  1. The OP may be just realizing this but I'm not. If you look at the ending last year with Cadets and the ending the Cadets ended up with this year and many others, the meatiest part of their horn book is played while on the FLY and I do MEAN FLY. Watch the tubular website's video Cadets 2008 finals and the music being played during that INSANE drill is also INSANE. What people are asking is if it can be done and the Cavies are so talented why can't they do it? A very very legit question IMO.

Lemme see, one approach garnered third place and the other approach garnered fifth place. So, I'm gonna go ahead and say competitive advantage.

  2. I hate to bring this up, since I feel that we've already come to the "beating the dead horse" aspect of this issue, but there are a few posts that I would like to address:

I came up the ranks with some values that I believe should be universal: Don't disrespect your corps, your uniform, or yourself, and don't suffer anyone else do so. When you are in uniform you are responsible for upholding the honor and dignity of your corps, including all of those who came before you and will come after you. It should be an awesome responsibility, not taken lightly, but at the same time, so easy to carry with a bit of self-control.

Now that's a great thought........except for the fact that it's coming from a member of '77 Bridgemen. And guess what, I'm not even referring to the DQ for the overage member. I'm referring to the fact that I was a member of a '77 corps who was asked to leave a school in North Platte, Nebraska due to the fact that some Bridgemen members were helping themselves to the local HS football team's practice jerseys while both our corps were sharing the same facilities. I don't think it's entirely unknown to the drum corps public that some members of your corps were a little "rough around the edges."

When I marched Blue Stars, just to use my years as an example, the leaders of the corps, both titled and untitled, passed the traditions of the corps and the behavior expected of a Blue Star down through word and deed. If you don't have that, it doesn't matter what comes down from on high; "true discipline comes from within," in this case, within the member body.

You're referring to the same Blue Stars, whose members in 1981, after missing finals for the second year in a row, went on a drunken binge and spent several hours re-arranging the lines on our practice field, so that we had to spend another hour re-lining the field? I'm sure that kind of behavior is not outlined in the "Philosophy" section of the Blue Stars' History. I don't think it's entirely unknown to the drum corps public that some members of your corps were known to drink to excess.

The point here is that if you are a former corps member, the likelihood that your corps at some point in their history has engaged in some questionable behavior is pretty high. I don't think that there are too many instances of a single corps conducting themselves with exemplary behavior throughout their history. Troopers or SCV perhaps. That leaves a LOT of other corps with skeletons in their own closet. That fact that there are former members of corps who are willing to denigrate another corps for their behavior, when their own Alma mater has a history of poor judgement on occasion is laughable to me.

I don't mind the former Bluecoats calling out their own corps........as I'm certainly not happy with the actions of corps that I was a member of. I'm of the opinion that these problems should be handled "in house," however.

I think Jesus said it best with his "he without sin may cast the first stone." I for one certainly did my share of stupid things in my early 20s....both in and out of uniform.

  3. I was just trying to share some positives, even if for the members' sake. I know that seeing your corps criticized so blatantly, and sometimes torn down so hatefully can be really, really disheartening, especially after having arrived home no earlier than 3 days ago from busting your butt for an entire summer.

Unless I totally missed something, there's no draft for drum corps members--they are there voluntarily. So their decision to march with a drum corps that is obviously a lightning rod for criticism and hate is THEIR CHOICE.

It would, obviously, also be THEIR CHOICE to not read threads that will typically be critical of the show that they performed.

It's only drum corps, after all--you know, marching band on steroids.

  4. They started that in 1975 - I always loved it. We (Wausau Story) started doing our version of that in 1976 - basically a sustained roll with accents for 12 bars then play a 4 bar ride pattern. I have to tell you, when you march a two mile parade playing that, it really builds the chops! And. when you march two parades almost every weekend...... Ah, the old days!

    This?

  5. Yet another Sycophan deeply in need of medication. No need to attack the work of another corps with angry vitriol because the stars aren't aligning for you at the moment. Just breath deep and think about adding yet another killing to the show, I think they haven't killed the guy that drives the gator yet! By the way, PR has a extraordinary show and doesn't need your help!

Yep.....there's still time to add in the leg wedge!!!!

  6. I borrowed the title of their 91 show

"Cavalier Anthems" for the title of the painting.

There are several references to their history and traditions throughout the

painting. See if you can spot them....
