  1. This is a tough one... but I think the answer is yes. The thing about Cavies this year is that they really don't have any weaknesses. Crown has a lot of strengths, but their weaknesses in guard and percussion, things that most people probably won't notice if they're not looking for it, are apparent. I still love Crown this year and hope they give Cavies a run for their money, but I do think that at this point, Cavies have done a much better job of covering all their bases, and that's where the 1.4 comes from. I still agree that Crown as the best brass so far this season.

I disagree. Crown doesn't have a weakness in guard and percussion. Just because two boneheaded judges gave them sixth, doesn't mean a thing at this point. They apparently didn't get the memo, that Crown is for real across the board. I'd suggest everyone look and listen with their own eyes and ears and report back. There's NO WAY Crown was sixth in anything in MN.

  2. Am I missing something??????

How the heck can Crown end up 6th in guard tonight - that is a travesty. They were clearly one of the top 2 guards out there in content and cleanliness - are you kidding me!!!!!!!

    Later,

    Mike

Totally agree. No way are they sixth in anything.

  3. The ethical thing to do *is* to run it like a business. if not, you probably won't have a business (corps) to run for very long. Most of the corps failures of the last 40 years were because they weren't run like a business.

I don't understand your position. Would a business (Corps) send the kid packing? Or would a business (Corps) keep the young person involved on board? Car breakdown or not. Of course there are variables that we don't know about. IMO, you're trying to paint this situation with a broad political brush, and it simply doesn't work.

  4. It's hard to go from 16th to top 12, despite the big jumps in placement you have seen from Madison.

This is probably going to be a multiyear process. In another thread someone said the average age was 17. Well, if these kids stay, with this staff that is designing entertaining and quality shows, the Crossmen will be back. In terms of entertaining shows, they are back this year. No doubt. I would look for Crossmen to be right on the edge (with a good chance to make Saturday) next year, and keep the momentum up in 2013. Timeline could be pushed up a year, but it remains to be seen how this year will shakeout.

If they can make Saturday night this year, the turnaround will be way ahead of schedule, IMO. Just kick back and enjoy the show; appreciate the hard work and the return of the Crossmen groove.

Agree completely that this is the most important thing.

Bones is back, even if this is a multi-year process. I doubt they make the Saturday night show, but they will be very close.

  5. Oh sure, this makes a lot of sense.Judges can adequately compare and contrast Corps more than 3 hours removed from one another in performance competition, especially with all Age Corps performing in the middle.

Brilliant, huh ? By the time the Glassmen come on, theres no way the judges can adequately remenber what the Crossmen did after the All Age Corps come on, and more than 3 hours later to boot.

You make a good point. However, the judges will remember, and will score appropriately and accordingly. At least I hope so.

  6. I still think SCV is a real contender for 5th, maybe 4th if they get their show REALLY clean and add a bunch of stuff to enhance the story line.

I haven't seen SCV live, so I don't want to be unfair or biased. But based on what I've seen on FN and in person, the Vanguard has a long haul to catch the top four.

  7. And I'm not saying Crown's show is less difficult than the 3 above them, I'm saying that the corps above them are too competitive right now

IMO, the whole premise that there are "three above them", is false. I'm basing this on Crown's last head to head meeting with Cavaliers and the resulting .9 tenths spread. I was at the Bowling Green show, and I'm telling you, Crown connected big time with the audience (and apparently some of the judges). We'll see how it all shakes out Saturday night, but right now, I think their total package is as good as anyone's.

  8. Ok, but what else can you add to Crown's show without it being overdone??

A new ending. Which may or may not put them over the top. Don't get me wrong, BD, Cavaliers, and Cadets are all formidable, with great staffs who know what to do. But IMO, from a programing standpoint, Crown is solidly in there with them with perhaps, the best complete package.

  9. I respect your opinion there, I haven't seen their show since Texas, and they really do have a great sound, hence why I thought right off the bat they probably have the best sound overall. As far as visual, I don't know. I will give them another chance on that if I am able to catch their show in Minneapolis, but I still believe that the 3 corps above them are out on a mission, and Crown has not been invited to this shoot-out. I am not saying Crown has a bad show, quite the contrary - I like this show a lot better than last years, but I don't think it is as good a show as 09. I just think the reason they will stay out of the top 3 is because of the corps above them, not because of themselves.

When I look at the other three, I don't see any one program that really stands out, or that is bringing anything new to the table. Cavaliers are somewhat esoteric, gimmicky, and segmented. Cadets and BD are both very good, but don't strike me as having that something special, that makes a winner. Crown may just have the best total package this year. And, Crown was only .9 off the Cavaliers in Toledo, beating them in three captions. IMO, this is a four way race, with Crown having an excellent chance.

  10. There is no way Crown is going to medal this year. Not with this show.

Musically, they may very well have a shot at taking the Brass title...but they are not going to beat Blue Devils, Cadets AND Cavaliers with the shows that these 3 corps are doing, plus the fact that the Blue Devils have a title to defend, and both the Cadets and Cavs are starving for a title.

Nice show, good crowd pleaser, but not this year either, Crown.

Maybe next year they could have a show full of 4th symphonies and call it "A 4th Chance"?

Bruckner's 4th is a very good 4th symphony, and Beethoven's 4th is my favorite Beethoven symphony. Mahler's 4th movt 3 might make a good power ballad.

Totally disagree. Crown may very well have the best total package on the field this year, and a chance to make history.
