  1. Terri:

Our audio sucked. Your description sounds like our experience, although I only asked at the beginning once. Having attended the same theater for the Fan Vote 6 thingy, I knew it was coming.

When the broadcast played the historic clips, the sound was 10X better!!!!

You are correct-an audio specialist is needed for events such as these, and I don't trust our theater [the only one close that does these type of broadcasts] to get it right, so won't ever go to their MET Opera offerings.

    Live yes.

    Loud no.

    subwoofer overbalance yes.

did I still enjoy it? yes-just wanted it to be a great sound.

  2. Gotch-ya :thumbup::thumbup: You guys are ridiculous and are so ready to pounce and flame away on just about anyone that comes in here. It is truly amazing.

I know that a slide whistle is not percussive.....it's a sound effect instrument, but I through the bait and all of you took it. However, none of you substantiated your answers, but rather made fun of my fictictional one provided earlier. Anyway, you will find the slide whistle mostly used in the percussion section, since everyone else is blowing on something else.

Anyway to the person who wanted to know what my masters was in.....It is wind conducting from Western Illinois University. Studied under Dr. John Dugle and Michael Fansler. In addition, I also studied with Ray Kramer and Dr. Lowell Graham. Any more questions? Would you like a copy of my degree? Or better yet, would you like a copy of my curriculum vitae or resume, which ever you want?

Me thinks you have brought dishonor to that institution by this. A true leatherneck you are not.

Yes, we all know how smart you are now.

  3. Good topic. I do sense that adjudication has changed the stylistic idioms that are deemed competitive. I disagree with beford that no one has ever been able to swing-many will provide examples.

Post #50 is a good one. Seems to indicate how either adjudicators and/or audiences are not as "stimulated" by those compositions requiring longer times to develop. Personally, I prefer shows ie. '03 Bluecoats that have nice harmonic/melodic/groove developments. Crossmen that year playing McConnell etc.

As an "older" performing musician & educator-I can appreciate the distinction of "seasoned" jazz artists, BUT-do not sell our youth so short!! I 've taught and played with some incredibly stylistically-seasoned jazz artists that if you put behind a curtain would pass for a recorded veteran. Part of the problem for a corps wishing to do a "jazz" theme is attracting those with this type of already developed technique/feel/maturity. In masses!

Finally, the clouded label of jazz istelf. I think we all can agree on the diversity within the genre, and how drum corps has "adapted" many within it to "work" for it's genre. I dare say that most jazz utilizations in DCI have utilized large group literature as opposed to combos.

All the great Big Bands and writers have provided such a wealth of literature through the years. And their are SO many newer charts that would KILL on the field. But will they get a chance?

Who knows, maybe next year we'll hear several corps renditions of "Indiana [back Home In]"?

  4. well, i might.

    get this

I used the "find theaters by zipcode" engine and it returned stuff a a fair distance away. That was on the DCI site.

When I used the Fathom site, lo and behold, LOTS of theaters MUCH closer.

I wonder how many people will opt out simply because DCI's engine is poor.

I e-mailed DCI. We'll see if they respond as they say they will-within 18/24 hours.

  5. Good post Ryan.

I'm sure the staff of Pioneer discusses with their performers all the purposes of their organization and the reality of competition. They probably adjust these discussions based upon other corps with whom they choose to compete any given summer.

Look back just four years at the names of the 10 or 11 groups that they saw on tour. Seems to have changed quite a bit to me.

  6. So what's going on with the Colts - they came out of the gate in June in a good position...and within the last week or so, their scores aren't going anywhere and they are getting passed by many corps.

I think the LA show was the first with the new closer & opener rewrites, so performance might be a bit under rep scorewise. Just my guess.

San Antonio might be a better indication/restablishment of their good position.

  7. You act like it's complete random chance that the semis winner won in the first place.

    It's not at all.

They win semis because they have the best balance of demand and performance.

And when you're up to that caliber(say 5 months of rehearsing the same exact thing for hours upon hours a day) it's not crazy at all to believe that they can replicate a performance, or even better that previous performance.

So, no, it's not an anomaly at all.

I agree. Furthermore, as a performing musician-has it not always been a goal to have repeat performances of a high calibre?

The mindset-at least as I understand it after 35 years of performance-is to perform something correctly/successfully so many times that it becomes rare to not perform that piece that way.

Hey, we all have "off" nights, but through diligence it is a rarity.

  8. For me it would have to be because fewer marching members are involved. A typical battery has what...9 snares, 5 tenors, 5 basses? A total of 19 players, versus 64+ brass players.

Do not forget those many awesome cymbal lines that have marched!!! SCV is tops.

If we're going to do original music in corps, let's do it right. Someone scrape together some money and commission John Corigliano, or John Adams or John Mackey or Jon Newman (holy hell, why is everyone named John?) to do a marching band show. I assume that it is written on a computer program...are there free ones out there?

Oops, marching band or drum corps??

Most composers use computer notation, simple ones can be found, but Sibelius is used more than not.

  9. Just curious....cause I really don't know.

What exactly do you guard the flag with? ....and just who out there wants to take it anyway? Al Qaeda

The Troopers DM has always been bad### in my opinion

Back in the 70's there was a group from Dakota, IL that guarded the stars & stripes with bow & arrow. And they usually were some hot gals ta boot!! I mean mocassins, sorry.
