  1. To beat the heat (pun) discussion a bit more, the local weather people here in OKC are losing their mind over how many days in a row it'll be over 100. Like tornado season losing their mind. The main power supplier in OKC has a deal where your KWH rate is half between 7pm and 2pm the next day. Make your house into a meat locker until 2pm, and grind it out to 7 when everyone's air kicks on and the lights dim Green Mile style đŸ™‚

For those that are local to the BA area ... do we know what the policy is on bringing our own water bottles into the stadium? The few shows we have here in Oklahoma, the policy varies wildly. IIRC the last show in BA sold the water for a buck, but that could be wishful thinking but that will determine how soon I think a lot of us file into the stadium.

    Thanks and safe travels everyone!

  2. one of the knocks against the Glassmen that I hear all the time is the hornline is young. I have been told by some CMM's that the hornline this year has one of the highest return rate of vets. 18 vets alone in the Sop. line. I still think a top 8 is very real, here is why I say that.

Year First show score Finals Finish

    95 58.90 8th

    97 61.20 8th

    98 67.00 5th

    99 65.80 5th

    00 68.30 8th

    01 65.35 5th

    02 66.60 8th

    09 66.70 ???

    Dean

As you seem to be in the know about the Glassmen Dean(and anyone else of course), do you think that the scores from earlier seasons are skewed due to the fact that most of those earlier shows in their 5th place days were judged with a full panel of judges or at very least, with field judges?

And do corps in general recognize anniversaries of major shows like sports teams do? I.E. Would the Glassmen have some sort of notice/recognition for the 10 year anniversary of their 5th place corps? Just wondering. You see it a lot at sporting events, especially minor league (not that DCI is minor league) where it'll be the 10 anniversary of the championship team or whatever. Just thinking out loud on 3rd shift. Sorry

  3. That sounds more like spam than anything else. For you to receive legitimate emails to the Glassmen would take manual editing on the web admin's part, and I don't know why he would do that.

I got some under the "Toledoshows" mailing list. There's an unsubscribe link at the very bottom. As i'm nowhere near Toledo anymore ... it's not essential for me. From looking at their website, it seems they may be having database problems. There's a plea to register as alumni on the website, usually means some data loss but I could be wrong. That could be the cause, but good luck!

  4. Spoke to my son on Friday nigh after the show and he said the kiddos are pretty pumped about a couple of "teachers" returning from their individual homes for finals week. Most notable he is happy the main brass man has returned. For him to still be excited about the possibliles of improving says it all for me. Could a 90 be possible? That number didn't mean anything to me 3 months ago, but it sure does now. Can't wait to see the kids again on Thursday.

This might be the wrong forum, but does anyone know if the Glassmen are doing the encore on Monday night in Toledo? Or would it be Phantom. Just curious as I was thinking of making the drive up from IN.

    Thanks!!

  5. Glassmen had much more energy tonight than this afternoon. Didn't like the pit problems though

It did seem better than the afternoon, but they always say that last impression is what the judges remember and having the volume go up about 20 levels (Ok .. more like 4 or 5) as soon as they stop running on the last chord is the impression I remember. I'm sure they'll be fine.

  6. It's got some good and some bad. Part of the good/bad is that on any given night corps A can beat corps B by having one judge be out to lunch. Also it puts a lot more excitement in play as it keeps our slotting ideas at bay. But, when it is all said and done, I'd much rather see the full panels and have the corps get the opportunity to be evaluated on every catagory/sub catagory with equal weight!!!

I just think everyone is going to freak out when the field judge come into play. While most people agree the "big points" are in GE, if you are a mess on the field ... it's going to be an issue. I think there are corps out there that could swing 5 or 6 points (really) when the field judges come back .. but I could be wrong.

  7. And the August 4th Toledo show IS in the Glass Bowl. I won't be, however, as I will be attending the August 4th MASSILLON show, which is less than an hour from my home AND on my birthday.

Does anyone know why it wasn't at the Glass Bowl? I drove in from Ft. Wayne and knew it was at that high school but I swung by UT to see if anyone was rehearsing there anyway. Without actually stepping on the field, I really didn't see much that would have stopped a show from going on. Maybe it was underneath or something. It looked like the basketball arena on the hill there (not sure how else to describe it) was under major renovations but it didn't seem to effect the stadium.

Does anyone have any news or pictures of what was going on there?

  8. I looked for brass staff members I knew from last year, didn't see any. Did Waymire leave?

I sat behind some parents at the toledo show and by eavesdropping on their conversation (they seemed to be in the know but take it for what it's worth) Waymire got rid of the staff from before when he was in there, brought in his staff from Madison, then was gone after one year. Most of the staff is new this year. But I could be wrong.

    Does anyone know for sure?

  9. 9. HONK HONK HONK

    10. Boston

    11. Colts

    12. Glassmen

    Out:

    Madison

    Spirit

After watching the webcast, I was sure that Blue Stars were in the night show. I think Glassmen are going to get the bump. They just don't seem to have improved as much as everyone else. While there are some noticeable differences (The drill seems less hectic, the sitting down portion), there doesn't seem to be that much added to the music book to keep up. Visually, they've got lots of effect, with the guard, the shields at the end, but the music I think is lacking some of the , pardon the obvious reference, pizzaz, that some of the corps that are fighting to get in have.

But as always, like my predictions in the past, i'm sure i'll be wrong.

  10. It sounds like your girl friend has kept you off DCP as well as missing todays afternoon show.

Probably a good thing (no DCP that is).

Long story short: New management, new staff, lots of vets followed the departing staff to where ever they went, lots of young rookies,

to top it off a complete rewrite of the drill since the first show and a lot of musical changes as well.

They're really getting a lot better every show IMHO and now that the changes are done they can concentrate on cleaning.

Sorry to jump back in time about 20 pages but didn't I read that Madison's Brass staff is now the Glassmen Brass staff ergo Glassmen is mainly consisted of Scouts refugees?

(Nothing derogatory is meant by the term refugee .. just interesting where kids go and why)

  11. anything yet ... I've loaded, re-loaded, refreshed, stirred the Hamburger Helper, walked by my wife sleeping on the couch ... what else can I do? has it started without the connection up?

if it helps anyone, I tried everything using firefox to no avail, but as soon as i booted up IE it worked for me (knock on wood).

  12. I looked up the propaganda from that year and wasn't the point of the show to be exactly what you think is wrong? The point of the show, from what I could gather is "What would Dvorak write if he were in America today?" It's not like they just picked a random classical staple and then messed with it. There was a purpose to the modifications and as far as I can tell, it was done with respect to the composers style and wishes.

  13. Even fewer shows where I am.

The issue with bandwidth is not with how much material is stored and available, but rather how much is requested by the user and sent across the net. The reason they don't put up new shows is that each person will view the new shows once they are up. By keeping up just Annapolis, the amount of download requests will fall off until San Antonio. If they put Kalamazoo, it would stay high, until Allentown, until Atlanta, etc. The net usage would be much higher and never drop off, and their internet bill goes through the roof. It is clear many people do not understand how the internet works and what is meant by bandwidth.

Thanks for clearing that up for an old-timer

I understand what you are saying, BUT, (and I could be speaking outside of my comfort zone, I thought a C64 was the pinnacle of computing) if the encorps videos are limited to platinum members only, shouldn't (in theory) the max amount of bandwith be able to be calculated ahead of time and then paid for?

If DCI knows that X amount of people have memberships, then wouldn't it be simpler to reserve or buy or whatever the amount of bandwith that matches the amount of people that have access?

  14. I would prefer to go to the shows, however due to taking care of an elderly parent this summer that is not an option. In my mind $89 got me to at least be able to experience some drumcorps this summer. Things always seem so simple from your own position don't they, too bad we all don't have your personal ability to attend.

There are some areas in the country that don't have a voluminous amount of shows to attend.

Here's a thought. If bandwith is the issue with the encorps video .... could we possibly consider replacing the older shows when new material comes available? Sure, it'd be nice to see the changes week to week but I think a majority of the platinum members would rather see the most recent shows rather than shows from almost a month ago.

  15. Troopers "With all that being said, for a corps that was inactive last year and essentially falling apart the years prior to that, this group is doing outstanding. Their show is entertaining, albeit lacking in a lot of musicality, and will be a solid product by the end of the season."

Not to seem like i'm blindly in love with the Troopers(I'm not), but they soundly knocked off the Glassmen in brass last night (Well, as soundly as 4 tenths can seem). It's a good sign for them and shows where they have improved, and where they need to improve as the season goes on.

  16. Some of the atonal, or multi-tonal, or post-tonal, or post-nasal drip harmonic stuff in the Beethoven show last year. Glassmen? Well performed, members. But staff--it's Beethoven. He in fact was quite sane, just deaf as a post, and was still composing that stuff. You can't improve upon it.

Again--members, well-performed. And yes, I got it. I just didn't agree with what the staff did to the music.

Which parts are you referring to? The only *insert adjective*-tonal parts I remember was near the end when they did the whole deaf effect. I could be wrong, i only saw it at finals and once on a DVD ... ...... and I don't think the staff had much to do with the writing ... isn't that why the have Robert W. Smith as their arranger/composer?
