  1. If I recall correctly, you would see a lot of Kilties jackets after a show being worn by MBBB.

That's because the corps founder and director (George Lindstrom) was the former Kilties' director.

Most of the staff were former Kilties with several Scouts (John Schrack, Ken Geise, Greg Jaroze for a few) thrown in.

If you change the hats, the colors and a few details, MBBB was very Scout-like. Including marching style and being crowd-oriented. (If my memory is working, there were as many as 8, maybe more, Blues members who later marched Scouts. Not bad for a corps from the South that only completed 3 seasons.)

  2. the 86 sky ryders rewrote the entire drill between tours. (thanks nolan  )

Thanks Kevin! I'm still trying to catch up on lost sleep from '86

Actually the rewrite was mainly because of the change needed in the opener (building the front). Since the new version completely rearranged horn positions, we decided to fix everything that we could. (We actually kept a lot of the first tour drill but everyone was now in new spots so to the marchers, it was new.)

Would I do things differently that year? Of course, but I wouldn't trade it for anything! ^OO^

  3. Definitely 1980 (note the blue sash with gold stripe). The soprano closest is Johnny Sanchez, former drill writer for Blue Devils and Phantom Regiment (probably others as well). After 1980 Memphis, Johnny went on to march Cadets before aging out.

The next sop. player back is Garvin Keen, former band director in north Mississippi, near Memphis.

The third sop. (can see just his face) is Robin Crawford. Another former band director, lives in Pearl, MS now and has recently returned from Iraq and is a Warrant Officer in full-time Army National Guard.

    (Edited to add info.)

  4. A lot of you are pretty surprised by this announcement. The brief talk I had with Sal at Mansfield Stadium makes more sense now.

Corps fans will speculate on the reasons and politics of this decision. Everyone will have an opinion of who will or should replace Sal. When it's all said-and-done there will be a new director of the Madison Scouts and they will still be the Madison Scouts.

The Scouts are not defined by their director, but by the members, past and present. Sal has done a great job in the last four seasons and now the torch passes to the next director (who by the way, will not be the last director).

Just as in every year before this one, I look forward to seeing the next class of Scouts and the product they put on the field. Everyone knows that they will put everything into it, leaving it all on the field every show.

    The speculations may now continue....

  5. In front of Tommy and dead center in the photo is our drill designer, Nolan Jones - another all around great guy and excellent instructor. The corps made a mistake in not bringing him back in 87 in my opinion.

Thanks Tim for the compliment! There were a lot of good talent on the staff that summer. It was tough trying to give Tommy a "palette" of drill for his view of delivering the story line, but it worked. SR's highest place ever!

The photo is definitely from some sort of free day. Notice the white around my fresh haircut. :)

    (Edited for spelling. :) )

  6. On the way to Finals in 86

86 Sky Ryders - Keith Hall, visual caption head, and Nolan Jones, drill designer

Just a month ago Keith Hall, Mack Deas (brass, later worked with Cadets and magic) and I had dinner while attending the funeral of our college band director.

This is the Keith Hall of "The Band Hall" in Nashville. Mack now lives in Portland, Maine as the Manager for the statewide office of New York Life.

  7. OK... I have that song going through my head now... "It's a small world AFTER ALL ... " (sorry, cuz now I'm sure you all do, too!)

But Sandy (Malibu) recognized and now works with someone in this photo... and I'm quite certain that is Nolan Jones who marched Madison and is

now in the Madison Alumni project. And I marched with Nolan... (and I am again NOW...) B)

What's that deal about the "six degrees of separation?" I'm sure all of us in this drum corps community are only about THREE people away from knowing

    everyone else ... b**bs

Yes, I'm the same one. :) 1986 was a fun (and trying) summer. I was brought in as a drill tech and a week or so before everydays, I became the drill writer! Talk about deadlines! Write all night then sleep while the corps learned it. That worked pretty well until a move needed tweaking then in would come Keith and there would go the sleep. Oh, ... the life of drum corps. Wouldn't trade it for anything. ... well, maybe a lot of cash. :)

Great group to teach, too. Even Oscar.

  8. Our Corps Director/Lead Soprano Nolan Jones sent me a one-word text message from the first rehearsal:

    "WOW!"

After talking with him on the phone, I am convinced that this is one of the biggest "must see" items for DCI this season.

    Yeah, man . . .

WOW! Greg Jarosz (Scouts '79, '80 and Memphis Sop tech '81) cracked a half-dozen cinder blocks with a DD! :wall: I can hit a pretty good one but not one that can cover the blast of an F-18 with afterburners!

It was (and will be) worth every mile!

  9. Vic Kulinski told me that Nolan Jones of the Jackson Generals called him last night but did not leave a message.  Safe to say no news is good news in that case.  We just want to know how the rest of the Generals corps members are.

The connection cut out before I could lkeave a message with him. Vic had generously offered for me to tag along with HW for Scranton. I was just trying to let him know I'll be sticking around here.

We had a Jackson Generals performance schedlued for September 10 with the Mississippi Symphony. That is up in the air for now.

Good luck to all in PA this week!

  10. The Jackson area is slowly coming back up. I shut down the web servers here to prevent any file corruption. Good thing too, just got power this morning.

Power is still off at my home in Brandon. If it isn't back up soon, we'll be throwing out a lot of food. (Actually taking it to shelter sites for them to use) Fortunately my neighborhood had a lot less damage than most of the community. I do need a new roof though. Anyone know how to raise 2 baby squirrels? Found them on the ground yesterday. Their eyes aren't opened yet and seem to be in surprisingly good shape.

My five year old and two year old boys are getting pretty tired of the hot house and candles.

Not many casualties in this area. I haven't been able to get in touch with our guys in Hattiesburg to Gulfport yet. I hoping they were able to clear out in time.

I remember Camille passing over Jackson in '69. It was a Cat1 by then, like Katrina. Katrina was a lot bigger in size.

Thanks to everyone for your concern. As we get a better info I'll let you all know.
