  1. Too bad it's a Helluva commute from PA. My wife and I really enjoyed the Jersey Boys show but looking forward to seeing the corps again with this new book. As a brass player (but not trained in muisic) interested to see how your style of practices plays on the stage.

Or plays out on a stadium field, from what I'm hearing may be the venue. This is a totally different direction for SW and is some of the most challenging music that I've ever played. Check out the demo for a small sample of this. And under the fantastic tutelage of Dr. P., I for one (and all of us in SW me thinks) will be a much better player while having a blast doing so. Looking forward to Annapolis in September.

  2. And here is my Whaley, Royce & Co. shoulder euph, from the late 60s.

    W-Rshouldereuph.jpg

    IronLips also owns one.

That looks like the Whaley-Royce "contra". I've got a photo of this horn with a member of the Toronto Optimists carrying one of these from Drim Corps Digest back in the mid-60's (post when I get back from Texas). The Brigade used the chest carrying W-R Euphs ( used by the 4 Brigade "basses", Jim Eastberg 1st Bari & me) in 1964. The W-R Euphs went to the DP Vanguard the following year and were used until they switched to Smith's in 1967.

  3. Oh, this is a weird day... another birthday blessing... at least this one came with a beer! Thanx Andy!! Wanna dance?

And now, two of our Whoers are in heat!

Briefly: It's a good thing that you know how to spell correctly!! Merry Christmas, Hapy Hanukkah, Etc. to all of you out there in "Whoville"!!! SineWave rehearsal this Saturday. Back to doin' the "Texas 2-Step".

  4. After we performed (Defenders) I saw the shows that followed. I knew what to expect at a Reunion Concert, and was looking forward to it.

I was happy to experience the "our-average-age-is-55" Reilly put on a trademark all-in stroll down memory lane. I cannot imagine any popcorn eater in Memorial Hall felt cheated by Reilly's show.

I admit these Irish eyes were leakin' a wee bit during the closer.

It was also "Reilly" great to hear Truman's "Ballyhoo" live once again. Had me playin' the contra part shortly thereafter!!!!

  6. I think last year they got them in April............

Most disturbing. I don't know what's worse. Poorer quality recordings/DVD's from the previous supplier or VERY late delivery from the one we have now. Anyone want to comment on which is worse?

  7. Rich,

Sorry I missed saying a personal "HI" to you in Plymouth Saturday!! (I did ask GK to say hi to you from me...thumbup.gif)

I'll have to post all of the links to the photos from the concert...

Thanks for posting these up. Plymouth was a real blast. Sorry I missed you as well. Now back to our regularly scheduled program.

  8. Don't look for a review in this post, because I haven't had the opportunity to participate in the Plymouth weekend for a number of years.

However, it's nice to know I am missed.

My phone rang in the wee small hours, with a post-party report. On the dishing-it-out end were two Polack contramen from the Cabs. And another old compadre, none other than the one and only John "Cupcakes" Curran.

We all sorely missed Mr. Cakes at the last DCAs, turns out he was in the hospital for a cuppla weeks getting his ticker tended to. It was sure good to hear his voice again. (But I'm glad he didn't try to play his soprano for me, it probably would have blown out the entire AT&T system.)

Was it that late (early)? Wasn't looking at the clock when Curran & I were locked up in an "inspirational" debate regarding mellophones & remembered your lamp, so Tommy called you up!!! Sorry if we woke you up.

  9. Fours days to go, and the forecast is still looking good -- partly to mostly sunny and a high temp of 58 degrees. Promises to be another great Plymouth weekend experience.

The tribute to Ralph Silverbrand will come at the end of our performance. We have confirmed that at least one of Ralph's daughters will attend, with the possibility of another as well. Ralph also had many friends from the Princemen and Reilly Raiders, many of whom are due to be there. I hope they get to witness the memorial tribute. It will be a special moment to end the evening.

"Captain": You gonna jump into the parade formation one block before the reviewing stand??? Just askin'. See you there!!!!!!

  10. When the gentleman in this photo (number 452) showed up on the doorsteps of the midwest corps and offered his talents in the early 1950's, the one caption that the corps there were lacking in to jump up to the forefront was drumming. He was a renowned past national champion snare drummer who had marched with the Stratford, Conn. Yankees back East.......

I believe this guy has something in common with our buddy Ed Violett?????? :satisfied:
