That's because the corps founder and director (George Lindstrom) was the former Kilties' director. Most of the staff were former Kilties with several Scouts (John Schrack, Ken Geise, Greg Jaroze for a few) thrown in. If you change the hats, the colors and a few details, MBBB was very Scout-like. Including marching style and being crowd-oriented. (If my memory is working, there were as many as 8, maybe more, Blues members who later marched Scouts. Not bad for a corps from the South that only completed 3 seasons.)

Thanks Kevin! I'm still trying to catch up on lost sleep from '86 Actually the rewrite was mainly because of the change needed in the opener (building the front). Since the new version completely rearranged horn positions, we decided to fix everything that we could. (We actually kept a lot of the first tour drill but everyone was now in new spots so to the marchers, it was new.) Would I do things differently that year? Of course, but I wouldn't trade it for anything! ^OO^

Of course! "Buddy" Edge just recently retired from New Albany, MS schools. He actually wanted to keep on but retired in protest over school district issues. Buddy started volunteering with MB3 in 1981.

Memphis Blues, 1980 at the first public perfromance at the spring Open House / Show & Tell. This is in the old condemed YMCA in downtown Memphis in April(?) of 1980. I'm the soprano on the far left. :)

Definitely 1980 (note the blue sash with gold stripe). The soprano closest is Johnny Sanchez, former drill writer for Blue Devils and Phantom Regiment (probably others as well). After 1980 Memphis, Johnny went on to march Cadets before aging out. The next sop. player back is Garvin Keen, former band director in north Mississippi, near Memphis. The third sop. (can see just his face) is Robin Crawford. Another former band director, lives in Pearl, MS now and has recently returned from Iraq and is a Warrant Officer in full-time Army National Guard. A lot of you are pretty surprised by this announcement. The brief talk I had with Sal at Mansfield Stadium makes more sense now. Corps fans will speculate on the reasons and politics of this decision. Everyone will have an opinion of who will or should replace Sal. When it's all said-and-done there will be a new director of the Madison Scouts and they will still be the Madison Scouts. The Scouts are not defined by their director, but by the members, past and present. Sal has done a great job in the last four seasons and now the torch passes to the next director (who by the way, will not be the last director). Just as in every year before this one, I look forward to seeing the next class of Scouts and the product they put on the field. Everyone knows that they will put everything into it, leaving it all on the field every show. MYNWA The speculations may now continue....

Thanks Tim for the compliment! There were a lot of good talent on the staff that summer. It was tough trying to give Tommy a "palette" of drill for his view of delivering the story line, but it worked. SR's highest place ever! The photo is definitely from some sort of free day. Notice the white around my fresh haircut. :) (Edited for spelling. :) )

Just a month ago Keith Hall, Mack Deas (brass, later worked with Cadets and magic) and I had dinner while attending the funeral of our college band director. This is the Keith Hall of "The Band Hall" in Nashville. Mack now lives in Portland, Maine as the Manager for the statewide office of New York Life.

Yes, I'm the same one. :) 1986 was a fun (and trying) summer. I was brought in as a drill tech and a week or so before everydays, I became the drill writer! Talk about deadlines! Write all night then sleep while the corps learned it. That worked pretty well until a move needed tweaking then in would come Keith and there would go the sleep. Oh, ... the life of drum corps. Wouldn't trade it for anything. ... well, maybe a lot of cash. :) Great group to teach, too. Even Oscar.
