This is a great idea! I haven't seen a small corps take on a fundraiser like this before, good for them!

    I know I'll be buying a few!

  2. Yeah, change is good, except the Div. II corps that made finals in '04 is a different line up than '05 so it was already a change. Nothing was guaranteed by only having 9 corps attend finals except "Semis", Grand Finalst had to be worked at for all 9 corps - it wasn't handed to anyone based on only 9 showing up.

    <**>

The point I was trying to make was over the past 5 years, 2 years had 9 D2 corps, 2 years had 10 D2 corps, and one of those years, I think the international rule was in effect so all 10 of the d2's went to finals and 1 year had 12 corps.

It's going to be nice to see more than than the "usual amount". More corps in ALL divisions is a great thing!

  3. But the fewer people you take, the fewer people will get to experience and grow from what drum corps is all about. Revolution got ALOT of people at their audition camp. They may not be as strong as a division 2 corps as they could be a division 3 corps. But the people that were in that corps will come back for the next season, and the next season, becoming much better musicians and performers(drum corps' top priority). If revo goes div 2 this year, they will find themselves with a much stronger foot hold (score wise, drum corps' second priority) than they would if they go div 2 in a couple years.

Do you think a corps would turn people away to stay in Div 3????????

  4. This is one place where DCI might turn some of its attention. The problem is that DCI is already supporting Div 2/3 around 40K a year and would like 2/3 to break even.

There have been several success stories. The Academy, Memphis Sound, Impluse all have been upstarts lately and done well. Mystical and Spokane Thunder seem to be on solid footing. There are many good models to follow. The Canos, after folding late last year seem to be doing rather well this year. Mystical and The Academy are making their first trips to finals in 2006

Small corps like the Colts Cadets, Vanguard Cadets, and BD B and C seem to do well. Look at the rise of the Oregon Crusaders and the perennial success of East Coast Jazz and Jersey Surf. The Raiders after winning Div III with no DM kept their staff intact. I don't think you have to look very far for good models.

Unfortunately, you don't have to look very far for bad models either.

It is difficult to start a drum corps. It takes some money and lots of good management, a great staff, and GUTS. Outstanding fundraising and an attitude that says we will never point fingers and fail. No bingo money, find other ways to raise money (you cannot have bingo in Indiana unless you have been a non-profit for 5 years). Many excellent drum corps people will help start a corps. Find a way. Bring out the best in the staff and the kids. Impulse just started paying their staff.

There is a book title "Do What you Love and the Money will Follow". A great book. But the title says everything you need to know. You have to love it enough to work a 2nd or 3rd job in the early years. You have to be unafraid to ask for money from generous people and must recruit everyday and all the time.

When at the DCI meeting in September in Chicago, I heard many of the Div 2/3 corps who now inactive complain and point fingers at DCI, donors, and even DCM. That attitude will never fly. What you expect of the kids to overcome and be the very best they can you must demand of yourself and staff. Keep expenses small. Memphis Sound started with Jupiter marching brass. The cheapest they could buy. They have replaced those horns, but for years those kids gave everything they had from the very bottom of their marching shoes and the horns held them back just a bit. But I love to watch Memphis Sound. Watch out for them in 2006 with their new staff and the same positive attitude.

What about The Academy? Excellence in fundraising and all things from the very beginning. Their board raised tons of money without complaint. Haven't they been undefeated in two years?? But more importantly, they are very financially sound. Impulse is financially sound enough they bought new instruments last year and hired staff this year.

Look at the Blue Stars moving back up through the ranks and back into Div I by giving no excuses and moving forward.

    Lots of good examples.

    Jim

It's obvious that ANY organization would be lucky to have Jim invovled with thier corps. I think it's great to see him take to task the people involved for the dimise of this corps. The last thing people want is to be held accountable when screw up. Don't let up Jim, find out what is going on, ask where the monies went, where the equipment is, don't let anyone get away with anything!

  5. I was watching some DCI dvd's over the weekend and I have to ask.........What in the world happened to Premier Drums???

At one point, it looked like they were the next big drum company. I've always enjoyed to sound the HTS tenors made, I even bought a pair on ebay last year.

Can you honestly say that Dynasty makes a Better drum or a Better Snare than Premier?

I see One Division 2 corps using them, and I think 2 Open Class DCI corps, plus a DCA corps and some WGI lines. I may be wrong with the count, but I know it's not what they used to be.

  6. that was while he was assitant director/brass caption head/arranger before the corps made some decisions behind his back and he parted company with them

Yep, totally aware of that, I have no problem with Doc Fox, just making a general statement about many corps that spend the off season talking about of what mostly turns out to be alot of nothing.

  7. From what I know...which is everything. The Executive Director has excepted a job in Washington for the next 6 months. Hypnotix will continue in operation with the indoor guard program with plans on coming out with an indoor line next season as well. All of the brand new equipment is still in place and the money is still there as well. I am working with their administration to help and get the recrutiing thing off the ground. Joe and all of the folks there in Evansville are great people and will do well in the acticity. He is just going slow and making sure all things are covered. Again there is a building FULL of brand new equipment and money that is available to them. While the Exec. Dir. is gone there will still be thuings happening with the indoor program. Keep an eye out.

    Brad

    Please answer the Following question

    Yes or No.........

Hypnotix will be a competitive corps on the field this season

    Thank you.

  8. No one in Div. II, except the top 3, are guaranteed spots in finals so it had nothing to do with "not enough corps to eliminate" them. Half of the finals spots, 6 of them, are based SOLEY on score - with NO regards to division. There is no rule at all that more than 3 Div. III corps can't make finals and/or knock the bottom 1-3 Div. II corps out of their spots. Everyone, Div. II and III, is scored the same...no one was handed their spot in Grand Finals last year OR the year before. The only thing "guaranteed" (because of the number of Div. II corps) was Semi-Finals, which had nothing to do with comparing Div. II and III in the first place or making Grand Finals.

    /Rant over.

    *Sigh*....

Yeah, All I was pointing out was, there were 9 D2 Corps this year so everyone made finals. So this year, you should have 3 additional corps in D2, Arizona, BDB and SCVC, Take away Blue Stars, means 8 corps from last year plus 3 additions equal 11 spots and the D2 final is 9 corps. Now if any corps move up from D3 to D2 that will make more D2's fighting for the same 9 spots.

Now getting to the Grand Finals corps. The top 12 highest scores (D2 & D3) advanced to the Grand Finals from the Divisional Finals.

The thing I always enjoy every year is seeing some D3 Corps which are sometimes half the size or more smaller than some of the D2 corps, go out on the last day and actually defeat some of the D2's. For example, last year the D3 winner scored higher than two D2 corps and was less than a point away from another D2 corps. You are right, they are all judged on the same sheet and that is the way is should be.

All I am saying is, I like the D2's and D3's. The passion from these kids and thier corps is like nothing else.

  9. Yeah, the div 2 predicting thread went all wrong b/c people from certain div 2 corps can't get over themselves and the results of the season. People haven't learned the real values of drum corps yet.

I'll agree with all the bias predictions, A lot of people had the Surf (me included) or Spartans winning last year but when Finals came around Suf was not even close and Spartans won the Division but not the Grand. Chearing for you corps on the boards is great, but over predicting is nonsense sometimes.

D2 should be a real event this year. With the amount of D2 corps coming to Madison, some long time corps that always make it because there was not enough corps to be elimated from finals, will be knocked out this year.

  10. My 2 cents...........

Last Season, I saw the Raiders about 6 times, by the 2nd time I saw them I felt they had what was needed to win D3. Very few people gave them a chance.

If they stay in D3, then they have to be the hands on favorite to win again until someone beats them.

D3 and D2 are more fun to predict and watch than the open corps.

D3 should be fun this season, with some corps coming back, some new corps popping up, some corps getting bigger and stronger and some corps going going in a different direction.

  11. So, we've all seen this new thing called "arena football."

What's the possibility of "arena drum corps" in this world?

Kind of a random idea, but I was flippin through channels today and I ran across an arena football game and I just wondered what everyone thought of a ADCI? haha

Of course, I guess arena drum corps would be a little like indoor drum corps or something.

    So what do ya think?

While it's not the entire reason why Bill Cook Pulled Star out of DCI many years ago, it was said that Bill Cook had an idea about selling drum corps a little easier to people by bringing it indoors and having an arena type circuit. Back in the 70's on the east coast the old MMA circuit had a winter indoor circuit for corps that would be considered the 2/3's of today. DCA actually had a few shows at Madison Square Garden on a smaller turf field.

  12. funny you should say that....in search of the Velvet Knights through the years tape, I called 800 Video Express....i was directed to call Larry McCormick who has his own company now (if i remember correctly, this was a while ago)....bottom line is all that stuff just sits there.  DCI didn't renew the contract with whoever had made all those tapes, so they cannot legally sell them, so whatever is left (if anything at this point), will be left on shelves collecting dust unless DCI does something with them....don't know all the legal mumbo jumbo around this, but i suppose DCI could buy them and re-sell them under the DCI name (which i would like to see)

Some of those shows were not even copyrighted. Some of the finals were owned by the station that broadcasted and produced them.
