the big corps is what has made them believe that they are the draw and the only reason people go to shows.

Your answer would be,....I WAS buying those things before. I bought items from every corps. I sat through and watched every corps perform at every show I attended. My option is to buy from who I choose to,...and this year will be different. Maybe I will even leave the stadium when the, as you call them, the big corps start to perform. That is my choice. I never stated that the G-7 made me upset,....they just helped me make a decision.

  9. MMMM,...this didn't work the first time for Star when it was called,...

    BLAST!!!

(I attended the first show of Blast twice and loved it. Walked out of the second production halfway through)

At least they had the guts to go out and do what they believed in themselves. They didn't need the blessing of DCI, or have your cake and eat it too.

  10. In my opinion, I don't think it really matters what we would like. The biggies have pretty much stated the fact that souvie sales mean more to them than the actual shows. They realize that they have to be "so-called" at the top to succeed at those type of sales, and don't care what they have to do to achieve them.

I am convinced that the touring model that we know today, with all that goes with it, will not be the norm in a few years,....and I am almost sure that I will finally, after 40 plus years in the activity, pretty much not give a rats ### anymore.

  11. Good Heavens. Apparently I'm not demonstrating excellence in communication. Probably because I'm wearing this super tight pair of hose to help treat my varicose veins.

I understood everything you said, and I always remember this,......

Always wear clean underwear in case you get in an accident.

  12. This post was meant to be much more than dress, but I'll acquiesce (for now). Note: my comments are limited in this response to the way the staff dresses for the corps members and not for the public

Question to parents: Do you care how the teachers at your child's school dress? Does it have any impact at all? or am I just being an old fuddy duddy who remembers when my teachers actually wore ties and were very crisp.

Lest anyone think I'm not aware of cultural shifts, I am NOT suggesting that drum corps staffs wears ties. However, dress DOES communicate. We all notice dress and we all equate it with excellence or non-excellence. If I go to the store and see someone who is dressed in their pajamas (did everyone just picture someone shopping at WalMart?) I don't think, "I bet they are successful and strive for excellence."

When you are young and not responsible for anybody but yourself, recognizing the importance of the small things just doesn't matter. However, when you have your first child and you feel the overwhelming weight of responsibility for their life, all of a sudden you become aware (or at least you should).

I for one care about the small things. And, let me say from experience to some of you who say none of this matters, that those who are successful pay attention to the details in every aspect of their life. Or . . . does that principle only apply to marching and playing?

Simply put,.....you never know who is watching, when they are watching, and why they are watching. It would be better to represent the activity with that in the back of your mind all the time. Whether you do it for yourself first is up to you,....but you are also representing something much bigger than yourself.

  13. Well for that matter guns are not inherently violent either, they're just chunks of metal and in some cases wood, or I guess a composite of some kind.....but I digress. My point is that violence is a HUMAN thing.

    It's not a toy,...it's an orange gun!!!!

  14. Anyone have something to say regarding the long stick?

Before dot books, drill charts, hash marks, etc.,.....we had those long poles called interval sticks.

Some had nails in them at the interval marks so you could feel where you had to be instead of being told by the person holding it behind you.

    Is that right Mike???
