  1. I love the idea of all those Great Alumni Corps doing this show. Many of these when competitive , were frequents to the area, and a show like this just might re-ignite the interest in the marching entertainment business. I appreciate the sugestions, and will make an effort to bring this suggestion to the lions club and perhaps other orginaizations of their type, to try and continue this tradition in the North East!

  2. Thats a great idea in theory, but as I'm sure you are aware there isn't so much as a hint of competetive corps left in the area. Not even within a hundred mile radious. On the other hand, they might have success with a Local Band Compitition. That would keep costs down, but I'm not sure how much of a draw it would be

  3. The big difference that I see now is that the talent levels are superior to when we marched Keith. Thats not to say that our corps, didn't have talent, just that the kids today in todays corps, could easliy slide into any spot that we had back then IMO.

I recently found out that Fleetwood recording were putting out those old classic recordings that we all loved so much. I had lost all of the drum corp records that I had bought through-out my years with Drum Corps, so I decided to re-order one of my favorite Shows, 1969 World Open,, and while it brought beck some great memories, I was taken back by the lack of musicianship and quality, (Though, back then it was the finest in the land).

Better training in all phases, and not just with the corps member, but the staffs are more innovative and educated, not just a great gathering of well meaning volunteers and alumni.

  4. Brian, I'm sure you've noticed that, in his profile, he lists a couple of corps he likes. He also scrupulously avoids any mention of ever having actually been in a corps. We know he can execute a left face while rolling a rifle around his shoulders. Or, that could just be computer graphics

    Realyoldfrt,

I never understood why people with the most to say, have the most to hide =) If he really has a LOT of experience in D&B, why wouldn't he want everyone to know? It would give so much more weight to his,,,arguments?

  5. 1) Who wants to march who ISN'T in a marching band first? I bet there's an average of 1 per corps.

    2) OC must be doing REALLY well since they're all marching full corps!

Tell me, do you actually ever have anything constructive to say, or do you just enjoy taking Jabs at people, because I honestly don't see your point. Your opinion realy doesn't carry any weight with me, because

A: You show no respect and

B: you make very little sense to whats being talked about. You just keep trying to drive some tired point home. I Get it, ok! You DON'T LIKE DRUM CORP from my days and we should all just dry up and blow away, so please go to the current DCI discusions and impress them with your knowledge. I could care less.

  6. But my point is you could just JOIN a drum corps back then (for the most part) but you can't just JOIN a band of today, right? it doesn't matter how many of them there are, you still need to be in that school or district.

I'll admit, not every school will be cutting their band programs, but given the economy, their will be more and more still that may consider it. Still even at 4000, they are an exclusive club that you can only be in if you belong there.

So the kids that could march and want to march have to take their chances with what drum corps are left and openings are rare, even at OC

  7. Yeah,,,we did the "Up and arms" thing. LOL, but the final result was the same.

When I was in, back in the early 60's and 70s i did travel, up to 60 miles one way, but that was because my town had lost most of their competitive corps and I still had marching to do. Still, there were many corps in the area and all of them would make room. Bands don't have that flexability do they? If you don't belong to their districts, your just as much out of luck, right?

I have mentioned DCA to him at this point where we are located there are no competitive JR. WC or OC.

I realize there are MANY bands, but unless you attend those schools, they are just as exclusive as WC I would say.

    Thanks Mike

  8. "Nope...never thought that music ed stopped at the bandroom door. I played horn in 72 partially because I wanted to learn to play a brass instrument, and Don Angelica was a great teacher. Yes, many kids had no band connection back in the day...those days are long gone. The rise of the competitive MB world (due in large part to drum corps people) has provided a much larger base of kids having the same competitive experience I had in my local corps days, only there are thousands of them today, and they play a LOT better than most of the little corps.

Corps have to attract members who know about them...that is the scholastic music world. Kids in both band and corps receive those life skills you talk about."

Mike tell me how do kids join these bands if they want to play but the schools that they go to do not offer the competitive band experience, or in my son's case no band at all now that the schools have deemed fit to cut the program?

  9. Some of the biggest gamers I know I met through drum corps.

    Out. Of. Touch.

Actually Kieth is fine and in touch. You seem to be the one out of place here. Instead of hanging out with us old guys which you seem to despise and have little regard for, why don't you find some others of your own kind and peddel your distain of past era folks with whoever cares

  10. Right,

As my father use to say "Don't come into my yard and tell me I'm mowing it wrong"

I respect each Era, and Recognize that everyone is different

One Fact that can not be talked down: The corps of today will always be inferior to the corps of tomorrow ! And what goes around comes around, for anyone who feels the need to act superior to others

  11. What I find interesting in these discussion is when people of different eras and corps type (Jr/Sr/top/'non-so top") weigh in. BUT.... everyone has to remember that their experiences do not usually fit for all eras and all type of corps. I started in the mid 70s and saw the tail end of the local (Sr) corps era. That includes being in the lesser Sr corps circuit (RCA) championships one year (10 corps show) and having that circuit disappear 2 years later due to lack of corps.

Was my era like the 60s and older... no... was it like the 80s and newer... no... It was what it was for the time and things changed before and after for many reasons. And so did the rest of the world.

Right on the Money ! You can not say to one Era, "Your corps were terrible" YOU JUST CAN'T!! My corps were GREAT,,in my Era, there was nobody better then the corps that were on top,,,IN my Era for that time.

To Make Blind and Ignorant statements to someone from another Era about THAT Era, is simply childish, and shows arrogance and ignorance.

Trust me My Brother never told my father that His Army sucked, just because my brothers army had all the new advances. Could the NEW army beat lets say the army from world war two? Probably, because of advances and schooling, BUT, that doesn't mean that it's a better army all the way around. Just better equiped and educated.

My Point on this discussion is we have vastly seperated Era's arguing over who's better (Stupid) The Era of today is Great,,AND the ERA of Yesterday was GREAT,, there can be no logical argument here.

  12. Your last statement....

Those are the ones that DO exist! Sadly corps have left us and I guess we have to accept that fact. We can only reminisce. The casualty list is there beause corps couldn't evolve, plain and simple. Drum corps changed and what was will never be. We need to be supportive of the young people that make up the corps that we do have out there.

If I were a young person and heard the complaining going on I would hate "your BITD!" I wouldn't give two kraps about what you all did back in the day. If I listened to recordings or videos of "The golden era" I would tell you how god awful it was...out of tune brass playing, drum lines that play only rudiments and marching that was uncreative.

    Support what we have left!

But Kieth,,this is the Historical forum, isn't it? I mean you have to go into this forum with your eyes open and expect a little BITD, without getting your feelings hurt right?

I do support the corps of today, very much, and I do think they are superior to what we had as far as talent. What I do not support is the arrogance and acid tones I hear when they talk about our times. Not from all of them of course, just a few that feel that they owe nothing to anyone.

I have a great deal of respect for the kids today in corps and what they must do to accomplish the shows that they put out, but, my respect gets tainted when I feel spit on, by the very people that I am supporting.

Your point is well taken and I respect it,,but, if they are coming to this forum, they are bound to hear old farts tell how things were better BITD

  13. I want to kick all corps out... and replace them with new corps made up entirely of 7 legged robots.

(btw - read my posts very carefully.... you are wrong. I suggested trimming WC down to about 18 corps and that a few current OC corps... probably about 3-4 at the absoute bottom.... might find a better outlet outside of DCI. And... if they stepped up, and competition was really a part of their mission, then it might make sense for them later to come back. But... what is the point of competing, when you are not even close to being competitive?)

Without a doubt the dumbest thing I have heard in my 45 years in drum and bugle activity.

There was a mad man back in the 30's and 40's whos thought pattern, though on a grander scale, wasn't far from this one. Its our diversity and what use to be the Un-known of compitition, that was the foundation of the activity itself. The chance that the little guy DID have a chance to knock off one of the big guys. This is Elitist thinking and would only benifit the current WC corps, NOT promote the welfare of all corps and the activity itself.

If corps of the past did such a poor job (In your opinion) then tell me,,why is it that just about every major band program in the country, adopted the drum & bugle corps style??

  14. I was suggesting that it was not as big of a loss as the original poster had implied. For every one of those local corps that folded, a scholastic program stepped up to take its place.

Going back ages ago... to when I was a kid, when I was in marching band in high school, we could see the stadium lights of 2 other schools form our field. Since I was in school, there are 4 more new schools in the city... all with great marching band programs.

Since the 70's the number of new and solid school marching band programs that have appeared are several times that of the number of corps that have folded since then.

And what happens when school budgets dictate that these great programs be shut down or reined in, as mine just did. To be happy for the disappearance of what was makes no logic sense.

Ages ago? =) I was married and out for several years by the time that you are talking about.
