  1. That middle voice sound is incredible. Can anybody tell me the breakdown of the horns? All mellos or are there some Frenchies in there, too?

Got home @3:00AM ESDT. All mellos; 20+/-. Only counted contras this time - 9, with a total somewhere around 65 +/-. Curt Hawkins & George Headley screaming at ya in "LaMancha" and Mello Bobby Bonn in "Rio"!!

  2. So I've found the basic Mini Corps rules, but I haven't been able to see the judging sheets. Anyone have a link to them?

Paper napkins?? What's the link to the MC Rules? I'm sure there are a number of folks that would like to see them, I for one.

  3. The exhibition after SU was VERY entertaining by the folks from Empire. So much so that they did a repeat at the request of those in the audience. One disturbing part of that exhibition though was the use of an electric bass. For me I hope that I don't see that again any time soon. Hope that this isn't someone's idea of getting this introduced into future DCA formats???? A litmus test here??

  4. star was amazing....

I'll just say this once... for the uneducated... each of the three judges felt that star deserved to be more ahead of the score they had given the second place corps... if they could have given more than 100 - they would have...

I congratulate them on an amazing performance

half way through 1812 the audience was on their feet and wouldn't stop clapping... near the end ... they were throwing babies...

Yup!! I missed the babies part tho. Didn't see any.

  5. One popular scientific theory holds that the universe continues expanding, a result of the incredible force generated by the Big Bang. There seems to be a good deal of evidence for this view. Whether this will go on forever is debatable, and even Einstein struggled with this problem. After all, why wouldn’t the collective mass [...]

Very interesting article. So.......I don't believe that the contraction of the Corps "Big Bangs" as mentioned in the article will happen, but perhaps the implementation of the refinements as mentioned in this article? I know from playing contra all of these years that some very good "licks" have been covered up by our drill placements AND those other masking sounds generated during a performance. And it's not because we're not playing loud, either. It's all about balance, IMHO.

  6. You gotta admit no matter what side of this post your on that Hawthorne looks great coming onto the field with all their flags flying!

Holding on to tradition. The Corps was formed in 1946 by WWII veterans returning home. I don't think that they're going to give up this tradition any time soon. Just ask George Hayek!!!

  7. Thanks for the website, wife and I totally enjoyed your show last year. Glad SW is still around.

PS - double check the address, I couldn't find it...

Jim, the SineWave website, Sinewavebrass.com hasn't been set up yet; that's still in the works hence you couldn't open it up, but that will be the location when it's up & running. We do have a Facebook page:

We look forward to being back on stage in 2012 and several of us will be there in Rochester on Friday night. Glad you guys liked the 2010 performance - Thanks!!!

  8. Anyone know the status of Rt 15/Future I-99 corrdior construction between Mansfield PA and 86?

I was on I-99 this past weekend, driving it from I-80 to where it ends South of Altoona, PA and that section is all completed; 2 lanes divided highway - looks like a great speed trap to me. North of there??? Any help?

  9. What I don't see is where adding a few guitar riffs or an amplified pit will make that much of a difference. I get the impression that the people that support electronics envision a swarm of patrons rocking a hosts ticket booths back and forth, desperately trying to get a ticket to see a show if DCA allows corps to amplify.. I know that is not really the case, but sometimes that is how it comes across.

Adding this layer of electronics to a program still won't fix the core issue that is driving away attendance and support. Yes, it will add a fresh idea, but some corps need to totally overhaul their programs and rethink their show concepts if you really want to start drawing a crowd back.

Very well said. As for me, DCA, please don't do any of this. Please keep it percussion & brass only.

  10. Sine Wave..... NOT being there personally makes me sad. Those guys had a ton of stuff going for them the first year out in 2010. The show was well thought out and well written. The performance by the members was very good and IN TUNE. Hope to see them back at it soon ..... bring it back please !!

The 2010 SW show was a lot of fun to do, especially being on automatic pilot for most of it. We WILL be back in 2012, and better than ever; almost a 2 year plan for us to make it happen in 2012. A few of the present SW members will be in Rochester watching on Friday night, including this one. And thanks for the kind words - greatly appreciated!

  11. Heavy,

I'm not entirely positive of your question, but I guess I can assume you are talking about honor guard entrances. We have a plan in place to rectify this concern for those corps that present colors prior to a show. Part of our production this year will include announcements, show introductions and honor guards for all groups with them. Those groups that don't have honor guards we will include show opens and introductions.

Things we have on tap for this year:

    Tim

Please make this happen. Half of the enjoyment of watching the recordings, at least for me as an example, is to see the Caballeros Alumni taking the field to that infectuous street beat our drum line plays, and to hear the audience reaction to both the "Bull Call" and the "Chorale" the horn line plays. It's stuff like this that make these recordings REALLY memorable. Thanks for concidering.

  12. Royal Airs was fun that year, but to me, the best Royal Airs alumni performance was Madison in 02....when Brandt said "on the starting line" the crowd went nuts, and when they fired the starters pistol, the place became unglued.

Don't let it be said kids today don't respect the past. that place was packed with kids cheering them on

That was one awesome night in Madison!!!! How about that company front to the tune of "Bally Hoo"!!!

2005 was just as awesome as well! A long night for sure.

  13. "Rochester is a little over a week away and haven't heard much about the Mini Corps show...Mass Brass will be there with a totally new book arranged by Key Poulin, still playing plenty of Latin Jazz,(Spanish Fantasy, Mask of Zorro and La Fiesta) but with a different texture and sound. Another change will be a mini 3 piece pit to enhance Keys' music. The arrangements are very current which in turn made us old guys change our style of playing, not easy after playing one way for 40 some odd years! All I can say is thank God for Bud Lite! Looking forward to the big weekend and I hope we can pull it off, because our main goal is still entertainment."

Unfortunately SineWave will not be there this year, due to attrition in the horn line, but plans are in the works to be back in 2012.
