  1. I dug it my man. I'm hip.

It was my pleasure, I wish DCI could pick a bigger venue for the "St Louis" show (i use quotes because the venue is about 30mins outside of the Lou). I know there are bigger places around town to get more people in. ....

I couldn't agree more! I stopped taking students to this venue because of the low congested seating. They love the sound, precision, et al, but miss out on so much visual GE. I would order premium seats each time and it just doesn't help. Mckendree College is a great host, but it just doesn't have the stadium for the event, which I believe could attract so many more if held at a Metro location. Surely it is a difficult task to book these events, I'm just hoping what you suggest Tony happens!!!

  2. This 'corporate sponsorship' idea has already been tried and failed. Want proof? Ask the CEO of Circle-K if sponsoring Suncoast Sound Drum & Bugle Corps worked for either the corps or the company; ask the CEO of Knights Inn if that company was able to survive by sponsoring The Knights Drum & Bugle Corps. The answer is absolutely NO! However, what might possibly work is if the parent 501c3 of a corps owns their own for-profit business, say a fast-food franchise, and then funnels any profit from that business into the corps. Star did this with owning an aircraft fueling depot at an airport.

This reminded me of The Railmen. Recall seeing them at a good number of DCM shows in the late 80's.

  3. Because this is a public school supported [i'm assuming] by local taxpayers, each feels he/she can scrutinize use of those funds including the theme of a marching ensemble.

I would guess that the New Oxford community would not object to a number of "controversial" American themes however.....

at least the one person who called Fox news would be satisfied.

Guess the band staff there will be getting pre-approval in the future.

  4. If you've never heard the original recording of Interstellar Suite by Amin Bhatia, you are missing out on some really fun stuff. Amin is remixing the album to 5.1 surround and it should be very cool. Check it out: http://www.indiegogo.com/is25?contribution_success=true&pledge_id=1079686&a=1221645

And I think it's time another Div 1 corps tackle this piece. Crown? Cadets? Lots of technical demand for the horns and some great melodies.

only one acoustic instrument, I believe on the disc=crash cymbals.

my disc is worn thin from 25 years of play.....

  5. A bit longer- I remember going to their practices when I was VERY little. My dad knew all the staff and I think helped to some degree also

Ok, can't remember the name of that 2nd tune in the show. Played it in jazz band back in the late 70's.........help!!!

    GREAT video for us!

  6. Is the ending one of their changes? Because I saw the most recent fannetwork. The last minute is terrible... The drill is 1 dimensional. Play, move up, play, move up spin, play and move up... Compared to last years ending that got people up on their feet this one is just lacking in GE completely!

Also, it's such a slow ending, no velocity. Like the ending for the Cadets in 2010.

And just not be such a debbie downer. I do think the first half of the show works pretty well. even the ballad I think is starting to really come to together.

But in general, maybe its just me, but the drill seems "thin" overall... not sure any other way to put it.

Just got home from watching full ensemble rehearsal & a run through [minus preshow]

Agree with your assessment of the ending, as well as the goo underneath the drum feature mentioned earlier.

  7. TOC should be moved

    SOS should stay at boylan

    yep.

Since Music for All left Normal Il for Muncie [ball State] last year, a great DCI venue has gone unused.

Don't know the ins/outs of getting a show back there, but my guess is it would be well attended this week of the season.

All the amenities were fan and corps friendly.

  8. DCI once again returns to "St Louis" (i use quotes 'cause Lebanon is nearly a half hour away from the lou). The St Louis area has had a rich drum corps history in the past. Expecting a near sellout for the 2nd year in a row, hopefully DCI will try to get a bigger venue for '13. The fans in the area (lots of former Drum Corps people) will be in for a treat.

So, sit back...grab a pork steak, some toasted ravs, and a Schlafley (or AB Product or Vess) and enjoy some Drum Corps, St. Louis style.

very low stands, jammed seating, will be toasty.

    good stuff http://schlafly.com/#

  9. I'm going to take this into a writers view.

    The dot system:

If everybody takes an EQUAL size step in a straight path to their dot, then drill happens. It's more then knowing your endpoint, it's knowing your individual responsibility for that set.

Sometimes, the style of drill will dictate this choice since not all designers write in a style that is appropriate for that.

However, curvilinear paths and adjusted pacing is also part of many visual programs. I guess that is part of knowing one's responsibility for the set [form].

  10. Even that is very flawed. Look at 2012: Cavies first to break 85 on July 16th in Minneapolis with an 87.35, a whole 1.5 points ahead of the pack. Four weeks later at finals, Cavies ended up in 3rd, a full 1.5 points behind the first place Cadets.

I suspect what I said was not clear. My score threshold 85 and date refer only to the cavaliers [their progress], not the spread OF that score relative to others at that time. The only reference to other corps scores was at finals, iow the last score posted by the Cavaliers.

    Hope that makes more sense.

  11. I have been in and around this activity for a while. Long enough to tell you that the spreads, the scores, the placements (for the most part) don't matter early season. They just don't. If the cavaliers are still struggling mid July, then lets talk.

Yes, this is what seems to be the approach I take on "predicting" [if you will] a corps season each year. For me, I like to look at the point in time when the 85 point barrier is broken. In racing, you can't make your move so late in the race that you run out of territory [distance].

In 2002 The Cavaliers met that score 6/30, went undefeated that year. In years when that score was met significantly later, such as a month later-their final placements tend to be 4th, 5th, 7th ['94, '88, '97].

So, I will see when this year's product arrives at that break point and watch the head to head match ups.

I dunno, that's how I like to do it anyway.

  12. reason why i ask is the scores were interesting last night, major jumps and some drops

I, too await said captions. I liked this show [attended] for two reasons: the timing after MN, and the distance to the end of the season. Believe that the Rockford show & this one could possibly provide a lens as to what staffs are doing for the push/possible unveiling of tweaks. New tweaks could be rusty initially and have potential all the same, no?

Plus, any chance I have to see SCV within a drive-able distance is always worth the price of admission, right?

I do sense some of the PR dilemma though, ya know holding onto a musical philosophy midst a visual theatrical presentation in which innovation & "cutting edge" appear to both garner support as well as competitive reward.

Even those versed in the activity would have to admit that the annual "soul-searching" with regard to design is both exhilarating as well as angst filled.

And yet they perform. Every year.

    Very competently I might add.

    Lucky for us, no?

  13. *NEWSFLASH*

The tricycle being used to deliver the Lebanon recaps has developed a mechanical failure and is being pulled out of service. An emergency response team is being dispatched and should arrive in the not-to-distant future. A witness to the incident sent this photo of the vehicle.

    tricycle+for+blog.JPG

it must be related to a postal confusion, in that the event was named DCI St. Louis yet was in a small Illinois town with an astro field on a private college campus.

enjoyed the show!! wanting recaps though!!!

if DCI returns to St. Louis, let's hope a larger venue with some height to the stands can be found. Anyone know a spot? One of the Parkway schools?? just thinking.

volunteers and hosts did great, but that field...........you could ALMOST see the lines. lol

  14. Can someone with a longer history fill me in? A double line graph showing their scores for last year and this year would be helpful.... :winky:

I love the scoring info supplied by The Blue Knights homepage. Go to Scores tab and you will find last year's scores and may compare to this years-even by caption if you desire.

Best of luck to your corps!!

for example: July 10, 2010 show:

  15. I usually attend shows having @ 8 corps performing, with 5 "headliners". Usually pony up enough dough to get Good seats, but not the premium. For example: next up DCI St. Louis and spent $35 per ticket [not counting fees].

Would I pay this ticket price for just the 5? Yes, if the venue was what I consider to be top notch.

For a show with no "headliners", I would pay the same price if it was still @ 8 corps at a decent venue.
