  1. I'm not arguing that you are stating something that is false because I'm sure it does happen; however, it's pretty obvious that a lot of corps do NOT cut based solely on body type and appearance. One has to wonder how many injuries over the last few years have been due to a lack of physical conditioning in the off the season. I can imagine that some corps cut applicants who are clearly not taking off-season physical training seriously enough to make them ready for what the designers are putting together.

my wife has often commented when we have attended July shows in the midwest in the heat: "how can a person in that soft condition/body frame still be that way after all the intense hours?"

I told her they must have a strong heart.

  2. I want to comment to the person who mentioned the alumni back east not being happy about the move and the changes:

Where were you after you aged out?

There are lots of Crossmen alumni who know me; in fact, most of the Crossmen alumni association. That goes to prove the collection of people who call themselves the CAA is way too small. And trust me, their pockets are showing wear...

I have been working for the corps since 2006, and have been the "face" of the drum corps since 2007 when I took the souvenir manager job. I see lots of people at shows. I talk to lots of people at shows. There is no shortage of alumni who come up to me to complain that the Texas folk "took their corps away." And to all of those people I ask the above question: where were you? I have gone to every CAA fundraising event since 2006. I haven't seen many new faces. I haven't seen many new names on the list of donors to the corps. Where were you guys when the corps needed you? Oh, wait, I know where you were. Somewhere trying to blame it on George Hopkins. I don't like the guy, either, but he saved the corps by letting people who actually had their ducks in a row take them over.

So please, stop whining, and join your alumni association. The corps still needs you. You are still their history. Come out to a camp and volunteer. Meet some kids; talk to them. They will be so elated to see you care about them. They will ask you questions, and pick your brain...I guarantee a fulfilling experience.

This is how we get the Crossmen back into finals, people. Unity. There is no magic fix.

quite a post for your first. Bravo

  3. We are from Illinois and our school is the first in the State to start which is next Tuesday, August 10th. ...Whatever happened to summer?!

    That's early!

We're also in Illinois, & my sons' school starts the 18th and I thought THAT was early.

They have both been in camp this week and next, as you know in 110 heat indix......

I'd be interested to know your school's name.

  4. Two comments:

As an endurance athlete who has completed 20 marathons and some Ultras, I can add that protein supplements are vital over the long haul. The biggest benefit IMO is that it allows you to repair tissue so that you may do subsequent work the following day. In fact, I just consumed a protein shake following a 90 degree mid-day 10 mile workout & know I'll be able to do it again tomorrow.

Second: Both my wife & I are amazed at how much weight many MM carry. One would think that the hard work and long hours would trim the physiques to a greater degree.

Bottom line-both cardio & muscle exercise necessary, and Protein is vital for lean muscle mass development.

Know that many visual staff emphasize flexibility as well. Agree that a stronger/healthier MM will perform better.

  5. are relatively large people in Spirit or Teal Sound because they can still keep up, although it may be very difficult. It just isn't possible for overweight members to march BD, Cadets, and Crown, so they don't. They know it, the staff knows it. The Cadets are more likely to take on a third sop who isn't the hottest player but can handle their program than a 240lb, 5'5" lead bari with mad chops and a twelve-minute mile.

All the shows my wife & I attend, she asks how members that maintain such a demanding schedule STILL display flabby physiques.

I say: slow metabolism. and they're good eaters.

  6. Have spent 6 hour days watching:

Crossmen, Cavaliers, BAC, Bluecoats, SCV, Colts.

Full ensemble was intriguing because of staff input over the PA and ability to observe performer demeanor/poise/reaction.

    Sectionals were so so

Full horn line stuff was great. Wish tuning was addressed more.

SCV was by far, the most rewarding for me.

Enjoyed talking to members during breaks. That was '08. I firmly believed then, and still that this corps is on the move up and last year's classy show has set the table for a top 3 this year.

  7. well, guessing that you are trying to address the top 12, probably more specifically top 6:

    I'll guess a)=PR; b) thanks=Cav c)=BD d)=Cadets e)=SCV f)=thanks Madison

    Outside shot:

    a)=Colts & c)=Bluecoats

That's what I think, but I didn't start listening to corps till the 70's.

  8. About a dozen at our Central Il site. After too low of volume at the same theater for the previous Fathom DCI offering, I made sure to be well-lubricated and told the manager before the show that the volume needed to be up.

Boy was it!!! Almost too much!!!!! But love the improved viewing.

    Left immediately after BD's performance.

    Crown's sound is amazing.

    SCV is soooooo classy.

Worth the ten minute drive and ticket price.

    NO complaints, all enjoyment.

  9. It would be a mute, unrelated point mind you.....

but what would be the visual caption score comparison of Star's Championship and this year's BD? '91 recaps anyone?

    almost a 20 year perspective I suppose.

    change in viewpoint scoring-wise.

interesting topic, hard to debate absoluteness of a visual demand versus musical demand versus combined.
