  1. Name almost any area of human achievement - basketball, skateboarding, computer code writing, dance, bowling, drum corps - and you'll find that in general, the performance level is constantly rising.

    Well, yes and no.

As one who has completed over 30 marathons and ultramarathons, I can provide an example:

Yes, the BEST performance level has gotten faster. Records broken aplenty.

No, the overall performance level has gotten slower. More people finishing marathons now at a slower average time.

  2. The Boston Crusaders parent organization, Inspire Arts & Music, is hosting an event during the 2014 DCI Championship Week in Indianapolis, IN.

"Street Beat 5k" will be held on Saturday, August 9th at 8:00am in Indianapolis.

By choosing which corps or local marching band you want to support, 50% of the proceeds go directly to that organization.

Can't find any info on either Inspire or BAC sites for this, and the FB link says not available. Did it get cancelled?

  3. clearly the spinning motion isn't that disorienting on this contest, since it's two nights in a row when the kid ran right to the flag

More entertaining if participants were selected from watering holes near the stadium. Now that would be a fair contest. Then again, the sausage race at Miller Park could be replicated at all TOC events. Betting windows too.

  4. You could hear him speaking the lines from the platform in DeKalb at the pre-show, when his mic wasn't working. He's not lip synching.

I happened to watch it occur with binoculars, and was pretty close. However, after the mic was "working", the delay of sound was so troubling, like a complete second. That's when I thought it was canned material. Stopped looking immediately after that.

So there seems to be credence to the back-up plan scenario mentioned.

  5. Couple pictures from Dekalb. Small Crown horn ensemble before the show, playing Flight of the Bumblebee. And the moon rising over the Cavies at the start of their show. Looked a lot more dramatic in real life, and seemed to echo the baleful red eye on the bass drums.

by the looks of this, I'd say you were very close to our seats. Good pics!! We were R20, #10-13 btw

  6. Did anyone else notice the drone flying around last night at the Dekalb show? I wonder if DCI was using it for footage for upcoming promo video's.

Yes, fun to watch. Waved at it. Hope it picked up our signs. The DCI Facebook score update had a picture from the North endzone balcony where the "pilot" was standing. My guess it is for DCI and not PR.

  7. Weather was perfect.

On field pre-show feature of PR Tubas doing a fun groove, followed by NIU student summer band, sans percussion with our National Anthem. Passed around some home-made detailed programs to neighbor seats. They were appreciative.

Blue Devils-so poised, confident. Opening hit amazing. Guard is ridiculously delivering IMO, amazing to see. The hornline definitely has a quality someone described as Wayne Downey returns to his earlier style. Very tight ensemble, really nice grooves. Visual was really crisp from our vantage. I agree with others who believe it is their championship to lose, the execution level already is scary good. There is so much complexity.

Coats-we were sporting support signs for Bloo tonight, and excited to see them right after BD, which honestly IMO affected the spreads. Super entertaining show, Hymn is so beautiful. I prefer they not do the fade on the pitch bend btw. I think drums might have had an off night. Now that I've seen it in person, the drill does look somewhat congested at times, but our seats were not super high up. Very enjoyable show, could hear this ALL day and not tire of it.

Blue Stars-it was hard for me to get by the first half of the show and the blue coverall-alls and lack of headgear. I know, movers don't usually wear hats, but even a baseball cap would have worked for me. Lumpy looking. Tough show position, and the pacing of the first 3 minutes makes you desire some power. Once that I happened, I was more engaged......until the singing. It was done fairly well, not my cup of tea for the activity. A finalist for sure, hornline had some nice moments, but some fatigue was noted as well.

    INT-30 minutes

Crown-slick. Hornline delivered big time tonight. Had only seen videos [not FN] and wondered how everything on field would read. So much cleaner than what I had seen online, even though seats not high up. Drums noticeably improved from last year. Some very cool effects in the production, but I tried to not watch the trampoline action except for when soloists were perched. Pacing to the muffler drumming seamed better than what I had seen. That hornline is so fun to hear. I just shake my head in awe. okay, yes I know there is singing as well-but as presented works, as I see it as 1. "pre-show" 2. electronically mixed/disguised a bit for effect setting up first hit.

Cadets-rough start with audio drop and soloist fracks. Hornline impressive, really seemed super inspired. Drumline played beautifully, my favorite tuning of the night. The color guard is enjoyable to watch. Would love to see this show without: narration, stage in front, screens, amplified gong. GH seemed to exit with hunched over pout, maybe it was the sandbag he was carrying. I like this show concept, and it is wonderful writing and performed excellently, just not my preference in method of delivery.

Cavaliers-drums and guard carrying them, some nice drill moments as well. Hornline still making its way. Marimba feature got expected response. Thunderous goo and other electronic contributions tainted my enjoyment honestly. I do not believe they will overtake Coats or SCV in the end, but this year has been incredible to see the competitiveness.

Phantom-GE & Visual did not do it for me tonight, BUT so much appreciated in person [& with changes] more-so than what I had seen online. Brass had a solid night I thought, soloist beautiful sound. Dark blend very nice. Hometown crowd, performing last I was expecting a bit more firepower, but perhaps recent edits are yet solidified to get that extra zip. It would not make sense with story line, but I'd like to see this once with no uniform change.........just once.

Agreed with the outcome placements, pretty obvious actually based on what we saw. Spreads? I thought Crown closer to Cadets tonight, but both a bit back from BD, who seemed stoked to go.

Drove home 200 miles, nothing compared to the performers headed to Warrensburg.

Will be interested to see tonight's TOC results, thus far a GREAT year of productions.

  8. Yeah but the TOC scores the last few years have been so consistently wacky and unreliable relative to the scores that come from normal shows and Saturday nights throughout the season. Shame that the first night everyone meets up competitors perform hours apart.

Kinda thought this to be the case, which is why I asked it from the get go. Looking forward to how BD sounds tonight in that first spot. Seats are in Row 20, so should get a decent read. With Bloo performing 2nd will get a nice compare, not as easy with the long wait for Crown and Cadets. Weather will be perfect. Time to drive now.......

  9. I'm surprised no one has corrected you yet; don't they all meet in San Antonio and again in Atlanta before Allentown? Even in Allentown they are split between performing Friday and Saturday night. So when they do actually meet your placements might be off just a tad bit.

    Fan of the Arts

Thought it was TOC Dekalb, well at least the four he listed

  10. Yes, it's only Wednesday, but will be very interested in Sunday's Dekalb TOC Show for at least a few reasons:

    1. Haven't been to a show in two summers

    2. Fatty's Pub & Grill is very close to the Stadium

    3. By then, Bloo, Crown, & Cadets will have met 7 times

    4. I believe it will be the first time those three meet with BD at a show this season

    5. The performance order:

    BD-Bloo-BS-[int]-Crown-Cadets-Cav-PR

    6. Entire family on board!

For those more in the know with TOC shows: Have the panels/scoring shown any quirks compared to other non "G-7" shows?

    Now until Sunday:

Cadets & PR have 3 shows

BD and Bloo have 2 shows

    Crown/BS/Cav have 1 show

  11. 2010 PR was not abstract IMO, but the specific story of Southwest Native Americans. "The title of the album is quoted from an Iroquai Indian who Kamen met as a little boy and symbolizes "a glimpse of the future in the light of the past." As a committed humanist and a devotee to the American Indian, Kamen chose to mark the new millennium with a symphony that tells a story about the past that makes us consider the future with a message of compassion and humanity."

This is the programming I prefer, but also enjoy other "story" shows as my taste leans. Was Florida Suite by SS among this category? That's another discussion......

I want every story told instrumentally & visually, not vocally.

  12. BITD several sites hosted a Music Festival that included three competitive components: a concert band/wind ensemble, a parade band, a field show. I fondly remember preparations for each, even making sure our uniforms were perfect for inspection, yes part of the competition! Many summer units were "all-ages" and quite fine i.e. CYO groups and Tremper Summer Band. This circuit also included NE Illinois stops such as Dundee, Plainfield etc. The drums corps influence was prominent during this era: mid to late 70's.

  13. 1. They are all brass & percussion ensembles [ok, synths too] with VERY similar instrumentation.

    2. They all employ essentially the same keyed brass.

    3. Power chord orchestrations are quite similar.

    4. Performers are well trained and in excellent shape at the time of the audio/video.

I'm sure there are other attributes, just a quick few off the top of my head.

    Thanks for sharing link!

Bold choice. Assume that the jacket back is solid white? I personally would prefer that the front sash continue to a point on left high hip. Are the chin straps gonna go under jaw or not?

Marching technique will not be disguised. Will not get a chance to see them live this year unfortunately. Best of luck MYNWA.
