Wouldn't mind hearing those two old chestnuts again.  Maybe Hawthorne's Alumni corps will get Larry Kerchner to pen a chart for them.

    Oh, good catch.

However, what camel lips said is that 7th had "become" the standard international placement. Since Kidsgrove placed 6th in  2010 and 2015, that's arguable.

Still, you're absolutely right that overseas corps have twice placed 7th.

    "Southern Knights":

WAAAAAAAYYYYYY  back in 1990, an UK corps called "Southern Knights" made the trip over the pond to take in DCA.  They were in a show in Connecticut prior to the Championship and achieved a 82  + (12the place) in DCA Prelims, not enough to qualify for Finals.

I don't remember if they were designated an "International Champ" or not.  Anybody out there have a clue?????

Joe has moved on from being chief of Bridgeport who now has a different mayor. You may google this yourself.

This allowed Joe extra time to participate in the SCV Alumni doings for the jubilee year appearances. When he aged out of SCV, he was a great tech at Cadets where we served together. Great guy.

    "Moved On":

Did not know he had left.  Thanks for the info.  Joe had marched with Park City Pride Alumni at the begining of the corps run.  Last trip we were able to make "Back Home", he was still Top Cop.

    Thanks again.

I agree, I think there was some sort of "limit the number of last-minute additions" rule at one point, but that rule is long gone.  And the "adding members" thing goes back many, many years.

My days marching DCA... late 1970s-early 1980s... we had at least a couple of occasions when someone came off DCI tour and filled a spot for us down the home stretch.

One of the people had marched with us, went to a DCI corps for a couple of years, aged out, then rejoined us for the DCA home stretch in 1981 and a full season the next year.

Also in 1981, the Hurricanes had a guy who won the DCI title with SCV that summer, then was with the Hurcs for the end of the DCA season, and won a DCA title with them!!! Not a bad summer, at all!!!

    "Not a Bad Summer":

The person mentioned as a member of the DCI and DCA 1981  Champion is also now the Chief of Police in Bridgeport.   His Dad (Also a Bridgeport cop) was a snare drummer for the old Stratford Yankees and Bridgeport Troopers senior corps as well as a drum instructor for two of our cross town rivals, the olde St Raphael's Buccaneers and PAL Cadets.

The Boys were the first Midwestern corps to make DCA Finals, in 1970. A pioneer.

Then MBI began making the trek in the 1970s, and then again from the mid-80s on. They took their lumps for a while (remember the old "MIdwest Penalty"???  LOL)... then gradually began to kick the door down!!!

I remember reading about those DCM shows, and wishing the Govies would someday come East. I'm glad they finally did.

    "Skokie Indians":

WAAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY "Back in the day " the MidWest had a "Threepeat" Legion National Champ in the form of the old Skokie Indians.  They beat the best seniors of the day 1955-57 for the "Orange Flag", and their streak was only stopped by Hawthorne in 1958.

They became the "Men of Brass" senior corps in the mid 1960's and did try to mix it up with the early DCA pack, sadly without much success.

Les Diplomates...one of my favorite corps of all time!

Those people were light years ahead of everybody in the GE category when I competed with them in the Sunrisers.  We absolutely loved those guys, and the gorgeous gals as well.

Canadian corps always had a joi de vivre that electrified audiences, and the Dips were the epitome of that. My hat is off to hem to this day.

If you're old, I'm a fossil. "Ever" is a long time, even in drum corps. Bonnie Ott and Barbara Maroney have a lock on the "modern" era for me, but if you've never heard Tommy Martin on "I loves You Porgy" with the '62 Air Force Corps or on "Street Scene" with the Skyliners thereafter, you'd be rewarded for doing the research.

    "Dinosaur & Fossils"

Can't leave out baritone legends Billy Hightower  (Who marched with Ironlips in St Catherine's and the LI Sunrisers), and his fab solo's in "Tin Roof Blues, Black Bottom and Sing  Sing Sing",  as well as AirForceMan John Simpson, and his "Summertime" solo (Along with Tommy Martin) and the legendary Simpson  "Rhapsody in Blue" indie solo which is on the  flip side of the Fleetwood  Skyliner "Portrait on Brass" record.

Soprano legend Tommy Martin also solo's on thst old Fleetwood disc with "You made me love you", and his tripple tounging feature.

What is even more legendary is the fact that  these guys achieved what they did playing on the 1960's Getzen GD Valve/slide BUGLES, and they required NO AMPLIFICATION!!!!!!!!

All of this great legendary talent can be found on the Fleetwood remakes CD's, "Brass by Night"  the Skyliner 1962 concert  recoriding and the Air Force Disc.

    Enjoy       :guinesssmilie:

On the emotional side I am with ya.  But on the practical side what era and what rules do you propose to honor during the anniversary? 1972? 1984? 1995? I ask because if your beef is amps and electronics, there are others with beefs about Bb brass, with beefs about number of valves, with beefs about grounded percussion, with beefs about 150 not 120 on the field, with beefs with about build up scoring as opposed to tics, ... So, which era rules do propose DCI to use for the anniversary year?

I don't know . . . . those old Hy Dreitzer-arranged, New York Skyliners lines were rather stunning to say the least.

    "Hy Drietzer":

The late great and much missed Mr Drietzer was our arranger-instructor "Back in the Day"  (65-66) and is on record as stating that he didn't care how many valves were put on the old "G" bugles but that the horn itself should be kept in "G" as that was the identity of drum corps.  The man knew a thing or two about drum corps arranging, and the high brass award at DCA Finals is named in his memory.

Those "G" hornlines and their soloists needed no 'amplification' or staging.   Hawthorne's alumni corps, the Skyliner alumni,  Boston Crusaders seniors,  Hanover Lancers  and others are doing a rather good job of "Projection" without the use of microphones.......

It's time for him to retire. He has too much influence over staff, design and he's obviously past his prime in those areas. So much talent staff out there and even his current staff would be better able to produce without his constant presence and forced input. Cadets need a new independent BOD preferably with talent in finance, a new Cadets director with control of selecting staff but allowing design team to design. DIRECTORS DONT DESIGN.

I guarantee, if above occurs, many former staff would consider coming back if that's a road we would want to consider. Most are alumni and true Cadets and want nothing more than to have the corps competitively successful again.

Nice review! Enjoyable to read. Thanks for taking the time to put this together. I have a question . . .

Did you notice what you believed to be an overuse of electronic amplification?

Over on the DCI side, there is a heated discussion of corps taking the electronics too far. Beyond what was the original intent. Evidently, Phantom Regiment is sending their entire horn line through a series of 8 sideline mics their corps has placed there for their own use. I've seen those mics, haven't seen Phantom Regiment in person. However, during the telecast, Phantom's overall sound sounded "juiced" at all times.

I am VERY much against using mics on more than just a soloist, or small ensemble, to make one's corps appear to be something it is NOT.  Couple years ago, I noticed corps beefing-up (through deep electronic instrument-created bottom sounds) the final few measures of their tunes, making the finish appear to be handled by 50 baritones and tubas. I felt cheated in some way. It was all a little too "fake" for me. I became concerned smaller brass lines will now simply "raise the dial position" to WOW us. I find that prospect disgusting. Something that will drive me away from the whole thing, actually.

So, again I ask, do you sense some corps are abusing the use of electronics, and do you also find that off-putting?

    Others please comment, too!

    "Techno Terrors":

If the activity had stayed with the G BUGLES they wouldn't NEED any of this.  I never knew any of the old super soloists (WAY too many mention) needing to be "Amped".     :music:
