i'm not exactly the greatest teacher ever, but when i first learned brass (not that long ago), my instructor had me play an open fingering. and whichever came out (c or g) was the pitch that i started on. that's all the advice i really have. i didn't learn to play a brass instrument until 2 years ago, after i'd already played flute for almost nine years. good luck! *mello love*
